Chapter 4

Zeke's POV

"Dibs on the red truck!" Shauna screams as we arrive at the storage unit. She quickly grabs the keys from under the tyres; where they always are, and hops into the driver's seat. I nod my head in approval and go to join her in the passenger's seat only to receive a foot to the chest as she kicks me out. "What makes you think that you are riding with me?" She questions as I try to catch my breath.

"You're my girlfriend." I splutter as if it's obvious.

"I don't need no back-seat driver in my truck, besides... no offence or anything but you always jinx the luck of whoever's driving. So sorry Zeke but find another car." She finishes and leans across to slam the door in my face. "Lynn! Jump in!" She shouts out the window.

"How is that fair?!" I retort as I watch Lynn climb in through the cabin and slide into what should have been my seat.

"It's not." Lynn shrugs and answers my questioning. "But it works in my favour so, meet y'all at the tracks suckers!" She hangs out the window as Shauna drives away.

"Four! I'm riding with you." I state and hop into his spare seat.

"No you're not." He says in 'instructor voice' before trying to shove me out the door.

"Why?" I wine as he starts the engine. "We always go together! Please! Please, please, please, please, please?!"

"Fine." He growls and pulls out of the storage unit. "But no talking and it's your loss." He finishes all creepy like.

In total we took three cars; one for Shauna and Lynn, another for Four and I, and a third for Will, Christina, Uriah, Marlene, Al and Peter.

It takes about twenty minutes to arrive at our usual track; an old field that is no longer used due to a water drought a few years ago. We arrive first and I climb out the truck and watch as the others arrive.

Shauna pulls up and Lynn is hanging out the window whilst shouting absurd insults mixed into pep talks. Then the third vehicle arrives... Uriah is driving and in the passenger seat is Marlene. Christina, Will, Al and Peter are all sat on the flatbed, singing along to the stereo.

"You ready for me to beat your sorry asses... again." Shauna smirks and walks over to Four and I.

"You won't win." Four scoffs and leans out the window.

"I'm sorry... how many times have you ever won against me?" She clicks her tongue and tilts her head.

"Never." Four sighs and hangs his head in defeat. "But I'm not one for sticking to tradition so this time, you're going down." He smirks and starts the engine.

Both Shauna and I return to our designated vehicles so that the race can start. The trucks line up at the north end of the field and prepare to start. Christina stands between them and explains the rules, which everyone already knows but it's tradition. "First truck to the fence and back wins! If you crash then you lose and are possibly dead. On three..." She explains as Shauna and Four share a casual death glare. "One. Two. Three!"

The car jerks forward as Four takes off down the dirt track. I can see that Lynn is still hanging out the window and shouting through the wind at us. "Be prepared to lose Pansycakes!" She screams and flicks me off. Oh, now it's on.

I continue to watch out the windows as their truck passes ours slightly. "Four hurry up! We can't loose again!" I holler and bang on the dashboard. His eyebrows furrow together as the car speeds up. He is only looking one way and that is straight ahead. "Hurry up!" I scream again as he accelerates. We eventually pass the girls truck and he is only getting faster. As the fence nears the car is still accelerating. "Okay now slow down or you wont turn." I instruct but he doesn't comply. "Slow down!" I bellow but he ignores. The fence grows closer and closer and he doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon. "Are you trying to kill us!? Slow down Four!" He continues to ignore so I do the only logical thing... I throw my door open and roll out. Thankfully with all the practice of jumping off moving trains, I am able to do this without murdering myself... if only the same could be said for Four.

Less than three seconds after I evacuated the moving vehicle it smashes into the fence. The bonnet is all crumpled and the little paint that was remaining is now removed but the truck still works fine. I watch as Four spins the wheel and turns around, ready to make his way back to the starting line.

Shauna and Lynn arrive at the fence but unlike Four, they turn before making contact and swiftly drive away. I am now forced to walk all the way back by myself.

Tris' POV

Marcus returned a few hours after he last left. "Have you calmed down and realised that I am just trying to help you yet?" He ever so sweetly asks as he enters the tiny room which I am being held prisoner in. I bite my tongue in an effort to hold back whatever sly remark that is currently brewing there. "I got you a present, Beatrice. I noticed that these small grazes you seemed to have picked up have a slight chance of scaring so I stopped by Erudite earlier and found this ointment. They claim it works miracles on injuries so I thought you could give it a try." He proceeds to chuck me a small vile of green liquid, accompanied by a soft, cotton cloth.

I am wary at first so merely apply a few drops to one of the gashes on my arms. The felling is tingly and cooling and nothing bad about it so I proceed to apply it everywhere else that has been struck with the leather belt. "Better?" He asks and walks over to inspect me. I simply nod and meet his glare with my own. His face confuses me... everything about him reads 'pity' but his eyes say 'hatred'.

Everywhere that I applied the green liquid feels slightly numb but it is a good type of numb because it drowns out the pain.

"Wash off all that blood." He instructs and hands me a large bowl filled with warm water and another cloth. The water turns pink as the blood mixes with it; this is expected. But what I don't expect is for the cuts to have healed and now only faint outlines of bruises replace them. "It really does work miracles." Marcus chuckles as he watches me. "Do you want to know something?" He asks and slouches back in the chair. Before I can reply, he is already talking again. "A certain somebody named Caleb Prior, developed that treatment." He grins at the name, I on the other hand wince, knowing that he killed my brother. "At least he was somewhat helpful..." He gets up to leave without saying another word on the matter.

"By the way Beatrice... You can leave tomorrow morning, take the boy with you if you don't mind though." He pops his head round the door and smirks as his exit concludes.

Tobias' POV

I flatten the airbag down  before getting out the truck. Everyone stands with their mouths open, including Shauna. "I win." I announce whilst spinning the keys on my index finger. "Guess what that means Shauna... you lost." I smirk whilst prodding her nose.

"But you also crashed doofus." She retorts and snatches the keys off me. "Which meant that you forfeit and therefore I won." She prods my nose just like I did hers.

"Are you crazy?! Were you trying to kill me?!" Zeke splutters as he comes running up to the rest of the group.

"I never wanted you in the car in the first place." Is all I say before reclaiming my keys. "It's getting dark... Are we all crashing at your place tonight Zeke?" I ask and hop back into the crumpled truck. He lets out a frustrated grunt before nodding and joining me.

The whole ride back to the storage unit we blasted the stereo and Zeke sang along like a lunatic to Temporary Bliss by The Cab. 'I can't help it, I'm addicted. But I can't stand the pain inflicted. In the morning, you're not holding, on to me.' Zeke mouths along to the words and adds in over the top, dramatic actions. "I'm your one and only, only when you're lonely!" He screams and clings on to my arm.

"You're no fun." He grumbles and slouches back in his seat. "Why won't you sing along with me?" He ends by punching me in the arm.

"Because I don't want to be sent to an insane asylum." I reply and return his punch.

I am about to pull into the storage unit when I notice a figure standing in the doorway. His silhouette looks familiar... No, it couldn't be... Marcus? I slam on the brakes and jump out.The figure starts to talk. "Tobias! How good it is to see you here." He snarls. Before another word leaves his mouth, I pull my fist back and let it fly at his face, only it never makes contact. Zeke is holding on to my arm preventing me from completely smothering my father.

"What the hell Four? He isn't worth it." Zeke says and draws my attention back to him. It is only now that out of the corner of my eye I see the familiar black band hang on a silver chain around Marcus' neck...

Tris' ring.

"Oh, he is so worth it." I mumble and let my other fist fly at Marcus' head. "What did you do to Tris?!" I bellow and tower over the crumpled man on the floor. "Why do you have her ring?! What have you done with her?!"

"'Four'... What a God awful name you have chosen to go by. Tobias, you know just as well as I that she is dead. I even signed her death certificate myself, you know being in charge and all that jazz." Marcus says and slowly rises up from where he lay.

"Why do you have her ring?" I question again, this time demanding an answer.

"When she died, all her stuff became government property, you know since she has no family. I found this and took quite a liking so decided to keep it for myself." He explains and messes with the engagement ring he wears as a pendant. "If you... 'tied the knot' earlier then you would have been entitled to it but sadly our dear Beatrice was still a Prior when she died so unfortunately I can do nothing about that." He says as a smile tugs on his lips.

"How do you know we were engaged?"

"She had the ring on her left hand and last I checked, Miss Prior was... How do the youth put it these days? ...dating you. Why else would her family have been the targets?" My jaw drops and I am unable to breathe. "You thought I just had a problem with the Priors? Ha! No dear boy, the Priors are a lovely family that unfortunately got tied up in my plot to ruin your fun... I must say, it has been quite enjoyable to watch your little melt down over the past few days."
