The night was cold, the winter was blowing its winds, seeping into the bones of a young man with an unhappy disposition.

He trained for numerous years to be a knight. He was a squire under a cruel and filthy one (which is uncalled for and just downright outrageous) and he suffered quite a lot. Today was supposed to be the day when he will finally become a knight but...the heavens are not in his favor.

He's already a young man, nineteen summers old to be exact but he wasn't accepted to be a knight since his nativity was celebrated in deep winter, hence he wasn't twenty. Twenty was the age in their country where the squires move on to being a knight.

It wasn't square that he wasn't accepted to be a knight since his birthday was on Christmas day and the council decided that he was 'too young' go be a knight so they made him a squire, again.

Now, he had to find this man named Erwin Smith to be his squire.

He was treading over the cold snow and his fur boots sunk below the white snow with every step he took. He was freezing and his cheeks were tinted red.

It was early January hence, winter was still at its rule.

Levi cursed, scolding himself for not bringing a horse in this kind of weather. He was shivering and his fingers shook.

Looming over him was a castle and he walked quickly to it, hoping it was the right one.

He squinted as he read the snowy plaque on the door that was decorated with curlicues that proclaimed who owned the place.

He hugged himself as he read it. It was Smith. Delighted, he placed his gloved hand on the huge wooden door and knocked.

"Who goes there?" A voice echoed from the towers above.

"Levi Ackerman!" The small young man replied. "I am the squire sent for Sir Smith!"

"Very well."

A series of creaks were heard and chains rattled and the huge wooden door opened, landing to the stone street with a loud thud.

Before Levi walked in, he proclaimed his gratitude to the men who opened the door for him.

He went in and fled towards the main door of the manor as he heard the chains rattling again and the door thudding into a shut.

His fingers then held the ring attached to the door and banged it on the acacia board for a couple of times.

He waited for a few seconds but it seemed like eons. He was getting to cold and he will most likely, die from freezing.

Luckily, the door swung open, revealing a fine maiden in a dress full of laces of white and black. She had glittering, deep blue eyes and her black hair was tied into a ponytail with a red ribbon. The ribbon too was styled to resemble a bow.

"Welcome." The lady ushered Levi. "Please come in. It's too chilly outside for a human to stay." She smiled too and her beauty was astonishing, it made Levi gawk at her for a while.

"T-Thank you." Levi stuttered as he rushed in, half-frozen.

"With pleasure." The female chimed.

The manor was warm and toasty that it made Levi want to sit down and sleep but he knew better.

In front of him, Levi could see a fireplace loaded with chunks of wood that burned as the fire licked it. Before the fireplace was a chair...no, a Bergère embroidered with numerous fleurs-de-lis. Levi figured that the fancy chair was tailored for the said Sir Smith.

"Sir," The female steward said with her soft voice. "You're squire has arrived."

"Oh?" A deep voice answered from the Bergère and a creak was heard as Smith rose which made Levi wonder how heavy he was.

He blinked as a figure was now present before him. It was a man with brilliant blue eyes, he had blonde hair and he held a knightly stature that made Levi respect him instantly.

But unfortunately, he was taller than Levi. Hell, every man that Levi met was taller than he was.

Erwin Smith smiled before Levi, his new squire.

"Greetings. I am Erwin Smith. You may call me Erwin when we are inside the manor but please do call me Sir in the presence of other knights and the nobility. May I have your name, young man?" Erwin beamed again, his eyes closed in a amicable manner.

Levi was silent for a moment, thinking about what he should say. "Pleasure to be under you, Erwin. I am Levi Ackerman."

"Nice to be your acquaintance, Levi." Answered the taller man. He turned to his maid servant and said, "Rika, please take Levi to his quarters. I am sure that he is tired and cold so please do take care of him well."

The maiden obliged then nodded and told Levi to follow her.

Levi followed as he observed the household of his new knight. It was decent than the ones he used to stay. To be honest, decent wasn't the right word. It was grandiose. Carpets covered every inch of the mahogany floor and Levi was a little bit delighted to reside in this home for a while even if he was made squire again.

His room was at the second floor of the house so they had to take the staircase. Before they went, Rika took a candelabra lighted with several candles and led Levi to the elevation of steps.

At the end of the hall, was his room. A room specially provided for a squire like him which made him feel loved since the knight he previously worked under only gave him a servant's quarter, a filthy one.

"I pray that this huge windows won't frighten you in the slightest, Levi." Rika said as she folded her hands together before her.

"It does not so please be at ease, Miss Rika." Levi replied as he sat on the bed. It was fluffy.

Rika smiled. "I'm glad you like it. Master Smith wanted this room for you since it had the best views. At summer, you can see the fields of lavenders. Well, it's always there but it's beautiful. Enjoy your time with us here, Levi." She bowed and added, "Good night and have a nice rest. I shall go to my own quarters now."

Levi nodded as Rika opened the door, went out and closed it again.

Levi sunk to his bed. He was grateful that the room had it's own fireplace. His toes were warm with the fire and he could feel his eyelids getting heavy but before he slipped off to sleep, he took off his coat and boots and settled them to a far corner of his room. He gazed at the window, which were humungous pieces of glass held together with frames of thin metal. He could not see outside quite clearly since it was nighttime but it did not bother him in the slightest.

He loved it.
