Chapter Nineteen

"That's twice Hijack has cornered me. Twice." Hannah snapped looking at Zach expectantly. "How does this keep happening?"

Zach glanced around the crowded coffee shop then back to her. "Could you lower your voice?" He leaned back in his seat trying to track Claudia and Magda as they waited at the counter. "It's no wonder you're getting cornered with that big mouth."

Hannah slumped back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. "I don't think you're taking this seriously enough," she grumbled.

"We're doing everything we can to keep you safe but there's only so much we can do Hannah," Zach tried to assure her. He scooted over a seat to let Claudia sit next to him while Magda took the seat by Hannah. They slid the coffees across to them and settled in.

"The real question is, why does he keep going after you but not really doing anything to you?" Magda wrapped her slender fingers around her latte. She'd tucked her gold curls up in a tight bun and was still in her work clothes. The only thing out of place was the engagement ring on a chain around her neck rather than on her finger.

"I...I think I have an idea why but it's crazy," Hannah mumbled. They all leaned in and she took a deep trembling breath. "I think Hijacks partner is Jake's friend."

"Really?" Zach pulled out his phone and scrolled through it quickly. He kept it tilted towards himself and scrolled through it quickly. "Which friend?"

"What do you mean which?" Hannah jumped up and dragged her chair around to look over his shoulder. "You have a list of Jake's friends?"

"We have lists about everyone," Zach admitted. "Which friend?"

"Warren Locke," Hannah whispered, eyeing a woman passing by. She watched Zach make a note and send a request for information but nothing else. "That's all you're doing?"

"I can't just take information from places Hannah, there are protocols," Zach insisted. He set his phone to the side and took his tea to take a testing sip.

"You know, sometimes I think Hijack and the others have the right idea. They take what they want when they need it, skip the middle stuff, and get the answers faster," Hannah grumbled.

Claudia shook her head at her. "When you begin to bend the rules you warp them from their original shape until it's unrecognizable what side of the line you began on."

"What she said...but maybe not quite so melodramatic," Zach teased.

"Still, I wouldn't mind having a guy like Hijack on our side," Hannah mused. The door opened and closed and they all glanced at it for just a second. They settled down again when the background chatter picked up.

"But he breaks the law every chance he gets," Magda pointed out, rubbing her thumb over her ring.

"Just some theft though. That's stuff he could work off in the right programs isn't it?" Hannah asked. Her eyes scanned the table looking for someone to agree. "I'm just saying, he's calm, smart and pretty handy with a computer. Neat gadgets too."

"Is this your way of telling me I suck at my job?" Zach scoffed. Beside him, Claudia groaned and pulled out her phone. "Don't you groan at me."

"Must you always be so insecure in your own worth Zachary?" she muttered.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" They went back and forth poking at each other while Hannah watched trying not to laugh. Magda tugged at her sleeve to get her attention.

"How can you be sure Hijack isn't dangerous?" Magda leaned forward trying to keep her voice low and Hannah followed her lead.

"I just have a feeling. Plus, if he'd really wanted to hurt me for information he wouldn't have hesitated. He was actually almost charming." Hannah shrugged and peeked down at her watch.

"Somewhere you need to be?" Claudia asked from across the table. Zach was beside her looking like a pouting child.

"No, just a little worried about Jake. Rough day for him," Hannah mumbled, her eyes flicking to Magda quickly before looking back at Claudia.

"Oh, right, that's today." Claudia shifted in her seat, tapping her fingers against her knee. "Is he..."

"Yeah, he drove out there this morning," Hannah answered the unfinished sentence. "Do you think it'd be weird if I just showed up? Is that too much?"

"You could go find out," Claudia suggested. "Want a ride? I can take you home if it doesn't go right."

"Nah, you stay. I'll call a ride," Hannah said as she stood. "See you guys. And Zach, you'll tell me of you find anything right?"

"You got it Shieldsy," Zach teased.

Hannah smacked his arm in the way by and started flipping through her phone.

The drive to the cemetery was only a half hour but it felt like an eternity. The driver constantly trying to offer his condolences didn't help either and she didn't bother trying to correct him. Once he'd settled into telling everyone story about every person he'd driven out there she had time to get lost in her own thoughts. He apologized for her loss once more as she exited the car and she nodded silently.

Finding the grave proved a little more difficult but she did eventually spot Jake's head of messy curls. She came to a complete stop still at least four rows back, digging her foot into the freshly watered grass. It was slick under her sneaker, as if she might skip if she tried to walk to fast. He shifted on his knees in front of the glossy headstone and she took a deep breath.

"Jake?" she called out to him, her voice wavering. He jerked his head around and his jaw dropped when he saw her.

"Why are you here?"

"I didn't...I didn't want you to be alone," Hannah stuttered. The grass squeaked under her feet as she moved towards him. He didn't move to make room for her or much at all really. It was only his eyes that tracked her. She pulled a small green bear out of her pocket and held it out between them. "I brought her something."

Jake kept still and stared at the bear between them. Slowly Hannah's hand lowered back towards her pocket and she took half a step backwards. "Hannah-"

"This was a bad idea wasn't it? I can just go, yeah, go," Hannah muttered quickly. The blood drained from her face and her knees started to wobble.

"Hannah," Jake called again. He reached a hand out to her. "I'm really glad you came."

She hurried to him, dropping down to her knees in the damp grass to hug him. They both took a long breath and tightened their arms around each other. Hannah was the first to pull away so that she could set the bear against the headstone.

"There you go Lorelei, a little friend," Hannah whispered.

"He's cute," Jake sighed. They were quiet again, reading the name and the dates printed across the black marble. A scold wind whipped through and Hannah huddled in closer to Jake. He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her tight to his warm side. The silence grew, broken only by the wind blowing through the trees in the distance.

"I was there that night you know," Hannah finally spoke.

"I know."

"I don't think I talked to her, not that I could remember if I did. I'd already been working for five hours by then and the tables just kept on coming," Hannah chuckled. "And I thought that was a long shift." She felt Jake smile as he pressed his lips to the side of her head.

"You can't even remember where you put your shoes at night," he teased.

"I'm pretty sure you move them while I'm asleep," she argued playfully. Jake kissed her head and his smile slowly dropped away.

"I'm just glad you got out okay," he whispered.

"Do you think if she'd lived we would have ever met?" Hannah picked at a blade of grass absently.

"Probably not."

"Do you ever wish things were different?"

Jake turned to grab both her shoulders and leaned in to make her meet his eyes. "I wish all the time that she hadn't died, every day. There was no reason for it," he began, pausing to nudge Hannah's chin back up when she lowered her face. "But I wouldn't trade you for anything, ever. You are the most important, and best thing that has ever happened to me."

He had to throw a hand back to keep them from falling into the grass as she launched herself at him.
