Seven

An uncomfortable silence was in the air as the helicopter took off.

The wind chased through your (H/C) hair and made it all messy.

Gaz and Alex were sitting at one side, while you and Price shared the other.

In that moment you realised how broad he actually was. Between the two of you was one empty seat, but whenever the helicopter took a turn or a stronger breeze made it shake, his shoulder bumped into yours.

With lowered eyes you spread your legs to get a good stretch. Your hand was laying on the riffle to secure it on your chest.

"I think we got off on the wrong foot.", you said over the headset. "I'd apologies, but I'm not in the wrong here, mate."

You grinned.

Price sighed. It was deep sigh, heavy enough to make his chest shake.

You could feel the vibration of it and immediately had to think about what other strength that body was hiding. One wrong word and he could probably choke the life out of you.

To your luck, he seemed to have quite the patience.

"Yeah, well I don't like being questioned in my authority.", Price adjusted his vest.

"Neither do I. One thing that brings us closer together, beanie."

He frowned.

"Don't call me that."

You huffed and leaned your head back.

"But I will."

"You know you're not making a great first impression."

With a playfully hurt expression you looked at him.

"This ain't our first meeting, did you already forget?", you asked. "I bought you drinks cause I thought you were handsome."

For a moment the compliment threw him out of concept. But not a second later he realised that it wasn't meant sincere but as a tease.

"I liked you for the pints.", he said and turned his gaze away again.

"Hurtful words, really.", you joked. "Either way, we need to make this work like a couple who desperately wants a divorce but can't because of the kids."

He frowned.

"Bit odd to say.", he noted. "But you're not wrong. Just follow my lead and we should get along."

You laughed.

"As if I'd do that...", you snorted. "I'm in command also. No matter what you want, it will always have to be checked by me. And if I'm against it, we won't do it. Understood? Great. Always good to have people who know their place."

A low sound escaped his bearded lips. But he didn't jump onto that opportunity to start a fight. It seemed like he was already starting to be fed up and tried to keep some of his patience together.

For another moment everything was silent.

That was until Gaz wanted to join in on the conversation.

"Captain?", he asked over the radio.

"Hm?", you and Price answered at the same time.

Immediately, a tense silence filled the air.

You and Price gifted each other a deadly glare.

"Be more specific, sergeant.", Price demanded.

Garrick swallowed hard.

"The- the captain...", he said, looking between him and you. "The captain captain."

"That would be me.", you purred and gifted Price a sadistic grin. "What's up?"

Before talking, Garrick's eyes jumped to Price, who then nodded his head as a sign it was okay.

It bothered you that the two of them already had a good connection. You knew all too well that a team that liked each other was a team that worked.

That alone gave Price a dangerous advantage compared to you. He already had the trust of half the team and was at least familiar with the other. At the bar he had mentioned that he knew Alex from a mission as well so you were the odd one out in the group.

That alone threatened your authority. Gaz and Alex were most likely going to side with Price when it came to orders and decision making.

To add to that he didn't even seem to be a bad guy.

It just bothered the shit out of you that he tried to share your authority. Usually you were the one who gave orders and played the hero. Or at least the maniac that got the job done.

Price, however, was going to be the voice of reason.

Something that you admittedly lacked.

A sigh made your chest tremble.

"Captain?", Garrick asked again.

With expectation shimmering in his dark eyes, he looked at you.

You snapped out of your thoughts.

"Huh?", you blinked. "Did I miss something?"

Price sighed, audibly annoyed. He picked your distracting thoughts up as a lack of discipline.

But you knew that this racing brain of yours had saved many lives in dangerous situation many times.

Alex cleared his throat.

"We didn't get lots of intel on the mission.", he said. "Mind to share what you have, captain?"

He had a surprisingly soft voice for a soldier, smooth and almost soothing. It didn't the exterior of his body, but the look in his eyes.

After all those years of service he didn't loose his humanity. At least not yet.

You always liked to joke about it that you had been at war so many times you had turned into a cold hearted bitch. But it made you smile in satisfaction to see that people like Alex still existed in your line of work.

With two clicks you send a request to the pilot.

"How far are we?", you asked over the radio before answering the question.

"About halfway through.", the pilot informed. "Got word from the camp. It's under attack. Might need to land outside."

Understanding, you hummed and turned back to Alex.

"Truth is, I don't know shit.", you shrugged. "I don't know if you know Laswell, but she's not a women for every detail. She tells you to do things and let's you struggle with the rest. For now all I know is we need to make it to that camp. Maybe secure it. Could be anything."

Agreeing, Price hummed.

"Laswell doesn't get her hands dirty.", he added. "That's what she has us for. Unpleasant, but not surprising."

You grinned.

"You know what, beanie? I might start to like you."

"Can't return that."

"You know what they say. The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

"Laswell's your enemy?", Alex asked.

"No. But she ain't my friend either."
