My legs swung back and forth as I waited for the twins. They had left the classroom to help with their club's display and told me to wait here. My wait was interrupted though.
"(L/n)...I'm sorry to bother you but, would you mind spending the day with me? As a... date? Maybe?" One of the upperclassmen asked me. He was shy. His fingers twiddled together in nervousness.
My hands shuffled in my bag and I pulled out a hard strawberry candy. "I'm sorry, I'm supposed to be hanging out with my friends today. If you catch me at a better time I would've agreed." I said. The boys around me snapped their heads in my direction. This was the first 'almost yes' they have ever heard of coming out from me. They eyed the situation to study.
"Oh...I understand! Maybe another day then?" The boy asked hopefully.
"(Y/n)!" A voice called to me. Before I answered, my attention was diverted to my only distraction.
"Oh, Amane! I was wondering where you were." I gleamed at the boy approaching me. My stomach had butterflies. The other boys around me examined how I spoke with him. They knew I was fond of him. Not knowing I liked him exactly, but they envied the boy. They just didn't do anything about it because of Tsukasa. I placed a hand on the boy in front of me and used my free hand to give him the strawberry candy. "Maybe," I spoke.
Amane looked slightly confused at our exchange. But paid no mind to it when I started to walk away from the boy and towards where he was. "Sorry for the wait." Amane scratched the back of his head and looked down shyly. "Someone stopped me on the way here."
"What happened?" I asked curiously. We started walking into the school building to our first activity.
"A girl confessed to me," Amane spoke. I halted in my place and my heart dropped.
"O-oh?" My eyes looked to the floor. I was too upset to look him in the eyes. "What did you say?" I asked him. That's a normal question to ask about confessions, right? I don't want to seem bothered.
"Hmm." Amane hummed. He placed his hands behind his head and gave me a closed eye grin. "I said that I liked someone else."
My foot stumbled forward in astonishment. "Wh-what? This was your first confession, right? Why would you say no?" I asked. I regretted it as soon as it came out of my mouth.
"My, curious are we?" He teased me. I looked away from the piercing eyes and continued walking. "It's because I would have a chance with the girl I like being single, other than being taken."
"You don't even know if she likes you. And your risking being with another girl for the sake of this one?" I asked as we kept walking.
"That's...hard to explain." He chuckled. My heart fluttered and I started to play with my hands. "Why would I date someone I don't like? You reject guys all the time. You say you like someone too, yet no one knows who it is."
My face flushed at the boy's comment. "Because it's confidential."
Amane laughed and bumped into my shoulder like this morning. "I wasn't asking. I was pointing it out."
Before we knew it, we had arrived at the haunted houses. The whole corner of the floor was covered in spooky decorations. "Wow, they tried really hard. Which ones should we do first? Wait, shouldn't we wait for Tsukasa?" I asked him.
"He said he would join us when the play starts. We have two hours to get through all of these haunted houses." Amane grabbed my hand and started to trudge through the crowd.
"There's like 10 of them..."
Throughout the whole house. I gripped onto Amane's arm and hid my eyes in his shoulder. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh," I mumbled. I was not a big fan of scary stuff.
Amane laughed at my trembling figure, but every once in a while he would jump from freight himself. Then he would laugh it off.
Amane lead us to our meeting point with Tsukasa afterwords. The boys around us glaring at Amane because his hand held on tight to mine. I didn't realize I was still holding onto him after we exited the last house.
"What's it like being a club captain?" I asked him. My free hand rustled into my bag and I pulled out two strawberry candies handing one to the boy beside me. "I'm not in a club myself but I was just wondering." I took plopped the candy in my mouth and hummed in delight.
"Being captain? It's like being a teacher." He smiled. "I know the most about astronomy in our club. So I teach it to the other students there."
I could only hum in response. My eyes could not draw away from his. They were just so pretty. So perfect... Though he didn't know I was staring, he was too busy looking at the clouds in the sky. Either that or he knew and decided to say nothing.
Little did I know it was the later.
"Amane!" I heard in the distance. It was obvious who it was. No one really calls out his name like Tsukasa. With such excitement. It's like they haven't seen each other for years when they reunite after one hour of separation.
"Tsukasa! Did you and Yashiro finish?" The boy beside me asked. Tsukasa nodded violently at his brother's question and flashed me a toothy smile.
"What did you do?" I planted my legs on the ground and stretched from sitting for a while.
"I-I um. Hung up some decorations! It was kinda last minute and It was a one-person job so I sent Amane to wait with you." Tsukasa twisted his right leg and held his hands behind his back. He answered as if he was lying. But I didn't want to peg him for hiding something.
Amane smiled and nodded in agreement or even acceptance to what his brother was telling me. I eyed the two suspiciously before a cry reached my ears. My mother instincts kicked in even though I was only 15 years old. That never had stopped a woman before. My head whipped to the direction of the cry.
A small girl held onto the arm of her teddy bear tightly as she wept. No adult was present near her. I mean, her parents could be anywhere. This is a school festival after all. The twins watched me as I left them to go to the small girl.
"Hello," I said approaching her. I bent down to her level and smiled. "What's your name?"
"Hina." She managed to say between tears. She attempted to wipe them but they kept on flowing.
"Hi, Hina! My name is (L/n)." I told her. I reached into my bag and rummaged around for every child's favorite thing. She couldn't help but look. "Want some candy?" I asked her. I held out candy stick, grape-flavored. She looked me over before finally determining I was safe to talk to. Hina nodded slowly and I handed her the stick. Amane stepped forward and looked at the girl curiously.
"Where are your parents Hina?" He asked. She looked between Amane and me and wiped away the rest of her tears and snot.
"I dunno. I was holding mommy's hand and then I accidentally let go." Hina sniffled. And then started to lick away at her candy stick. I exchanged glances with the twins before Amane asked another question.
"Do you know anyone who goes to this school?" Amane bent down to our level and smiled at the small girl. I couldn't help but stare. Is he good with kids? It seems like it...
"Oh, Yes!" She beamed. "Akane Aoi."
I always got confused between Akane Aoi and Aoi Akane. "Is it the pretty girl with the purple hair? Or the oranged hair boy with glasses?" I asked. Amane laughed at my question. Though, he was confused himself.
"Purple hair!" she yelled excitedly. I smiled at her and grabbed my phone. I stepped to the side to call the girl and the twins stayed behind to talk to her. About space probably.
"Hello?" she answered,
"Aoi? Do you know a Hina perhaps?" I asked her. My hand found its way onto my hip as I watched Amane pointing towards the sky with the biggest smile on his face. I knew it. Of course, he's talking about space.
"Yes. She's my cousin." I could hear the question in her voice as she spoke. "Is there something wrong?"
"Well, Hina got lost and said that she knew you. So I thought that I should probably give you a call." I smiled.
"Oh my! I'll come right away!" she practically screamed into her phone. I heard a lot of shuffling on the other side. "Where are you?" Soon, Hina was in Aoi's arms. She thanked us quickly before scurrying off to find her parents.
"I guess we're ready to go to the play now then? It starts in thirty minutes and I want good seats." Tsukasa said, stretching.
I nodded in agreement and held onto Amane's hand tightly. He was taken aback by the sudden action. "Thank you for helping." I beamed. That moment, the wind blew my hair back. Amane's eyes widened when he noticed the moon earrings that graced my ears. He looked down shyly knowing they were either for him or his brother.
"Yeah... No problem."
