Chapter 6
-The next day-
"You're not leaving this goddamn couch 'til you tell us what the hell is going on." Jasper stated, standing in front of me. I continued eating my Lucky Charms, simply ignoring the larger woman. "Hey. HELLO. I am talking to you." Jasper hissed, crossing her arms. I rolled my eyes and tried looking past her at the TV. She reached back and pushed the power button, shutting the screen off. "I was watching 60 Minutes you asshole." I grumbled, dropping my spoon angrily back into my cereal bowl.
"Too bad. You nearly left us behind at the bank to get arrested tonight, Peridot. You would never do that on a normal occasion. Now spill it." she commanded, furrowing her eyebrows. I grew more anxious, and looked down at the floor quickly. Jasper stood there awaiting a response, to which of course I did not give. "There's something bothering you... we're just worried about you, man." Jasper said in a softer tone. I looked up at Jasper and glared. "And I insist, there is nothing wrong. I just don't wanna end up in jail." I stated, balling my fists.
Jasper tilted her head, and deepened her stare at me, and I grew more uncomfortable. My eyes darted to the side, and I racked my brain looking for a way out of this. "Please just leave me alone about this... I'm... a bit confused and conflicted right now." I huffed, running my fingers through my hair. "Just tell me about it. Maybe it'll make you feel better." Jasper explained. I groaned loudly, getting really sick and tired of this shit. "Fine. You wanna know so badly?" I asked through gritted teeth. "Very much so." Jasper replied.
"I'm friends with a cop." I deadpanned, avoiding eye contact with Jasper. Jasper shook her head and blinked a few times before looking back down at me. "What?" she asked. "I said. I am friends. With a cop." I said, looking down. "How the hell did that happen?" she suddenly asked in a high pitched voice. "I-I didn't know she was a cop at first! B-but as soon as I noticed her uniform and everything, I had already started a full on conversation with her." I explained.
"That's fucking stupid, are you blind?!" she asked, throwing her arms up. "N-no! I just..." I trailed off, not wanting to admit that Lapis's eyes solely distracted me from the rest of her for a while. "I don't know what to do, okay?! She gave me her number and we've been... hanging out." I muttered, tapping my fingers against the table. There was some silence for quite a bit, and I was half-expecting Jasper to start scolding me. "Dude. This is perfect!" she exclaimed, and my head shot up in surprise. "Wh-what?!"
"Yeah! You could get info for us! Get close with her, and see where they are most of the time. You could always ask what their methods are on catching the bad guys, ya know? See if they know about us! Get. Info!" Jasper explained eagerly. "Wh-what?! I-I can't do that! Plus, I don't think she's even allowed to reveal that kinda stuff!" I protested. "Nonsense. Not if you get close enough. Convince her to take you to the station for a little 'field trip' if ya know what I mean." Jasper grinned, putting her hands on her hips.
"No, Jasper! I-I can't do that!" I whined, covering my face with my hands. "Why the hell not?! Peridot this works to our advantage. Can't you see that?!" she said, balling her fists excitedly. "She's my friend. I can't just betray her like that." I replied. "C, mon, we're criminals, dude. We can't have friends besides our accomplices. We betray people all the time." she assured, waving me off. I furrowed my eyebrows and shot Jasper a dirty look. "It's just a simple friendship. I have no business in her work and she has no business in mine." I explained, closing my eyes.
"Hm. You've changed, Peridot. This lousy copper has changed you. You in love with her or somethin'? You gay, Peridot?" Jasper asked, crossing her arms once again. "I-I'm not in love with her!" I growled, feeling my face heat up violently. "I just don't think so emotionlessly like you do." I grumbled. "It's not emotionless. It's called usin' your smarts." Jasper shot back, pointing to her own head. I scoffed, and turned my head away from her. "You get your own dirty work done." I said.
"Fine. Could you at least tell me the gal's name?" she asked. "Nope. You're just gonna try and search for her." I responded flatly. She sighed, and pinched the bridge of her nose. "You told me to do my own dirty work. So I'm gonna do it. Tell me her name." Jasper told me. "No." I replied stubbornly. There was a deafening silence for a whole minute, and I side-glanced Jasper. She grunted, and walked into the kitchen. "You always gotta make things harder for everything..." she murmured, back facing me. I squinted my eyes, and mocked her inside my head.
I wanted to see Lapis again, but I knew that these guys were gonna make things much harder for me.
