tae 🐘💕: i'd like to hear you deny it over the phone please

AHA

AS I SUSPECTED

you didn't answer 😏😏😏

jungkook: stop sending me smirking emojis

tae 🐘💕: only if you call me

Jungkook sighs, though a faint smile plays on his lips as he presses Tae's contact, listening to it ring only twice before Taehyung answers joyfully.

"Hey-o, buddy-o."

"I'm hanging up."

"What! No!"

Jungkook chuckles. "Fine, I'll give you another chance."

"All my prayers have been answered," Taehyung teases. "So, I have a question. You're probably not going to like it, but I'm going to ask anyways, okay?"

"Um, okay..."

"So..." Taehyung starts hesitating, which is something Jungkook has never heard before. The only other time Taehyung seemed nervous was when he said he liked Jungkook, but he hung up before Jungkook could hear him flustered. "Never mind."

"Hey, only I can do that," Jungkook says with a pout. "What is it?"

"Well." Taehyung clears his throat. "The Valentine's Day dance is tomorrow night and I know you'll probably say no because you don't want to talk to me but I was really hoping that maybe possibly you could go with me and..."

Jungkook blushes at the offer, though the fact that Taehyung is so nervous over asking him and he's rambling makes Jungkook grin widely.

"And now you aren't saying anything which is only going to make me ramble more and it's really not fair of you to do this to me and—"

"Taehyung," Jungkook says quietly. "Are you asking me to be your Valentine?"

Taehyung pauses. "Would it... would it be a problem if I was?"

Jungkook traces an invisible pattern on his desk with his finger. "No," he all but whispers.

"So... is that a yes?"

Jungkook's chest aches at how hopeful the older boy sounds. "Hyung...."

Taehyung sighs heavily. "So a no, then."

"Not the Valentine part," Jungkook says quickly. "Just the... the dance part."

"You can't be my Valentine on Valentine's Day if you don't go to the dance with me," Taehyung argues softly, his logic going against Jungkook's utmost fear. When Jungkook doesn't answer, Taehyung speaks again. "Look, I know you're scared or whatever but... Can you at least try? I really planned on being patient for you, but it's really difficult. I almost broke my promise today in the gym."

Jungkook bites his bottom lip. He feels guilty, like he's toying with Taehyung somehow. Maybe it's greedy of him to want all these conversations but he won't talk to the boy in person. Maybe it's selfish. It most definitely is. He needs to think from Taehyung's perspective to know how the boy feels for once.

"Okay," he whispers, his voice trembling. He already feels anxious at the thought, his throat closing up.

"I just really want to see you in person and—wait, what? Really?"

"Yeah," Jungkook says, still barely audible. "Won't you... won't you be embarrassed, though?"

"What?" Taehyung all but shrieks. "Embarrassed? Why would I be?"

"Because... you'll be at the dance with a boy a-and with me."

"Jungkook, I don't know how else to prove to you that I like your appearance, but I like your personality even more. Besides, all my friends know I'm bi, and the people who don't like it can screw off."

Jungkook blinks, his eyes watering. He mentally scolds himself for being so sensitive, so pathetic.

"If I didn't want to go to the dance with you," Taehyung says, quieter now, "I wouldn't have asked."

"I don't know why you do," Jungkook admits sheepishly.

"I should slap you in the head tomorrow. That'll be two slaps in the back of the head for you."

"I'm just being honest."

"You're being blind, Jungkook-ah."

His heart skips a beat and his cheeks flush.

"I have to go help set up the table for dinner, but I'll call you later if you want," Taehyung says. "Would that be okay?"

Jungkook smiles. "Yeah, that's okay."

When the two hang up, Jungkook's mom conveniently calls up to him that dinner is ready. He takes his phone with him downstairs, not realizing that he's still clutching onto it. He sets it on the table and tells his mother he'll get the plates so she can sit down.

When he comes back, Jungkook's heart stops as his mom looks up at him from peering down at his phone. She notices him, her expression blank. "It lit up, I wasn't snooping, I promise. But... Jungkook, tell me the truth. Who's Tae?"
