Chapter Five
Aiden smiled as he opened the front door. Oliver stood there, black button up shirt rolled up at the selves and dark plants. His hair was pushed back but a few stray strands had fallen down over his forehead. Damn, Aiden thought. He had almost forgotten how hot Oliver was. Oliver looked more than happy as he stood at the door, a smile wide on his face.
"You're early," Aiden said with a grin.
"Only by a few minutes. Oh, and it's nice to see you too," Oliver replied. "You look adorable."
"Adorable?" Aiden asked. A laugh entered his words on their own accord. He looked down at his band shirt and tight jeans. His red vans were bright against the dark floorboards.
"Yes," Oliver lent over and kissed his cheek. "Very, adorable."
Aiden couldn't help but realise how different he and Oliver were, and yet how perfectly they fit together. Aiden couldn't dwell on the thoughts too much as Oliver had been standing in front of him for a while now, waiting to be let in. Aiden stepped back and led Oliver into the apartment. They sat down on the bench seats. Aiden's cup of tea was steaming on the bench where he had left it. He took a sip. "Do you want one?" he asked Oliver.
"I'm good," he replied. "Where's Chase?"
"He is at Mary's. They will meet us there."
"Ah, okay."
"How was work today?" Aiden asked. He hoped that Oliver would choose tonight to come clean about his job, but he wasn't holding his breath. He had thought more about what Mary had said, and decided that he wouldn't be mad at Oliver whenever he did tell the truth, as long as he had good intentions.
"It was alright," Oliver told him. "I missed you."
Aiden felt the blush hit his cheeks. "Are you excited to hang out with Chase and Mary tonight?" he asked.
Oliver nodded. "Yeah, it will be good to get to know your friends."
"Chase is basically family," Aiden explained. "You probably won't ever meet my family, so this is about as good as it gets. He and Brian are really my only friends." Aiden suddenly realised how weird that made him sound. He didn't want Oliver to think he was some strange guy who couldn't keep friends.
"Don't worry about that, believe me. I don't have many friends either."
Aiden felt better about what he had said. "What about family?" Aiden asked.
"I don't really want to talk about my family," Oliver said. He looked away from Aiden and suddenly the hallway became an interesting thing to look at.
Aiden felt the tension rise in the air for a few moments. He wondered if he should ask about that girl he saw calling Oliver. Her name was Ava and that was all he knew about her. For all Aiden knew, she could have been his sister or his friend. He stopped himself from asking because he didn't want Oliver to have to lie to him. Oliver seemed pretty keen to keep parts of his life a secret from Aiden.
"Okay," Aiden said. He was pretending that he didn't care, when in reality, all he wanted was to know more about Oliver. He wanted to hear about his past and his family and what it was that made him tick. Instead, he received vague answers. He liked what he knew about Oliver. Aiden knew that much. "You know you can tell me things, right?"
Oliver's gaze quickly shifted back to Aiden. His eyebrows furrowed. "I know. There's just parts of my life that I don't want to talk about. One day I'll share them with you, but not right now."
Aiden felt like they just had a break through. "That's okay with me. Take your time."
Oliver reached over and linked their hands. "You know I care about you, right?"
Aiden nodded. "Yeah, of course."
Oliver looked relieved. "I'm really glad you're my boyfriend."
Aiden couldn't help but smile. "So we are officially exclusive boyfriend and boyfriend?"
Oliver leant closer. "Boy, we were officially, exclusive boyfriends from the moment I asked you out."
Aiden laughed. "You asked me out? I remember that differently, I distinctly rambler it being-" Aiden was interrupted when Oliver kissed him. Aiden kissed back. He honestly felt like the gap between them had been bridged. No, he didn't know anything new about Oliver's past, but to know that Oliver cared about him and was going to tell him everything one day, well that was good enough for him. He pulled back and just admired Oliver for a few seconds before leaning into him and kissing Oliver again, except this time he wrapped his arm around his neck and drew their bodies closer.
Oliver pulled back after a few moments. "We should probably go soon, otherwise we will be late."
Aiden kissed him again. "I don't care," he whispered against his lips.
Sure enough, they were fifteen minutes late to the restaurant. Aiden reached out for Oliver's hand when they got out of his car. They almost ran to the front door of the little Chinese restaurant that Chase had picked. Aiden knew that his friend probably picked this place because it was something that Aiden could afford. Aiden remembered the amount of times Chase had taken girls to the expensive places in the city on dates. He hardly went to places like this. Aiden was grateful that he had been paid the day before, but most of that money would go to bills.
Aiden looked around the restaurant. The place was small, with tables spread out across the room which was decorated in red and yellow designs. He scanned the faces of the people at each table, his eyes searching for Chase and Mary.
"There they are," he told Oliver. He led Oliver over to the table, their connected hands between them.
Mary and Chase were faced away from the door. They smiled up at them when the pair reached the table. "We wondered where you two had ended up!" Chase said jokingly. He stood up and shook Oliver's hand. "Nice to see you again, buddy."
"You too," Oliver said. Oliver smiled over at Mary. "Nice to meet you," he said.
"I've heard a lot about you!" Mary told him. She smiled brightly over at Aiden. "We are very glad that Aiden is finally settling down! We didn't think that would happen!"
Aiden instantly regretted inviting Mary. Aiden kept an eye on Oliver to see if his expression changed, but he didn't notice anything. Oliver didn't seem to react to what Mary had said. Chase, on the other hand, sent her a warning look. Mary didn't notice at all, instead she just beamed at Oliver.
Aiden sat down opposite Chase and motioned for Oliver to join him. Oliver linked their hands under the table and a warm feeling spread up Aiden's arm. Aiden reached over and grabbed the glass of water in front of him.
Oliver chose the moment he took a sip to whisper in his ear. "So apparently you're the town hoe?"
Aiden laughed so quickly that his mouthful of water sprayed out of his mouth. He pulled his hand from Oliver's and gently slapped him across the chest with the back of his hand. "Shut up! I am not!" he laughed out. Mary and Chase shared a confused look. Aiden wiped the back of his hand over his mouth. "Sorry," he muttered.
"So, how long have you two been dating?" Oliver asked.
"Two months and three days," Mary replied. She smiled brightly over at Chase. "Haven't we sweetie?" Chase nodded.
Aiden wanted to roll his eyes. He held himself back only for Chase's sake.
The waiter came over and they ordered their food. Aiden hoped that the food would come quickly. He had half a mind that Mary might actually spill about the lobby incident. She was a bit unpredictable, and the fact that she brought up his apparent bachelor lifestyle had put him on edge.
"So how did you and Aiden meet?" Mary asked.
Oliver smiled over at Aiden. "It's a funny story really."
"It's not that funny," Aiden interjected.
"It all started when he stalked me around a mountain and took photos of me," Oliver told her.
Aiden gasped. "That is not what happened!"
Mary giggled. "I can't believe you did that Aiden!"
"Yeah Aiden," Chase laughed out, "you really need to stop stalking people!"
Aiden threw his head into his hands. "I hate you," he whispered out the side of his hands towards Oliver.
Oliver draped his arm around Aiden's hunched back. "Then," Oliver continued, "I accused him of taking my photo and he told me that he was getting back at me for accidently getting in the frame of his photo."
"Which you did do!" Aiden muttered from his hand cave.
"Whatever you say," Oliver replied. He laughed and reached over and kissed Aiden on the forehead. "Are you going to come out of hiding?"
"I will, as soon as you stop lying about me!" he replied.
Aiden heard Oliver's laugh as he felt Oliver's arm leave him. Aiden sat up and turned his gaze onto Oliver. "Now my friends are going to like you more than they like me!"
"He's not wrong," Chase chimed in.
They all laughed. Aiden was slightly embarrassed when he looked over at his laughing friends, but he felt like this night wouldn't be as bad as previously thought. Their food came and the four of them ate slowly, talking becoming more important than eating. They laughed and although the topics were light, Aiden felt like he saw a new side of Oliver. He felt like Oliver was really opening up. He seemed genuinely interested in Chase, especially. Aiden was more than happy that Chase and Oliver were getting along. Chase was like a brother to him and he wanted his boyfriend and friends to be on good terms. He always believed that if your friends didn't like your boyfriend then you were in deep trouble.
After a few hours they were all stuffed with food and ready to leave. When the bill came, Oliver ended up paying for he and Aiden's meal. Aiden promised him that he would take him for dessert after to repay him and Oliver was more than happy with that idea. As the left the restaurant, Chase told Mary to meet him at the car and pulled Aiden aside.
Aiden pulled his keys from his pocket and handed them to Oliver. "I'll meet you in the car."
"Okay," Oliver replied. He headed off in the direction of the car.
"What's up?" Aiden asked.
Chase stepped closer to Aiden. "I think this guy is good for you," he said.
Aiden beamed. "Really?"
Chase nodded. "He seems like a really good guy, but most of all, you are so happy when you are around him. I don't think I've ever seen you smile as much as you did tonight."
Aiden looked down as he pushed his hair behind his ear. "I didn't even notice."
"He makes you happy. He has secrets, we know this, but hell, so does everyone. I think you should stick this one out. He is good for you." Chase clapped him on the arm. "I'll stay at Mary's tonight, so feel free to bring him back to the apartment."
"Thanks Mom," Aiden muttered cheekily.
Chase pushed him towards the carpark. "Get out of here."
Aiden smiled back at him. "Thank-you, Chase."
"Anytime, sweetheart."
Aiden laughed as he walked back to his car. He hopped in the driver's seat.
"What was that about?" Oliver asked.
Aiden picked up the keys from the dash board. "Chase was telling me that we have the apartment to ourselves tonight," Aiden told him.
"Is this where you explain how you are going to make it worth my while?" Oliver asked with a wink that Aiden saw out the corner of his eye.
Aiden laughed. "Ice-cream is how I make it worth your while."
"Kinky." Oliver laughed.
Aiden reached over and gently slapped Oliver's arm. "Mind out of the gutter, young man."
Oliver just laughed as they drove in the direction of the ice-cream place.
