Chapter 22

Tobias' POV

They haven't let me see her since we spoke to Max... I mean, I've seen her, but we aren't in the same room. A thin piece of one way glass is all that separates us.

I watch as she throws her restrained body continuously against the padded walls of her cell.

I can hear her faint screams as she cries out in whatever emotional state she is currently trapped in.

She shouldn't be locked up this way...

Her head snaps towards the mirror that I'm stood behind and she charges at it. The pale sin of her cheek drags down it and I feel a sob start to form in my throat. Seeing her this way is killing me.

I keep having to correct the nurses that walk in and out of the room as they refer to her as 'crazy' but I'm just fooling myself. No 'sane' person charges round a padded cell and lobs their body, full force at the wall and laughs as they crumple to they floor.

She's crazy.

My Tris is crazy.

There's no point in sugar coating it because then you'd be just as insane.

We've been in the hospital for two days now... Two days that I haven't left the observation room. Two days that I've sat and watched her try to destroy herself.

"Hey, Four?" Christina's voice fills the silent room.

She wasn't charged with Will's murder, thankfully Max decided that it was Marcus' doings and not hers so she is free to return to normal life. Unfortunately the same can not be said for Tris...

"Hi," my throat is unbelievably scratchy since it's been so underused in the last 24 hours.

"How's she doing?" Chris is the first person that's came to see Tris apart from myself so far. When we got back, they were told to return home since they hadn't picked up many injuries.

"She's-" Tears silence me though and of what I've been trying to hold in comes flooding out.

My body shakes as sobs continue to overwhelm me. It feels like hours before her delicate hands rest on my shoulders and help to cease the shakiness.

"Is it bad that I wish she was dead?" I croak out and lock eyes with the tanned girl that's stood before me.

Her eyebrows furrow as she lets out a sigh.

"I can't stand seeing her like this, Christina," I say and sink back down, against the wall. "I'd rather she be dead than going through that right now." Chris still stays silent. "I only just got her back and now I'm gonna lose her again, all because of my father.

"It's like she's leaving me again but this time, I have to watch as she ever so slowly fades away.

"I don't want her to have to go through that, Chris." On the last words, she crouches down eye level with me.

"Listen to me, Four. I felt the exact same way when Will chose Candor and look where that got him. Hmm? His body is in a crematorium whilst his urn's being engraved, do you really want Tris to end up that way, knowing that once the decision is made, there's no going back. You can't bring ashes back to life, Four, but you can save someone that's still breathing." Her eyes look deadly serious as she stares into my soul. "Tris can handle this, I know she can. Hell! She's the only one of us that probably ever could." She rises up from the floor and goes to sit on one of the incredibly uncomfortable plastic chairs that are facing the window into Tris' cell.

A soft package makes contact my my chest and I look down to see a plastic wrapped slice of Dauntless cake. "Eat," Christina orders, "you look hungry."

You know its officially gone from bad to worse when not even cake can make even the slightest smile appear at my lips.

Soft echoes fill the room as Tris slams her shoulder into the glass that separates us whilst Christina and I watch in silence.

I see a single tear roll down her cheek as she stares at the deranged girl before her. This isn't my Tris anymore.

She continues to pound against the glass until a blue mist fills the room and she flops clumsily to the floor as her arms are restrained and she can't brace for the impact.

Various people in their sterile white robes enter her cell and place her tiny body onto the small cot that sits in the corner. They remove the restraining jacket and secure her hands to the bed with fabric cuffs before hooking her up to various machines.

"Hey!" I bellow and rise out of my seat. "Hey!" I repeat again and pound my fist against my side of the glass. "What are you doing to her?!"

One of the nurses looks my way but doesn't show any sign of an explanation.

I just have to watch... Watch and figure out what they're doing all on my own.

"Four, look," Christina whispers as if this room wasn't soundproof. Her index figure gestures to a male nurse that's preparing a syringe - a serum.

"Hey!" My protests begin once more. "What serum?!" I beg and continue to pound at the glass as Chris joins in with me.

The same nurse from before turns around but this time he continues to stare at the glass. He's clearly the youngest of them all and his eyes look youthfull.

"What serum?!" I demand once more, knowing full well that he probably can't hear me, but he does - or I assuem he does because his right hand slowly rises before tapping his temple twice.

"Memory," I breathe out, unsure of how I feel about this revelation.

The nurse's movements don't stop there though, he lowers his hand and pull off the blue sterile mask that is covering most of his face to reveal a familiar smirk...

"Uriah?"

"Da fuck?" Christina sounds just as confused as I feel.
