Chapter 2
We soon made it to the mining fields, and it was just as I imagined it. Brown, large, and dark. There were miners all over the place, their thick beards covered in ore dust. They gave a small bow as Sky, Jason and I walked past. I gave a small smile, and the miner returned it.
"Hey Cooper, know any good mining spots?" I asked one of the miners that were closest to me. He nodded, and pointed his finger over at one of the far tunnels. I nodded to him in thanks, and Sky motioned me and Jason over to the far tunnel that Cooper had pointed out. He made sure we had everything; water, torches, and pick axes, before he started leading us down. It was hot, dark, and very cramped on the small staircase that led to the main chasm. We had to go down in a single file line, with Sky in the front, me in the middle, and Jason in the back. We were all so hunched together that I was able to feel Jason's warm breath on my neck.
"It's so dark down here." I muttered. Jason then quickly pulled out some flint and steal and a stick. With a quick flick of the wrist, the stick was on fire, and Jason was holding it high above his head so we could see our surroundings. I heard the sound of wind and a light breeze blew across my face. I smiled, realizing that we were approaching the main cave. Sure enough, we were down in the main cave in a matter of seconds. Jason placed the torch sturdily on the ground, and pulled the pickaxes out of our bags. He handed one to me and Sky.
"Ok. Me and Jason will head down this way." Sky said, pointing down a small tunnel nearby. "Ty, will you be ok by yourself?" Sky asked. I nodded.
"Of course I'll be fine Sky. Why wouldn't I be? We've done -yawn- this a million times before." I said, and Sky nodded, giving me a quick glance of uncertainty. Jason whispered something in Sky's ear, but I wasn't able to hear what he said.
"Alright then. Holler if you need us, ok?" Sky said, and I nodded. We then separated. I walked down one of the caves on the left, and Sky and Jason went down one on the right.
I listened to the sounds of the cave, the calm wind blowing in my face. I listened out for mobs, but luckily heard none. I hadn't been walking for more than 5 minutes before I found a vein of coal. I pulled out the iron pick Jason had given me, and threw it into the ore with a grunt. I pulled the pick back out, Adams repeated the step again. The coal ore broke, and little coal chucks landed on the ground, puffing a little bit of their awful black soot. I coughed as the soot flew into my face.
"Why does this stuff have to do that." I grumbled between coughs. I cleared my throat, even though it was burning, and repeated the process more and more times.
I had finally mined the last of the coal vein, each time adding another layer of the burning feeling to my throat. My throat was burning so badly that it felt like I had swallowed sandpaper. I picked up the final chunks of coal on the ground, threw them in my miner bag, and kept walking. I saw another vein of coal not too far from the first one, but I decided my throat wouldn't be able to handle anymore of the revolting soot. I could come back for the coal later.
(Time skip Lel)
I was starting to feel my sleepiness taking effect after 2 or 3 hours of being in the mines. My swings were slower, my eyes felt droopy, and I had nearly fallen into lava a few times because I hadn't been watching where my feet were going.
Maybe Sky was right. Maybe I should have stayed back. I thought to myself as I finished up a relatively small vein of iron.
Yea....I guess I should just go tell Sky that I feel too tired to mine anymore. I told myself. I picked up my miners bag, and made sure I had everything before I started to exit the cave.
-----------
I had decided it was best just to retrace my steps to lead me back to the main cave. I looked along the walls of the cave, following my torch trail. I started humming as I walked through the cave, looking around at the beauty of the cave I was in. The lava nearby was casting a warm light, one that made me feel somewhat cozy in the grey cave.
Hey Ty, I dare you to run down into that cave, and bring back a bucket of lava! A young Sky yelled happily at his friend. Ty looked over at him, nervously adjusting his neon green headphones.
"I...I don't know Sky....it seems kinda dangerous..." Ty squeaked. "I mean, neither of our dads have ever taken us down there. We might get in trouble." He said, trying to keep his voice steady.
"Oh fine. I'll come with you. Come on!" Sky said happily, grabbing Ty's arm.
"Sky!" Ty yelled nervously, liking around incase anyone were too see them.
"Stop worrying Ty! Have some fun!" Sky said, pulling him down the closest staircase. They were running down the dark stairs when Sky accidentally lost his footing, and started tumbling down the stairs. Ty lost his balance as well, seeing that Sky was still holding onto him during the time. They tumbled down the stairs, and landed with a loud thud at the bottom. Ty was all spread out, his limbs everywhere. (no they didn't break off his body eww :3) Ty felt someone shaking him roughly. He opened his eyes and saw Sky on top of him, clutching his shoulders.
"Ty! Ty are you ok?!" Sky asked nervously, looking at Ty's arms and legs. Ty pushed Sky off of me. He looked angrily at him. Sky shrunk back a bit. Ty looked at him for a second, and a smile broke out on his face. He started laughing. Sky looked surprised at first, not expecting his friend's reaction, but he smiled and then joined into the laughter as well.
"That was awesome!" Ty yelled happily, hugging Sky. Sky hugged him back.
"It was so awesome! Now come on! Let's get that lava!" Sky cried happily. Ty ran right behind Sky, into the dark cave.
I smiled as I looked around the cave. This was the one that me and Sky had fallen into when we were younger.
"Wow...time sure flies fast..." I muttered to myself as I turned a corner. Maybe I could bring Sky down here again....see if he remembered....
My thoughts were interrupted, however, when I heard a strange noise
"Hello?" I called, my voice echoing off the cave.
Hello....hello......hello........hello......
"Hello?" I said again.
I heard the wiz of something fly past my ear, and a dull pain followed the noise. My hand shot up to my ear. I looked at my fingers and saw that they were covered in blood. Something had nicked my ear. I flipped my head around and saw an arrow stuck in the stone behind me, shaking from the impact of the stone. I flipped my head back around to see a hoard of skeletons coming at me from out of no-where. My eyes grew wide, and I started running. I dropped my backpack, hoping to use it as a momentary road block, but the skeletons just mearly kicked into a nearby lava pool. I ran for my life, hearing the wiz of arrows and the rush of pure adrenaline in my veins.
Where did these things come from?!" I said through shaky breathes. I hurdled over a few holes in the ground and landed. The skeletons, who were on my tail, imitated me perfectly.
"Sky! Jason! Help!" I screamed as more arrows flew over my head. I turned around another corner, and down a few tunnels.
"Sky! Jason! Help me please!" I screamed again. I jumped over a pile stone blocks like a pro, but unfortunately, as I did, a skeleton decided to shoot an arrow and actually aim well, and it made contact with my leg. I stumbled on my landing from the immediate pain in my leg from the arrow, and I ended up tumbling down into a hole in the mine. I landed at the bottom with a nasty thud, and after getting over my moment of shock, I grabbed my leg tightly, and pulled it close to my body.
"Sky! Jason! Anyone!" I screamed one more time. The skeletons jumped down the hole, landing on their feet with almost no noise at all, and starting to surround me. I reached to my sheath for my sword, but it wasn't there. My eyes grew wide as I realized where it was. I had put it into my miners bag when I was packing up. My miners bag was in lava.
I was defenseless.
