May#5 The 26th of February
Heyyy Candies,
How are y'all doing?...hope you're not stressed out, remember to have a lot of rest.
We've got one life, so yeahh...rest, have fun and eat candy.
I'm so sorry for putting this review up late tho...been stressed out and busy lately...
My next review is on "The 26th of February" by Nithya2023
What do I have to say about this book?...
Well I have a lot...I mean a lot to say about this superb book. I'm reviewing it under the following headings.
Plot development:
I totally love the plot of this book, it's so amazing like on an exaggerated level. I was super excited to start reading this book, that I was totally carried away with the progression of events. I commend your skills and imagination, and I love the fact that you try to make your work easily comprehendible to your readers. I love the back story of the characters, I find it cool that you made Alayah the one. The story progressed at its own pace...it wasn't fast or slow paced. Although I read the first 10 chapters, I'm still really excited to see what the ending has for me as a reader.
I totally support this book, and think that books like this should be 💯 supported.
I wasn't confused about the plot, because it was simple and it isn't a cliche. Like this book is totally epic, and I love the title so much. It fits the book perfectly, because that day is an important day in the book.
I also commend your descriptions. Though you didn't really describe all the surroundings, but those you described, you did so perfectly.
I love the way you described the 90's, it kind of gave me this vibe.
You did well to evoke my mental, auditory and tactile senses. You portrayed the use of imagery perfectly.
You didn't describe all the surroundings in the book, like Alayah and Davian's room. You also didn't really describe some of the characters. It would be really great if you described the characters in details, not only their eye colour. Because I noticed that you just told us their eye colors, you didn't really tell us the color of their hair, if they had thin or plump lips, how their hair fits perfectly with their face.
As a reader, I just thought of random people.
I must also commend your choice of words. I eulogize your diction in this book. Though English is not your first language, you still managed to pull off a really amazing book. Your choice of words were simple and really easy to understand.
To sum it up, the plot is amazing, and with what I've read so far, I confidently say you're moving in the right direction. It's a 8/10.
Character development:
I love each and everyone of your characters. Though like I earlier said, you didn't really describe each character, but I commend your efforts nonetheless.
When I started reading, I noticed that you just told us the colour of Alayah's eyes...I made a mental note to talk about it under this heading. But when I got to chapter 10, I was astonished at your manner of description. I was literally taken by surprise.
You described her so well that, I immediately had a mental image of her.
Each character fits their personalities. I like Anne, she somehow reminds me of my mum😂...I think Lucas is cool, Davian is also nice.
I was pretty sad to find out that Jenna's father lost both his legs in the accident. I also felt sad that her mother died.
I actually think it's ironic and funny that Carlton fell in love with Jenna.
I commend your prologue tho, the poem is really good and also goes a long way in adding flavor to the book. The way you actually described Carlton and Jenna's relationship is intriguing.
I must also suggest that you don't really make Alayah fall in love with Davian easily. Make her play hard to get, and also have romantic experiences with other characters like Harold or Zack.
Nonetheless, the characters are good and really unique and I can't wait to read the rest...it's a 8/10
Book cover:
The cover fits the book perfectly and is really beautiful.
I love the way everything blends together in the background, considering it's a sort of history romance book.
I would love to know your cover artist. It's a 9/10
Grammatical erorrs:
I must commend your efforts at putting such a wonderful book together, considering the fact that English is not your first language.
I noticed few grammatical erorrs tho, such as; spacing between words, punctuations and so on.
You actually did well with your punctuations tho, but there were some areas you didn't use them.
You also used punctuations in some areas where they were not meant to be.
But nonetheless, your grammar is good and I encourage you to keep it up cause that's what makes us better writers.
The corrections to errors are in bold, and additional explanation given in brackets. If you have issues or doubts anywhere, don't hesitate to draw my attention to it. I'm readily available to clarify doubts. Here we go.
Prologue:
We all know the feeling, it's something unexplainable.
(take note of the punctuation, there's meant to be a comma)
But that's not what I mean, I'm coming up with something else. (Punctuation)
Chapter 1:
Every other dorm's room door in the aisle remains closed and the air is filled with silence.
He gets to the door and slowly turns the steel door's handle carefully.
Still as quiet as a mouse. (You omitted "as")
But it all quickly fades away, as he hears some faint voices emerging from behind him. (This fits better)
He hears a few footsteps from behind him, and sees slight reflections from torches. ("torch light" is grammatically wrong, although most people say it. It means the same thing, either you say torch or light, but not both. Also, please take note of the punctuation and the words in bold)
He knows he can easily pin them down with his strength, but that may result in more lethal consequences. (A comma would fit much better after "strength")
He's just a typical 24-year old adult that's running back to his hometown from college. (Please note the sentence in bold...I feel it fits better)
Time flies by, and he hears the loud blaring of a train from far off.
Chapter 2:
It was a fine-10 hour journey, but Davian spent the better part of his ride asleep anyway. (Punctuation)
One of them named Harold spots him right off (There's no need for a comma in this sentence)
Zack says from the other end of the wall, while taking his cigarette (there's meant to be a comma after "wall")
Finally the door opens, revealing two beautiful dark eyes (note the position of my punctuation)
After all, why should he be tensed when Alayah's not the person he was afraid of? (not "tense")
She throws his bag on the floor and goes closer to him to remove his dirty boots
She asks him with their eyes fixed on the white ceiling. (Please take note of the sentence in bold...I feel it's much more easier to comprehend.
There's absolutely no need for "ahead" after "fixed")
She looks at him while tilting her head, as she tries to balance herself on her forearm. (Take note of the sentence in bold and punctuation...it fits better)
You should tell him, before the authorities at your medical school... (there's meant to be a comma after "him")
Before Alayah gets to answer, they hear a slight knock at the door (better than "doorway")
Alayah descends from the bed and heads for the door, while Davian sits straight with his palms resting on either side of him. (Please take note of the sentence in bold, it fits better).
Alayah opens the door, unveiling Anne's gentle face. (Spacing between the words in bold)
If you ever happen to ask her a question about whom she'll choose between Alayah and Davian
He says as he rises from her warm bed (it's in Alayah's room...so it's "her" bed)
He rolls his eyes and leaves the bed, following Alayah to the dinning table(take note of the punctuation and "following")
Lucas throws numerous questions at Davian (not "over")
Do you have any idea how much I had to spend to get you into that medical school?
She strolls out of her room while moving to the rhythm, and heads for the front door (punctuation and words in bold)
Chapter 3:
So, I was thinking about giving you private classes in person after college.
After college was the only time she lived in peace, now look what happened. (There's no need for a comma after "college")
Chapter 4:
And the large buildings are burning with fire (not "on")
Chapter 5:
Jennifer says, as she tries her best to run faster than she possibly could.
She takes a seat behind the desk and rests her head in between her hands, as her elbows lay on the hardwood table.
(Please take note of the words and phrases in bold...take note of the sentence and also the comma after "hands")
She has to perform a lot of investigation for her new article
She finally reaches her home that held a built-in storage facility with solid wooden doors, including bookshelves, linen cupboards...(there's no need for a comma after "facility" and please note it's "wooden" not "wood in".
I guess that was a typo😂)
She had five, with the exception of one that went missing a couple of months ago. (The relative pronoun "who" is not used for animals...it's only used for humans when they perform an action. "That" can be used for both humans and animals)
The first things that welcome her are her fuzzy cats.
She said, as she stoops down to pet her cat that was rubbing itself on her legs.
(Punctuation and words in bold)
Oh, hello to you too, Charlie. (Punctuation and "too" not "to")
Every young woman has a handsome prince, who would come riding on a horse to meet her and make her his. But I'm afraid my prince doesn't even exist. (This is much more easier to comprehend...take note of the sentence/phrase in bold, it fits better and also note the position of the comma)
It was as if he was inside the dream, standing by Jennifer's side (you misspelled "Jennifer" to "Jeniffer". There's also meant to be a comma after "dream")
In the name of Jennifer, she appeared so familiar to him.
Chapter 6:
Nobody is seen, so she decides to sneak in without a sound. (Note the punctuation and "is seen" fits better)
She has a limited time of thirteen days (this fits better)
Chapter 7:
She reaches for the pillow Davian was sleeping with and wraps her arm around it, as if it were a fluffy teddy bear.
(Take note of the words in bold and punctuation. Also note that when there is "as if it/he/she/they" or "as though"...the verb that follows it is always in the past tense. For example, It's grammatically wrong to say "as if he was my brother"...rather you say "as if he were my brother"
They pull onto the road and Davian drives her to the clothing store, where Alayah wanted him to go (punctuation)
"Neither have I". Alayah says
The flowers and plants planted at the front complement the beauty of the building ("at" not "on")
"Oh, you've been having unusual nightmares for three successive days right?" (This fits better)
Which ends with him waking up all sweaty and panting as if he ran a marathon for days.
Imagine a man as handsome as Davian afraid of nightmares. (No need for "who's")
If you're wondering, I'm Dr.Stevens. I'm going to be your talk therapist for today.
"Oh, I see. What makes it strange?"
And since when did these dreams start ruining your sleep.
At the recess of the centennial annum, your fate pronounced for you shall perish. (No need for "is" before "pronounced"...it wouldn't make sense)
Davian mutters and heads for the door. (No need for "out" before "for")
Chapter 8:
Alayah says as she walks out of the store with two plastic bags in both hands.
I'd love to have a baby brother (not "I")
Muffled voices are heard as Jennifer tries her best to open her tired eyes
Chapter 9:
Why do squirrels like you? (There's no need for a comma after "squirrels" )
Just as she was about to leave, she hears a loud horn behind her following the noise of a vehicle tire moving on the ground.
She knows she must likely look like a black howler.
He asks and she does, while Nick does his best to open the car door. (Take note of the punctuation)
Chapter 10:
Davian casually replies with his eyes fixed on his phone.
Davian ignores him as he leans on his bike, waiting for his date, Althea (note the punctuation after "Date")
All he could think of is Jennifer and all the emotions he has towards her
