Chapter 3: Patton
Virgil made a pouty face. He was upset that Remy and "the punching bag" left without him to the beach. The whole school knew that Virgil loves to swim and was a very powerful swimmer, especially in the ocean.
I shook my head. Logan entered the room, wearing a galaxy print dress under a simple, black, unzipped sweatshirt. "Hey, Patt?" Logan asked.
"Yes?" I answer, absently sewing together a hat with cat ears. He kissed my forehead. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going down to the library," he replied, "Don't come looking for me." He checked his phone.
"'Kay. Have fun. Say hi to Mr Kasie for me," I smile.
"Okay, I will," Logan agreed, walking out of the room after leaving a package on the desk for me. I open it to find cookies for me. Oh my gosh, Logan! You know me so well.
Virgil made a noise from the couch, hiding under his blanket.
I studied his figure on the couch before deciding that a man had to do what a man had to do. "Hey, Virge? Want a cookie? They're chocolate-chip," I ask, offering him a baked good.
"I need," he grunted, snatching the cookie from me and retreating under the blanket again. I smiled crookedly, petting his quilt-covered form. After a moment, I realized that soft sobs were shaking his body.
"So hormonal. What else is wrong other than how they left you behind?" I asked as I started mending some of Logan's dresses and skirts. Virgil sort of sat up in a technically upright position.
"Of our friend group, I'm the only single person right now," he whispers, "You have Logan and Remy was holding Deceit's hand this morning and sharing goofy grins each time their eyes met. I don't like being the fifth wheel." Virgil concluded, his voice breaking.
"Oh... I didn't think about that. I'm so sorry." I say, putting my sewing down and holding him in my lap. I tilt his head up so I could see his face.
His long, black eyelashes had tears stuck in them and those beautiful brown eyes held a pain much stronger than I had heard in his voice. His lower lip quivered. I took his face in my hands, frowning.
"Virgil Timothy Burton! That is something I won't have in my dorm room! Not now, not ever! No self-pity allowed!!" I scold, mooshing his cheeks and furrowing my brow. "You'll find someone who wants to give you everything and more than they can give! I promise." I let go of his face to hug him tightly.
He cried into my shoulder for a half an hour.
