Julian

I don't understand how everyone is just staying in this room so calm. All 12 of us went to the cell farthest from the dining hall. We have all been sitting here in silence. Every once in a while the girl named Katherine will speak trying to get people to interact, but it's always short lived. My mind is racing. I feel like I'm back on the track field. It required so much concentration to keep a steady beat and run as fast as you can. Surviving this will be no different.

Yes, I'm already picturing survival. I don't think that makes me a bad guy. I  know that I was created for more than to die at the hands of a psycho. Something about me has always believed that there's more to me than what I was given and that I was going to have to work and make something of myself.

These kids, no matter how nice, pretty, or smart they are will not get in my way.

I've been keeping track of their answers. Where their hometown is, what they do for fun, do they work. It's not a lot of information, but it's enough about them that gets me a little bit more information about them.

"I don't understand why we are all just sitting here," says a girl that's sitting in the corner of the room. She's ebony skin toned with dreadlocks that falls to her butt. She's muscular, not someone that I would ever want to get into a fight with, or better yet see her get into a fight. If her muscles weren't enough to intimidate you, her height alone would stop anyone dead in their tracks she has to be 6'2 at least. "There is 12 of us and not that many of them," she says. "It's time to act and get out of here. No one has to die,"

"I wouldn't do that," says an eerie voice from outside in the hallway. I tried to play it off like I wasn't scared, but that voice made me jump almost out of my skin. When we all turn around a girl with a china doll mask is staring at us with a scythe in her hand. "They call me the Reaper," she says calmly. "Every year we have kids who try to escape, but they never make it far," she says as she chuckles to herself. "I'll be right down the hall if you kids need anything, or you try to do something stupid," she adds as she begins to walk out of the doorway.

"So this is actually happening," says the girl with the freckles. She's gorgeous. If we weren't in the situation we were in currently, she'd definitely be someone I'd be trying to date. I think her name was Autumn?

"Looks like it, I've been trying to convince myself otherwise, but being locked in a cell seems to be pretty damning," I say quietly back to her.

She gives me a half grin and extends her hand. "My name is Autumn," she says. "Autumn Darling. What's your name?"

"Julian Mendoza," I say, "Where are you from, Autumn?"

"I'm from Baton Rouge," she says. "Yourself?"

"Dallas," I say back.

We notice that the rest of the group has their eyes on us, and we instantly start to go silent. The girl named Katherine stands up and looks at everyone in the eyes. "No, that's important," she says nodding to me.

Something about this girl tells me that she's used to be being a leader. I don't know if she used to be a cheerleader or maybe the student body President, but she commands the room when she speaks. It's a gift you don't often see in people that are our age.

"If we are going to have to fight to the death we all deserve to know each other. Every person in here deserves to be remembered. Their name, what they do. We need to introduce ourselves. Otherwise, this Eros guy wins, and I don't know about you guys, but I'm competitive."

I catch myself smiling at her words. Funny how that works right? We are faced with a life and death situation, and I still have it in me to smile. I have it in me to think about how stunning another person in this room is or be impressed with the girl that is such a strong leader. The truth is at the end of the day we all long for that community that keeps people going. No matter how short-lived, it will be.

"I guess I can start?" says the muscular girl from earlier. "My name is Alicia Sharp. I'm from Tulsa, and I was in the middle of my junior year of high school. I played soccer."

That explains the physical prowess from her.

We continue to go around the circle, and I have trouble remembering everyone's name. We get to the boy sitting next to Autumn, and he clears his throat. "My name is Eddy," he says. "I'm from Ontario, Canada, and I played water polo." I try not to let my eyebrows being raised show to the group as this kid looks to be the farthest thing from a swimmer.

He's short for starters, and why I wouldn't go as far to call him chunky, he's definitely not lean like most swimmers from my school. He quickly diverts his eyes to the floor, and I can just tell something is up. Something doesn't sit right with that guy.

"Hi, I'm Autumn Darling," she says. "I'm from Baton Rouge, and I was in beauty pageants."

I'm pretty sure that surprises no one in this circle. All the guys in this group have been caught staring at Autumn, even some of the girls have been staring at her in jealousy. Funny how the human mind works still, huh?

"I'm Julian Mendoza," I say not wanting to take to long to speak in between introductions. I decided early on when people were talking about what they did that I didn't want to look too impressive saying that I was an athlete. "I was into hiking," I say.

"And I'm Katherine LaClair. I'm from Houston, Texas, and I was in the choir," she says quickly wrapping up the circle of introductions. She sits back down on her stump and smiles at all of us. "To whoever gets out of here, I hope that you'll find our families. I know if I do I will track your families down. I can't help but worry about my mom and what she must be thinking while I'm sitting here,"

"I haven't stopped thinking of my grandmother," says Alicia quietly. "She's raised me since I was little. I don't want her to think I just left her,"

"Can I make a suggestion?" once again the whole room gets cold as chills run down my spine, turning around we see Eros and the girl who calls herself the "Reaper" standing in the doorway. "Tomorrow is going to start a long day for you," says Eros looking at him. "Sleep might not be a luxury you often have. I suggest getting some,"

He closes the door to the cell and locks it. Once again we are sitting in captivity, waiting for the warden to take pity on us.
