Eight
The camp of the squires was bustling with life and noise. It was unpleasant for Levi since he was used to Erwin's manor that was surrounded with seclusion and peaceful, boisterous silence.
Boys in their attires ran around the camp while some just sat on the grass, pointing on sparrows that flew by the skies. Some were not doing anything at all.
All of the boys, the squires, wore a uniform, a thing that Erwin did not provide for Levi but the black haired boy did not mind. He spent years wearing the same clothing and he did not like it in any way yet he obliged to it because there was nothing else he could wear during his training.
The sun was up, ruling the skies in triumph over the moon although the sun was aware that the moon would beat him at sunset. Winds whistled through them and played with their hair, ruffling it. The wind also cooled their senses and sometimes, it does too much that some would shake in the breath of the cold wind.
Over the crowd was a petite lady with blonde hair and blue eyes, her lips curved into a frown. Surely, she did not like her job of watching over the squires. It used to be her older sister's work but ever since she passed away, the work was handed down to Historia since no other child from the Reiss family were able to do so since they were murdered.
Surely, it is unusual for a princess to have such work but the Kingdom of Eldia have different codes and laws, making their empire unique to the others that were established.
Erwin descended from his stallion, sliding from it. His shoes made a thud on the ground. He had his usual smile on his face, the smile that Levi always fancied. His posture, the ideal posture of the knight was magnificent and Levi was sure that several of the squires gawked at the blonde man.
Levi could recognize a few familiar faces. It was the faces of the ones that he and Mikasa met when they were meeting the King and were sent to the gardens since Erwin and King Uri had to talk about a certain topic in private.
He recognized the small blonde boy, Anthony, the one who was a braggart to Levi. Levi gritted his teeth upon seeing Anthony. He feels like the boy was a natural threat to him.
Erwin walked to the center of the dense crowd of young boys, beaming and greeting them. He shook hands with some and as Levi watched Erwin, he concluded that Erwin was the most perfect knight out there.
Levi followed Erwin but he stopped walking when he felt a tug on his shirt. He turned and saw that it was Mikasa.
"Please do not leave without me." Mikasa whispered under her breath which made it hard for Levi to decipher what she had said since the place was loud with talking.
Levi shrugged. "Just keep yourself close. Do not fall back."
Mikasa nodded as he turned to continue his walk to Erwin. His steps seemed rhythmic and it was as if he did not want himself to make his image look imperfect in front of the younger squires. He stood as rigid as he could and tried his best to radiate as much pride as he could although it sounded laughable.
It was going to be hell for Levi. He did not like the fact that he was back at a place full of squires. It did not amuse him even for a little bit.
Sneezes could be heard among the crowd of boys, complaining that the blossoms brought by spring made their allergies get the best of them, tickling this nostrils and caused their lungs to wheeze.
The closer Levi got to the center of the camp, he could see some knights, bulked up in their armor and covered up with their knightly capes.
Erwin greeted every knight he saw and shook their hands and as usual, he smiled.
As Levi observed him closely, he thought that maybe there's something that can take that superficial smile off that man's face. He began to wonder that maybe, he was the one who could do that but at the same moment, he did not want Erwin to be harmed by any means.
In the center of the gallant knights was the princess, Historia. She had her arms crossed over the other and she had a disgusted and frustrated mien. She dressed in a fancy, frilly dress which seemed to be uncalled for since she was sitting on a log which served as a chair for the upset young lady. To top it all off, the princess was at an event where it was all nothing but grassland and yet, she was wearing a dress which was fit to be worn at a ball.
Erwin knelt in front of the princess, the future Queen. Historia regarded him with her blue and cold eyes as she outstretched her hand to him so that he can kiss it with respect. As Erwin pressed his soft lips upon Historia's ethereal hand, Levi felt a small spark of jealousy that burned his calm.
Everyone seemed to be silent as Erwin's lips lingered on the princess's hand in respect. Everyone was staring at the two of them as if it was a beautiful scene to see.
Lies, the men were only jealous since Historia did not really like other men's lips brushing on her hand. Rumors had spread that Historia favored Erwin and the worst version of this story could offer, was that Historia wanted Erwin to be her King when she will be owning the Royal Throne.
After long and succint seconds of torture, Erwin finally removed his lips from her hand, stood and then regarded her with a warm smile.
"Greetings, Your Majesty." Erwin greeted her as he bowed to show his respects to her again.
Historia smiled beautifully which knocked the breath out of the lungs of several squires and knights. "Greetings, Sir." It was as if Erwin lifted her bad mood from her. She smiled and everything was automatically sunnier. It happened just like witchcraft. "How was your day so far?"
Hearing her voice filled the ears of young men with pleasure. It was the first time they heard her speak that day for the entire of the time before Erwin and his company arrived, she was upset and frowned at everybody else.
The worst thing she did was to step on Floch with her pointy, heeled sandals since Floch disrespected her by saying that her hair was similar to a block of cheese and this statement enraged the princess from head to toe.
"I feel splendid!" Erwin exclaimed with joy. "How about you, my Princess?"
The countenance of the princess shaped and molded into a face of disgust. She pulled her hand away from Erwin. "I envy you. I dislike, no, I loathe this work I have." She grumbled as she flipped her hair. "Watching over blithering idiots that call themselves squires? Just not my favorite thing to do."
That was it. Her bad mood was put up again and this seemed to make Erwin a little unhappy but he brushed it off his mind.
"Oh." Was all Erwin could say. He stood up, praying that his height would not intimidate the sensitive lady. "Well, is there anything else that bothers you? Would you like to talk about it?" He asked as politely as he could.
The princess scoffed. "Really?" She said as she picked her fan from the side of her 'chair'. "At a place like this? Get real, Erwin." She snapped her fan open and began to fan herself. It did not really make any sense why she did so since it wasn't that hot.
Erwin backed away slowly. "Alright, as you wish, Your Majesty."
From a distance, Levi could see Historia to be bossy. He stood there, watching her with contempt.
He felt a light nudge and looked up. It was Erwin.
"What?"
"Please greet Her Highness politely." He stated and Levi turned to Historia who was regarding him with cold eyes and Levi swore in his mind that her blond and beautiful lashes could serve as daggers that can stab people. She might as well murder him if he were to mess up.
Levi just nodded and stepped closer to Historia. He knelt, reluctant if he should kiss her hand.
Historia stretch out her smooth hand for him to kiss. Levi was sweating in hesitation and anticipation but a thought crossed his mind that made him feel instantly better.
The hand that Historia outstretched to him was the same hand that Erwin kissed. He thought that if he would kiss her hand, he would, well, at least indirectly kiss Erwin's lips. The thought gave him the urge to kiss and suck the princess's hand desperately but he did not want to be sent at the gallows for his actions so he behaved himself and kissed her hand softly and briefly.
And that was it.
"Erwin?" Historia asked the knight as Levi rose to his feet. "Is he your squire?"
"Aye." Erwin replied and the princess nodded in consideration.
"He reminds me of someone I know. Well, perchance they are related." She mused, folding her fan.
"Perhaps."
As they conversed, Levi was silent. He appeared to be listening but actually, he was celebrating that he kissed Erwin's lips indirectly.
He is indeed a strange child.
