Chapter 56

" In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt, as injustice. "

- Charles Dickens

(Rouen, France, 9:10 PM)

The Kree-Lizard boy was still sleepless which he couldn't shut his eyes as his mother noticed him. Carol secretly read her son's mind and gently rubbed his scaly forehead as he intently looked at her. She was probing and waiting for him to speak-up. Silence and Darkness of the evening had not affected the hybrid which he never wanted to sleep and thought of going back to his translating work, while staring at his table.

" Still sleepless, Kid? " she asked and chuckled.

" Yes, mother. One more paragraph and I could finally put myself to rest, " he replied and yawned.

" I already knew that. By the way, you wanted to tell me something? "

" About what? "

" Well, I was wondering of what kind of people did you let them live here, " Carol said and raised her right hand in interjection.

" Let's see, we have Inhumans, mutants, Faunus, exiled Kree, Lizards, ordinary humans, " the boy spoke and scratched his chin. " Then, we have Shade the Abyss Watcher. "

" Abyss Watcher? "

" Mother, he's really brutal and dangerous, " he said. " He wanted to surpass someone with the Light Soul like you and become the most powerful being. I met him five years ago. I saw him how killed those enemies on the streets of Rouen before. "

" What kind of powers does he have? "

" Energy from the Dark Soul. Mom, If I were you, you have to be careful and extremely nice to him. "

" Does he still live here? "

" No, " he instantly answered. " Well, it's just he has something to do on his own. You know what..."

" Right, " Carol nodded.

" But there's a person who actually likes and befriends him. She's a mutant. "

" Who? "

" Let me tell you, how I met her. "

(FIVE YEARS AGO: Streets of Rouen)

It was a rainy and cloudy morning when the dark grey nimbus clouds had walked above the city. The Seine river's water level became full which it was about to overflow. The flood on the streets was knee deep which the soldiers of the Kree-Lizard legion kept walking despite of the bad weather condition. The Kree-Lizard boy had gone out of the mansion and started to find food on the garbage which he usually has been doing before. On the streets, the hybrid heard murmurs of the mysterious entity with a Dark Soul who had slayed a lot of people. The boy knew who the person being mention and ignored the conversation.

He continued diving and digging for food in the dumpsters and found empty bottles of red wine, rotten fruits, and discarded boxes. The boy heavily sighed and became hopeless in searching for more treasures from his scavenger hunt. Just then, he stopped doing his garbage exploits and heard a noise from a distance. Looking around, he had gone running and searching for that source. In the other side of the streets, he saw a young dark-haired girl crying over the dead bodies of her parents. She had been staying there for days since their tragic demise.

The boy felt pity for that girl and stood beside her. She was still weeping, although she ignored the putrid smell of those decaying bodies. He gently patted her shoulders and waited for her to speak up, however, the girl was not responding to him and still crying.

" She surely had a tough time in seeing how her loved ones got killed, " he thought and sadly sighed. " I hope I could help her. "

The girl rubbed her eyes, noticed the hybrid beside her, and gasped to her surprise. She was frightening to see him and thinking he was one of those people who murdered her parents. She wanted to run away, but the boy hindered to that.

" Who are you?! " she raised her voice. " What do you want from me?! "

" Kid, I'm not going to hurt you," the Kree-Lizard spoke. " I need to know what's going on. Don't worry, I'm going to help you. "

" Help?! You're the ones who killed my parents?! "

" No! No! No! You got me wrong! "

" What do you mean?! "

" I was just finding something to eat earlier in the dumpsters, then I found you crying over your parents, " he said. " I never killed them. Those enemies did. "

The girl remained silent and heard what the boy had said. She thought deeply which she had been in the alley for two days and staying without food and drink. The Kree-Lizard looked at her deceased parents and also wanted to help her bury them in a cemetery.

" You're telling the truth, aren't you? " she asked.

" Yes, I just need to help you bury your parents, " the hybrid replied. " But we need to avoid those people who came after you. "

" You mean the lizards and the blue skins? "

" Just come with me, " he said and carried the two bodies as the girl nodded and followed him.

The two went through the main streets of the city where the flood became more overflowing. The girl was afraid to go on as the hybrid allowed her to hop on his back, reminding her to watch out for his sharp spikes. She held them as they continued going, despite of finding themselves wet. The guards of Kree-Lizard legion found the two as they pointed their weapons on them.

" Arrêt! Ne bouge pas! (Halt! Don't move!) " the French speaking reptilian man yelled at them.

" What are they saying? " the girl lowly asked.

" I don't know! " the boy replied and felt uneasy to encounter the soldiers.

" Êtes-vous SCP-682 ou le fils de Methu-Selah? (Are you SCP-682 or the son of Methu-Selah?) " the pink Kree soldier added.

" What are you guys talking about?! I don't know what you're saying..." he raised his voice.

" Vous ne pouvez pas parler en français, hein? (You cannot speak in French, eh?) "

The Kree-Lizard boy and the girl found themselves surrounded by the enemies once again. She was afraid to confront the murderers which she never wanted to experience that again. The boy couldn't fight back as he was still carrying the bodies of the girl's parents. The pink skinned Kree signaled his company to execute the two. For the cornered ones, they were about to face deaths. Suddenly, there was a strange portal coming out from the nowhere when the soldiers got sucked-in and yelled in extreme fear. Then, there was a large canine-looking monster eating them. A blonde woman with a set of dark horns appeared and held a sword. The Kree commander and his lizard counterpart were both terrified in meeting her.

" Qui êtes vous?! (Who are you?! ) " they both asked and raised their voices.

" I'm sorry I don't speak French..." the woman evilly grinned and laughed. " The name's Ilyana Rasputina. Everyone calls me Magik! "

" M-Magik?! "

" Is there a problem, boys? "

Magik summoned a spell of freeze to the enemies and slashed them with a sword. The Kree-Lizard boy and the girl were both surprised to see her act. The two soldiers had met their demise as the flood ended up as an ocean of blood. The woman smiled and gently patted her monster when she asked him to return to the portal. The girl recognized the mutant warrior and hugged her.

" Grandma! "

" Cassie, you're here! " Ilyana or Magik hugged her back.

The Kree-Lizard boy got dumbfounded, still carrying those bodies. He had no idea and kept staring at the grandmother and granddaughter. Ilyana Rasputina noticed him and crossed her arms. Her granddaughter stood beside the demon mutant woman.

" Who are you? " she indignantly asked and raised her eyebrows.

" Ma'am, my name is Svet, " he politely answered. " Those people were right. They identify me as SCP-682, but I'm just a clone of that monster. I have come all the way from America and lived in Russia. Then, I traveled throughout Europe to find the Kree Eternal. "

" Itak, vy mozhete pogovorit' so mnoy po-russki? (So, you can converse me in Russian?) "

" Da, ya obnaruzhil, chto tvoya vnuchka plachet po pogibshim roditelyam. YA reshil pomoch' yey pokhoronit' ikh i nayti yey novyy dom. (Yes, I found your granddaughter crying for her dead parents. I decided to help her bury them and find her a new home.) "

" Ponimayu. YA mogu pomoch' vam pokhoronit' ikh, no ya mogu vyzvat' zaklinaniye, idushcheye na kladbishche. (I see I can help you bury them, but I can summon a teleporting spell going there.) "

" Zaklinaniye teleportatsii? (Teleporting Spell?) "

" Watch and learn, " Magik smiled and summoned a bright portal going to the cemetery.

The young girl and the hybrid nodded no furiously as they stepped in. The old blonde mutant followed them when they arrived in minutes. The three kept walking and finding for a vacant burial lot where they could bury the two people who died few days ago. Just then, they found a hole at the farthest corner of the place. They headed there as the boy carefully carried down the two decaying bodies.

" There, " the hybrid spoke and looked at the lot. " I guess I need help to put them there. I wonder how deep is this one? "

" It's six feet below, " the old mutant lady replied. " I can put them down. "

" How? "

" I can levitate them, " she smiled and softly answered.

Ilyana uttered a levitating spell in Russian which the two bodies began to float and descended to the hole. The boy got dumbfounded to see as the mutant's granddaughter silently wept and rubbed her eyes. He understood how painful she had lost her loved ones and sadly sighed.

" Surely, she had a rough time to see how they died, " he thought and looked at her. " I hope she could recover from all of these. "

Moments later, the deceased loved ones were dug up when the young girl left a bunch of flowers. She knelt down and wept as Ilyana and the Kree-Lizard watched behind her.

" I watched my granddaughter with her parents being taken away from me in Xavier's mansion few months ago, " the mutant sorceress said. " Those invaders had done all the skirmish and horror to our people in this world. "

" I understood that, " the hybrid replied and nodded. " I have seen a lot of casualties to them, every time I go to different places. I used to raid in some slave dens, before. "

" Slave dens?! " she repeated the words. " But, they're dangerous! You can be caught or killed! "

" Several times, but I managed to help the slaves attain their freedom. "

" I see. We do have in common then, " Ilyana nodded as she understood. " I have been doing this for years, ever since the Kree-Lizard legion invaded the whole planet. My family have been fighting against them from America to some parts of the world in years. Those deceased ones were my son-in-law and my daughter. "

" I'm so sorry for the loss of your family, " the Kree-Lizard boy sadly spoke. " I understood how painful it was to see deaths. "

" Thank you, Svet. "

" I hope you and your granddaughter can pull through after this, " he added. " By the way, what's your name? "

" Ilyana Rasputina, Magik. That girl is my granddaughter, Cassandra Rains. "

The boy nodded and stood beside the young girl. He remembered those times when he lost Mar-Vell and late girlfriend which he could relate to her. Cassandra turned her attention to him and sadly sighed.

" I'm sorry for what happened, " he calmly spoke. " Kid, they would be watching for you, but all I know is you'll be having a new family and a home. "

" Really? " Cassandra raised her tone and doubtfully raised her eyebrows. " You're one of those bad guys, right? I don't understand..."

" Look, I'm just trying to help. "

" Help? You're gonna...."

" No, no... I'm secretly helping people around besides no one from the Chaos Insurgency or the Kree Empire knows what I am doing. It's okay. I already talked with your grandmother, " the boy replied and turned to the mutant.

" I agree, " Ilyana smiled and nodded. " Svet will give you a home, my dear. I can visit you from the Limbo. "

" Grandma, are you sure? "

" Yes, Cassie. Don't worry, he will help you. "

Cassie slightly smiled and sighed as she looked at the Kree-Lizard hybrid and her grandmother. Despite of her loss, she decided to go on. The two waited for her to come with the boy.

" Okay, I'm coming..." she nodded.

Ilyana joined along with the three in walking going to the forest. The skies had gradually become clear blue and sunny as they took some time in walking. Cassie kept looking around as she was afraid to see more of the invaders hiding and coming around their way. Ilyana held her granddaughter's hand and smiled, assuring that everything would be all right for now. Finally, the three reached the mansion and headed to the doorway.

" It looks like a ghost building, but you can see more people in there, " the Kree-Lizard boy said. " Don't worry, Ilyana. I will take care of your granddaughter. "

" I think this is a safe place for my granddaughter, " Ilyana smiled and said. " Thank you, Svet. "

" You're welcome. "

The demon mutant sorceress hugged her young relative and kissed her forehead. This showed how they could separate and say goodbye to each other. The Kree-Lizard boy crossed his arms and slightly smiled at the two when Ilyana had summoned a portal returning to the Limbo. Cassie waved and then opened the door. The two entered where they saw a community of Inhumans, Mutants, Faunus, Half-Lizards, and aliens living. She saw a dark haired man wearing dark clothes, sitting in the farthest corner of the living room.

" Ummm... I don't know how to..." Cassie paused with an unsure tone.

" Well, you can talk to them if you want, " the boy replied and turned to the man. " Oh, that's Shade. Now go and make friends with him. Come on! "

" Sure, thanks, Svet..."

Cassandra Rains wanted to approach him, as Shade curiously eyed on her and sensed a powerful energy on that girl. He wanted to talk to her, but Cassie was too shy and aloof to meet with the other refugees and escapees. Her mind was still on her parents' demise and her grandmother living on the Limbo. Shade turned his attention to her and thought of talking to her anytime soon.

(Moments Later)

The slightly younger Abyss Watcher sat in a old bench in his lonesome as he looked at the sunset. He was too tired in dealing with children inside the mansion which he was forced to do some chores. He sadly sighed and then turned to the scarlet clouds walking over the bright yellow sun.

" I can't believe I'm plaything the role of babysitter for the rest of this week. I have better things to do than this! " he grudgingly thought. Cassie sat alone on the grass as she saw Shade. She was singing an old song which he got mesmerized at her soft and sweet voice. He intently listened to her.

" Someday I'll wish upon a star

And wake up where the clouds are far

Behind me

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

Away above the chimney tops

That's where you'll find me....

Somewhere over the rainbow

Bluebirds fly

Birds fly over the rainbow

Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly

Beyond the rainbow

Why, oh why can't I? "

Cassie stopped singing, turned to him, and asked, " Hello? "

Shade glared at her, " What do you want? "

" I'm just curious why are you looking at the same sunset at the same time? "

" It's just a coping mechanism I use. "

" Oh I see. It's so beautiful to see the sunset even the sky's colors are changing. "

" Well, yes, have you ever open a science book before? "

" Yeah, the earth's rotation to the sun affects the atmosphere's colors aside from time. It does really makes sense why, " she replied.

" Everything comes done to science when it comes to figuring out everything in the universe, or even life, " he answered.

" Right. "

Shade continued looking at the sunset as he remained the same look, " It looks appears it about to be night. It's time to head back now. "

" Sure. "

The watcher got up as he made his way near the shelter.

" I'll see you later, " Cassie said.

" Cassie..." he turned around.

" What is it? "

" Nothing...you can come along with me, " he said. " I want to know more about you..."

Cassie slightly smiled, nodded, and joined the Abyss Watcher as they walked their way to the mansion. From a distance, the Kree-Lizard boy watched the two coming and busied himself in finishing sweeping the porch.

(FIVE YEARS LATER)

" Well, this is how they met and from then on Shade helped her improved her skills in magic. Then, Ilyana was happy for the two to become friends, " the Kree-Lizard boy continued.

" Interesting, " Carol smiled and noticed her son yawning. " I guess you need to count sheep again..."

" Right, " he nodded and laid down on his bed. " Good night, mom. "

" Good night, Kid. Sweet Dreams! "
