Coming Out
Jonathan stares at himself in the mirror as an older man goes around, trying to find the perfect suit for the groom. Classical music plays over the radio in the store. The piece of music has a heavy violin beat to it. With each note from the string instrument Jonathan can merely picture Evan undoing the dark blue bow tie of his and throwing it to the side. Jonathan pushing Evan against the bed; holding his hands at the bed frame. Undoing the rest of Evan’s tux. Jonathan pictures it being red, or yellow. One of Evan’s favorite colors. Jonathan nearly ripping the black fabric from Evan’s chest. The photographer crawling over the model and teasingly moving his hands down to his lover’s suit pants. Jonathan’s pallid hand unzipping the pants and slowly sliding them off. His finger trailing down Evan’s tan thigh- “Jonathan!” The blue-eyed man turns to his mother. “Yes?”
“Mr. Yin has found you another suit,” she explains. Jonathan turns to the mirror and smiles, “Actually, I love this one Mr. Yin.”
Evan and Jenny ride home with music quietly playing as the two stir up a conversation. Jenny’s hands grip tightly on the steering wheel. She sighs, “So what were your questions from before?” Evan turns to her and chuckles, “Should I go one at a time?”
“Yes, please.” They both weirdly laugh. Evan clears his throat, “So, does your mom or dad know?”
“No,” Jenny admits, “but I think they both have a feeling I am.” Evan nods, “Oh.” He then looks at Jenny as she frowns a little bit. “Are you afraid of telling them?” Jenny makes quick eye contact with Evan and then focuses back on the road, “That wasn’t one of your questions.”
“No, but it seems like one a gay brother-in-law should ask.” Jenny slightly chuckles, “I guess you’re right.” The only daughter of Cassandra and Matthew Dennis pulls into the driveway with her little blue car. “We’ll continue this conversation inside,” she states. Evan goes in first and starts a pot of coffee. Jenny grabs her dress and smiles at the quick memory of what happened merely an hour ago.
Evan grabs the two cups and sits down in the living room. Jenny comes down the stairs from her room and sits down beside Evan. She sips her coffee and moves her legs up onto the coffee table. “So, my family is very republican so I was also sorta afraid of coming out, but then again I’m also republican. I was so afraid I’d never find anyone to date, because stereotypically LGBT people are democratic.” Evan takes a sip of his coffee and leans on his knees, “Well first of all, I didn’t know Jonathan was republican, but that doesn’t change the way I feel for him. Political views shouldn’t matter Jenny.”
“I know. I know.”
“If Nomi, or a future girlfriend of yours shoves everything in your face or just totally hates you for your certain opinions; they aren’t worth it.” Jenny smiles at Evan, “Thanks.”
“And your parents are wonderful people. Sometimes it takes them a bit to accept a new form of you. For example, they have to get used to the type of music you like, or a new musical you’re obsessed with. Hell, how’d your parents take it when Jonathan came out?”
“Oh God,” Jenny laughs, “Well, I was in 5th grade, Sam just started 9th grade and Johnny was in 7th.”
Jonathan busts through the door crying. He throws his book bag onto the couch and runs to his room. Cassandra looks worriedly at her husband. She then waits for Sam to get home. Finally her eldest son walks through the door, “Samuel! What’s wrong with Johnny?”
“Whata mean?”
“He came home crying!”
A weird look goes across the 14 year old’s face, “He was perfectly fine on the bus.” His mother puts her hands on her hips, “Hmm.” She clicks her tongue and marches back to Jonathan’s room. She quietly knocks on the door. It creaks open to a young sobbing clown. Teary blue eyes stare into darker blue eyes. “Johnny, what’s wrong?” She sits on the edge of the bed. Grabbing her son’s leg. Jonathan tries to stop sobbing. He was afraid of his own feelings. His heart would thump every time he’d walk near or even think about this one boy. He didn’t know what to do. He shakingly looks up at his mother. “Johnny, you can tell me anything. I hope you know that.” The 7th grader scoots closer to his mother, “Mo-Mom,” he sobs, “I think-”
“You think what baby?” Cassandra wraps one arm around Jonathan.
The lighter blue eyes stare up at darker blue ones. Tears form in Jonathan’s eyes once again, “I think I’m gay.” Cassandra smiles at her son and hugs him tightly. “Please don’t tell Dad yet!”
“I won’t sweetie,” she places a kiss on his cheek. Before she shuts the door she say one more thing, “It’s okay to love whoever you want Jonathan!” The 7th grader smiles and sucks up his tears. He continues daydreaming about the boy at school and tries to focus on his algebra homework.
“Wow, so when did Dad figure it out?” Evan questions Jenny. She laughs again, “He actually mentioned you when he did. It kinda slipped and Dad was just always okay with it.” Evan smiles at the thought of Delirious going on and on about Evan and getting red-faced about him.
Later that night the engaged couple leave the Dennis family and make their way to the Fong family.
