Chapter Eighteen

"All done for the night Hannah?" a doctor called out to her as she headed for the locker rooms.

"Yep, finally," she sighed. With flu season in full swing, Hannah had been picking up shifts left and right. Not only was she covering shifts for sick nurses but the clinic next door had been begging for help and she couldn't say no.

"You keep working yourself like this and you'll get yourself sick again," the doctor warned.

"I think I know my limits doctor," Hannah argued, laughing to lighten the directness of the words. "Have a nice night doctor." She waved again and close the locker room door behind her. As she stepped in, the door clicked shut and the lights went out. A hand slid over her mouth and she jabbed her elbow back into a soft stomach.

"Dammit, you have hard elbows," a voice grunted as footsteps retreated quickly.

Hannah squinted her eyes trying to see in the dark room. There was a glimmer of light and a flash of red before her hands were bound. "Who's there?"

"You don't recognize me? I'm hurt." One of the light flickered in and Hannah rolled her eyes when she saw Hijack standing across the room from her. "Hey, you're a nurse, you'll make me feel better right?"

"You're disgusting," Hannah snapped. She tugged gently at the zip tie around her hands, just for show. They'd be easy to snap apart but it needed to look...natural. She glanced around the room for something to hook them on the slice through. "What do you want?"

"A guy can't visit his favorite nurse?" He sat comfortably in one of the chairs, stretching his legs out ahead of them and crossing them at the ankles. "Eyes on me," he snapped quickly after noticing her scanning the room.

"I could just scream."

"Don't."

"Or what?"

"Look," he began, straightening up in his seat before continuing , "I just want to ask a few questions and then I'll go. It in your best interest to answer quickly."

"Or what?" Hannah repeated much more slowly.

"Surely there's someone you love out there who might be alone right now," Hijack wondered aloud. His heart was pounding in his chest like it could break through any second. The look in her eyes nearly made him fear for his life. Her hands were clenched so tightly he was half convinced she'd be able to snap her bindings then and there.

"Talk, fast," she snapped.

"Are you friends with a cape?" He asked.

"It's a little hard to be friends with someone who hides their identity don't you think?" Hannah took a seat on the floor leaning against the lockers. If she could just get her phone, she could text Jake and get him to run. He's be home by now watching some late night talk show. She hated them but he loved the gritty news stories. She'd seen him get so wrapped up in them he completely tuned out the world around him.

He wouldn't hear anyone in the room.

He was alone.

"You didn't answer my question," Hijack pointed out. He glanced down at his watch and then the door.

"Expecting someone?" Hannah took advantage of him looking away to slip a hand into her pocket.

"Your phone isn't going to work, signal blocker." Hijack held up a small black disc between two fingers. "And you still haven't answered my question."

The silence between them deepened, the only sounds coming from people passing outside the door. Somebody would have to come in sooner or later. Hannah heard there nearing footsteps and started to move into a crouch to stand. There was a quick glow of purple under the door and the footsteps quickly departed.

"Knightmare. So you brought a friend," Hannah sighed and fell back against the lockers again.

"We're talking about your friends not mine, remember?" Hijack stood from his seat to move closer to him. "But...now the question is, how'd you know it was him?"

"Thought we were talking about my friends," Hannah mumbled, her voice trembling as her breath hitched. Her face had paled as he got closer.

"Are you friends with a cape?" he asked again much slower.

"No." She kept her eyes on the place she assumed his would be under the mask but it was her eyes he was watching. The tips of her ears had flushed a dark pink amidst the strands of copper. A spattering of red splotches had spread across her cheeks as well.

Hijack sighed and stood again, pulling her along. "You should choose your friends more carefully," he scolded gently.

"You did not just tell me to choose my friends more carefully," Hannah snorted. She wobbled on her feet a bit and he steadied her. "You're the villain. Me good, you bad." She pointed between them using both of her bound hands.

"Am I really all that bad?" Hijack walked her to the back of the room as far from the door as he could.

"Gee, let me think..." Hannah trailed off and rolled her eyes.

"At least I'm not lying about who I do and don't know," he shot back. "Aren't you putting peoples lives in danger by doing that?"

"Well how about you take off your mask and I report you, then I'll be safe," Hannah retorted. She started counting down in her head, trying to figure out exactly how long she'd have between him leaving and her calling for backup. But...if she called then he'd definitely know she was in the loop on who was who. Priority one was getting Jake safe and accounted for, and then she could deal with Hijack and Knightmare.

"I don't think so nurse, not unless you'd like to share a few secrets of your own." He tucked her into one one of the nearby bathrooms and stood in the doorway. "Last chance."

"I'll pass," she simpered.

Hijack shrugged and shut the door, wedging a chair under the handle on the other side. He heard her jiggle the handle from the other side. "Stay safe nurse!" He called and ran from the room.

"Ready to go?" Knightmare asked. He'd been waiting leaning against the wall by the door. His sword was half sheathed at his side glowing faintly. It had projected a thin purple bubble around him that people seemed to be instinctively avoiding without actually looking at him.

"Ready." Hijack continued right on down the hallway with Knightmare at his side. Once they were outside they ducked around into an alley and Hijack grabbed him to fly them off a few blocks down. They landed softly beside Jake's car and jumped inside before pulling their masks free.

"So, did she talk?" Warren asked as he reached into the back for his bag of clothes.

"Yeah...she didn't say much but she definitely knows something," Jake muttered. He tossed his mask into the back seat and smacked his hand against the steering wheel. "I don't like this. I feel like I'm just attacking her for no reason."

"It's not no reason, Jake," Warren shoved his jacket into his bag and pulled on an oversized orange sweater. Jake eyed the large black cat printed across the front but didn't say anything. "If she knows who they are it's one step closer to taking them all down, exposing who they are and making them play by the rules."

"But is it even worth it if I lose her because of this?" Jake waited for a lull in the passing traffic to pull out of their hiding place.

"At least she'll be safe," Warren pointed out. "And Lorelei-"

"Don't!" Jake swerved suddenly, his face going pale and sweat beading his forehead. "Please, don't bring her up right now."

"It's tomorrow isn't it?" Warren glanced at him and slowly released his death grip on his seat. Jake only nodded in response. "Sorry, I completely forgot."

"It's alright," Jake sighed. His phone went off and he balanced it on his shoulder as he answered. "Hey Hannah."

"Hey! You're okay right?" He gripped the steering wheel hearing the panic in her voice.

"Yeah, just headed home," he glanced at Warren as he answered. "Had to pick something up from the office."

"Good, good," she mumbled. "Well I'll be home soon."

"Do you want me to come get you?" Jake pulled over outside a bus station and let Warren hop out.

"Aw, my hero," Hannah gushed. "That would be great. I'll meet you out front."
