CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT: SURRENDER !
7x03
━━━━━━
TO SAY THAT CASEY WILLOWS WASN'T HAVING THE GREATEST DAY WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. Now, she was being held as a hostage by a delusional man who thought the government had a hold of his family and was now about the blow up the BAU with himself inside.
Let's backtrack a bit:
The BAU team had investigated a mass murder located in Charlottesville. Five people shot, three stabbed. By the severity of the killings, the company's CEO, Adam Werner, was the supposed intended target. The different styles of the killings had supposed that there had been one unsub. Mark and Mary Dolan were the next found victims, shot to death in their own home. The BAU had figured out the unsub was the Dolans' son, Luke. He and Adam Werner were Navy SEALs in the same unit where Werner was the leader and Luke was the second of command. Luke Dolan had been on some sort of mission or some delusional break from reality. They had figured out that it had been the cause of a car accident and he hit his head — causing the break to happen. Now, they had to keep his estranged wife and daughter in protection — since they may be his next targets. A mission called Dorado Falls had also played a part in Dolan's own mission.
Of course, Casey had decided to get coffee in an actual coffee shop today instead of the BAU on the wrong day. When she arrived back, she felt a gun pressed up against her back and was told to give her keycard. She did so and did whatever the man said. She tried to run away for help only once and that had been enough.
They had travelled through the darkness when they had arrived into the familiar rooms of the BAU. He had a cell phone and had called Rossi — who Casey knew he was talking to beforehand. "Hello?" She heard Rossi's familiar voice.
"Is this Sergeant Major Rossi?" Luke asked. "Yes," Rossi answered. "I was hoping you'd call, Luke. Where are you?" Casey and Luke arrived at the familiar steps. "Right behind you." Luke announced in front of the team.
Everyone held their guns up and Casey held her arms up in surrender. "Don't shoot, he has a bomb!" Casey shouted. "Okay, okay." Rossi spoke softly as he had seen a gun was pointed towards Casey head. She was in more danger than anybody right now.
JJ and Reid watched in helplessness. Not knowing what to do to help the girl. Reid watched in defeat and he was silently praying and hoping that Casey wouldn't get hurt from the man behind her. He prayed that gun wouldn't go off at any second.
Rossi and Morgan watched the girl the same way JJ and Reid were. Rossi knew he would try his best to get Casey out of this situation and Casey was begging him to with his eyes. Morgan held his gun up and hoped that if he had an aim, he'd shoot Luke Dolan point blank in the head.
Hotch and Garcia were watching through cameras in another. Garcia was in shock and fear to see the girl in the position that she was in. Hotch's heart began to pound in his chest with stress as he had seen the girl walk down the steps with the man holding a gun behind her.
All prayed that Casey would get out of this situation alive.
"Alright, Luke, you don't want to be aiming that around." Rossi told. "Snipers have the building covered." Morgan held his gun up steadily and Casey prayed he wouldn't take a shot. "You're in the crosshairs right now, I can guarantee that." He said.
"Windows are bulletproof. High-density Lexan, right?" Luke asked. "Rossi, get me out of this." Casey pleaded. "I'm the one you want. You can let my team go." Rossi treks as both Luke and Casey walked down those steps. "I'll trade you. Give me my wife and daughter. You have three minutes to decide."
"No one is seeking revenge here. You've created this conspiracy in your own mind." Rossi said. "You took my family." Luke gritted his teeth. "To protect them from you after you murdered your own parents." Rossi tried to help him understand but he wasn't understanding. "They were imposters. You have my real parents."
"Your real parents are dead." Reid spoke, all eyes on him now.
"Spence--" JJ said.
"Reid, I swear to God, you get me killed, I'm haunting you." Casey threatens as she stares at him carefully but it seems that in his eyes, Reid knows what he's doing. He always does, Casey never doubted that.
"You want to know what's really going on?" Reid asked. "You were in a car accident three nights ago and you suffered a head trauma." Reid spoke carefully, in hopes that he, the team and more specifically Casey, would get out of this alive.
"If I don't see Jenna and Ally now... we're all gonna die." Luke threatened everyone and suddenly, on the PA: his wife's voice pitched up. "Luke? Can you hear me?" Luke blinked, hoping he was really hearing what he was hearing. "I need you to stop what you're doing." Jenna tries. "We're fine. Me and Ally are safe. Luke, you have to let those people go."
"The terms haven't changed." Luke says and Morgan looks at the man and asked. "You don't believe that's her?" Luke looked at Morgan. "I've been through this before." Casey looks down. "What's it gonna take for you to believe it?" She questioned. "You have one minute." Luke told, pressing the gun into Casey's back harder. Casey was sure it was going to leave a mark.
"Daddy?" His daughter, Ally's voice appeared on tbe PA. "Why are you doing this? Mommy says you don't feel good. Maybe you need to lie down. I'm scared, Daddy. I just want to go home." Tears were embedding in Luke's eyes as his daughter spoke.
There's a pause before Jenna speaks again on the intercom. "Do you remember our honeymoon, when you woke me up at night and you took me up that mountain that you'd hiked years before?" It was obvious they had something before but everything got in the way. "We watched the sun rise. It was magical. And you said that as much as you loved this spot, you loved me even more."
"Do you believe it's her now?" Rossi asked Luke and everyone could tell on his face that even he was scared. "Your eyes and your mind are playing a trick on you. When you see your family, you think that they're imposters, but it's all caused by an illness." Reid explained to Luke.
"You're sick, Luke. It's not your fault."
"I love you, daddy."
"We both do."
"Come on, now, Luke," Morgan tries. "You don't need that gun. None of us want to hurt you. You are a hero to this country. Please let us help you." Casey turns her head a bit. "We can get you the help you need. You just have to do as we ask."
"I want to see Jenna." Luke told. "Like Agent Willows said, you have to do as we ask." Rossi says. "Put your weapon down and close your eyes." Casey watched carefully as he placed his weapon down and let Casey go and Casey nearly rushed towards JJ and Reid.
Casey nearly grabbed Reid's hand but it slipped away as soon as it fit. The other hadn't even realized what occurred in the small moment. All that mattered was that Casey was okay and alive. And that was all that mattered to Reid in that moment. Not some germs that he could try and continuously wash off. But if it were Casey, he'd be crazy to admit it but he'd never wash his hand after that.
"Luke, you have to close your eyes." Reid stood behind Rossi as he spoke. "Why?" Luke questioned. "Because you need to know that your wife is real and your eyes will trick you." Reid explained.
"Please, Luke," Jenna spoke again. "Close your eyes or we will never be together again." Rossi stepped closer as he took the remote for the bomb and urged Luke to close his eyes and he did.
"Okay, they're afraid you might hurt me, so they're gonna handcuff you. And then I'm going to come out, but you have to keep your eyes closed." The bomb squad came in and removed the remote from Rossi's hand and Morgan placed him in handcuffs. Casey felt an ounce safer with the bomb being gone and Luke being in handcuffs.
Jenna made her way to her ex-husband and hugged him as she begged: "I'm right here, baby. Promise me you'll keep your eyes closed." Luke broke out in sobs; "Is that you? Is that really you?" Jenna pulled away. "Everything's gonna be okay. But we have to go to the hospital now, okay?"
JJ stepped over to Jenna. "First Jenna's gonna cover up your eyes." JJ gave Jenna a scarf to wrap around Luke's face. "Daddy! Daddy, where are you going?" Ally was now being pulled away by Emily so she couldn't see the scene of her father being in handcuffs. Luke began to fight and struggled but Morgan had a hold on him and JJ had Jenna pulled away as well.
Casey didn't realize it but she had gripped onto Reid's arm in some sort of comfort. Maybe it was to realize that she was still here and still alive. Reid had realized it due to the death grip on his arm and he was sure she would leave a bruise on his wrist.
Casey turned away from the scene in shock and Rossi approached the girl and Casey had let go of Reid and pulled Rossi in a hug. "Are you okay?" Rossi asked. "Yes, I'm okay." Casey muttered into his shirt as she hugged him.
Reid wasn't going to admit it to himself but he was feeling a little sad that Casey had let go of him. Maybe he made her feel safe. But Reid knew it wasn't about that — it couldn't have been. He wasn't strong like Morgan or brave like Hotch and he sure as hell was no Marco — how could he keep her safe? Last time he tried to do that, it didn't end well and he ended up getting kidnapped with her. Reid didn't know what these feelings were and he didn't want to figure them out either. Maybe he'd wait it out.
