May#3 The Archway

Hey Candies,
How are you guys, your health, school, work and life?
My next review is going to be on "The Archway" by awesometales . Honestly this book is lit and I literally commend your efforts. I'm going to be reviewing this book under the following headings.

Plot development:
The storyline is good, it is amazing. Though you've published just three chapters, you've been able to incite fear, suspense and anxiety in your readers. I commend your diction. You really know how to blend words to accurately communicate your ideas. Your choice of words are simple and pretty easy to comprehend...as a reader, I was able to visualize the actions and reactions of the characters and story. Though I must say that you didn't really give acute descriptions of the setting and some characters. I get that it's a horror/thriller book and more focus is given to the actions and thrill, but it would still be very cool if you give descriptions of the characters and settings for us readers to be able to have an accurate mental picture.

Example, you didn't describe the facial/bodily appearance of Asha. As a reader I could just imagine a random teenage girl, but it would still be helpful to give us a hint of how she looks...like if she has thin or plump lips, black or brown hair, hazel irises like her mother or...you know what I'm trying to say. You also didn't describe her father. Description of characters is actually vital to a very large extent.

I also noticed that you didn't describe some surroundings. Example is Asha's room. You were like she opened her eyes and saw herself in a room. Initially, as a reader who's already hooked, I was agitated to know if it was her room or something, but it wasn't mentioned. You just stated that she opened her eyes, felt the pain in her leg and left the room. It would be helpful to readers if you describe the room...you can be like;

"She slowly opened her eyes, trying to remember the previous day's experience. She looked around confused. "How did she get here? What happened at the Archway? Where is she?" She slowly muttered trying to comprehend the situation.

It took a minute before she slowly recognised the familiar room. This is her room. She recognises the familiar scent, the (state a color) painting of the ceilings, the (state a color) of the walls, the blue curtains embroidered with gold.
She sat up...(continue from here)"

The example above is just a hint of how I feel, you can at least to some extent describe her room.
Apart from that, the plot is good and I can see the story having a good potential. Can't wait for more updates. It's a 8/10

Character development:
The characters are good and really cool.
I like Asha and her mother sounds like a really cool person. I would also like to suggest that her parents should at least to some extent, play a cool/vital role in the story through emotional and moral support. They can just carry out the activities of a cool family like supper together, movie time etc. It shouldn't revolve around only Asha...this book actually reminds me of "Amelia...Would you rather?" by Blood_doctor. That story is absolutely amazing, and this book totally gives me the same vibes as it.
You can check out the book tho, cause it's the same genre as yours.

You can add color to the book, by making Asha go to school...maybe she meets someone that actually had the same experience as she, and together they try to decipher the mystery of the archway. She still very much feels devastated by her friend's death. Maybe her late friends go to the same school as she and a memorial is organised. Then maybe she gets another message...like the same way she got the first message in her room.
😂But oh well...I have a pretty crazy imagination, but you know best and it's your book so I would really love to see how you have the story originally planned out.
I've already said the rest in plot development, so it's a 8/10.

Book cover:
The book cover is really good and it really says a lot about the book. When you talked about the archway in the first chapter, I imagined the scenario in the book cover. So the book cover is amazing and goes a long way in aiding understanding. It's a 10/10.

Grammatical erorrs:
You're a really brilliant writer. Your punctuations are absolutely on point, and like because you're so good, I had to scan thoroughly to at find errors. You're really good with commas and I can't help but ask..."you are/were the best in English class?" Cause you're absolutely good.
The errors I noticed are minor and there's still room for improvement, cause that's what makes us better writers.
The corrections to errors are in bold and additional explanation given in brackets. If you have issues with anything, don't hesitate to bring my attention to it and I'll be glad to clarify your doubts.
Here it goes.

The dare:

But like a typical teenager, she paid no heed to sense. (Take note of the punctuation...no need for a comma after "but")

And so blocking out her friends' laughter, Asha took a deep breath to calm herself. (Take note of where the comma is placed...no need for a comma after "and so")

So calling her friend's names that would probably make angels cry, she dashed forward, her eyes shut so tight it was doubtful they would ever open again. (Take note of the position of the commas...that's only where it's needed)

But to her surprise, nothing happened! (No need for a comma after "but")

But for some reason, her feet were rooted to the ground. (Punctuation)

Who was the person that had given her the scar. ("That" fits better than "who").

As she neared the field, Asha slowed her steps, taking a moment to compose herself. (I feel the words in bold would be a better expression)

But nothing could have possibly prepared her for the shock which was in front of her. (This definitely fits better)

Guilt:

Knew that this was not a nightmare, that it was real and she was tangled up in the middle of it. (Not "he")

The word felt foreign on her tongue, but it was true. (Punctuation)

She walked over to the washroom, getting a look at her nightmarish face. (Those words in bold were omitted)

Confession:

Suddenly she felt a burning pain in her leg, which almost made her stumble but she tried her best to manage due to the sheer weight of her experiences.
(This expression in bold is more easier to comprehend)

General Review:
This book is absolutely amazing and I recommend this to horror/thriller/mystery lovers.
Please make updates soon cause I'm really anxious...
Overall rating: 8.5/10
