Chapter 2
Tris' POV
My face feels like it's on fire from where the belt made contact with the skin. Somehow he manages to hit the exact same spot every time. It will probably leave a gigantic bruise.
I am startled from my thoughts when Eric's corpse flops to the floor with a loud thud. His body lays crumpled on the floor in a heap of limbs. If only Marcus would close his eyes then I could convince myself that he is sleeping instead of dead, but his glassy eyes stare blankly at you.
"I'm back!" Marcus's voice echoes through the room as the door swings open. I manage to get a glimpse at what is behind him and see the familiar concrete of the Dauntless compound corridors. At least I now know where I am. "Did you miss me?"
"No." I scoff and slouch as much as possible in the uncomfortable chair that both my waist and legs are tied to.
"Honestly Beatrice... what am I going to do with you?" He ponders and strokes his chin. "You used to be such a nice, little girl. I bet it's my son's influence that has made you so wretched." Did he seriously just go there? Yep, he did. "Oh well, we can fix this little issue." He finishes and brings the belt back down on my face. "This is for your own good." He says and repeatedly brings the leather down harder and harder.
I can take it at first. Sit silently as the torture progresses. Only let out a few winces. That is until it becomes too much. The belt makes contact so hard that it rips the skin and thick, hot blood runs down the entire left side of my face. "Stop! Please, please stop!" I beg and try my hardest to fight back tears.
"No." He snarls and continues until I eventually black out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I awake with my jaw throbbing and lead on my side. The chair must have toppled over at some point because I am led with my left side down. Beneath me is a large pool of blood. I tilt my head to look and see if Marcus is still here but all I get is a glance at Eric who is positioned back in his chair. Why does Marcus insist on using him like a doll? He does not even have the decency to leave him to be at rest.
I feel the chair get yanked and I am now sat upright again. "Good, you're awake." Marcus says and walks round to the front of me. "Let's continue." He says and pulls his elbow back, ready to let the belt fly at my face once again.
Tobias' POV
I sit between Zeke and Lynn whilst I stare blankly and try to ignore everyone around me. The only reason I came is because I didn't want Zeke to destroy another memory of Tris.
Everyone just talks for a while until Zeke clears the commotion and signals the start of the game. "Four, Candor or Dauntless?" He practically shouts in my ear. Why does he have to pick me? Can't he see I clearly don't want to be here?
"Candor." I grunt not being bothered to do anything.
"What is your real name?" He says and prods my arm.
"You all already know it from when I threw the knives at Tris." I grumble and cross my arms defensively over my chest.
"Then there is no reason for you to not say it now then." Zeke insists and his eyebrows rise half an inch up his forehead in frustration.
"Fine it's Tobias. Tobias! T-O-B-I-A-S! And if you ever call me by it or tell anyone then I will snap your necks." There are they happy now?
"Chill all he wanted to know was what it was, not how to spell it." Shauna says and looks at me like I am
crazy.
I let out a deep breath before choosing who to ask. "Christina, Candor or Dauntless?"
"Dauntless?" She replies hesitantly.
"Give me your phone." I say and she carefully hands it over. I scroll through all her answer phone messages until I find one from Tris and forward it to myself. "Thanks." I throw the phone back and get up to leave.
"Wait, what did you do?" She asks just as I am about to reach the door.
"Zeke deleted my last answer phone from Tris so I forwarded one of yours to my phone." I sigh and continue to leave.
"I don't think that was a good idea..." She trails off before walking up to me.
"It's a recording of her voice! Tell me what is so wrong with that?" I bellow and she takes a few steps back.
"The last time that Tris left a message was when she called upset about the boxers dare, I don't want you to hear it in case it makes you worse." She says and grabs my phone from my pocket.
"Christina." I whine and try to snatch it back. "Please, I just need to hear her voice." I am almost begging and I fell the tears building up.
The look she gives me is full of anger and pity. "Fine." Yes! "But if this makes you worse then I told you so." She snaps before handing the phone back.
"Thank you." I whisper and leave.
I am fed up of seeing the same walls so I decide to wander round the compound until I find some old storage rooms. The lighting is dimmer than usual since most of the bulbs are blown and many of the doors are rotting or broken. I walk to the end of a dead end corridor before sliding down against the wall and sit to listen to the message.
It starts and I can hear the wind, she must have called when she was on the train. 'Chrissy, I don't know what to do... Four, he just jumps to the wrong conclusions all the time. I feel like going back and saying that I did cheat on him because then at least he would have a reason for being angry, instead he just assumes the worst of me..." Christina was right, I can't bear to listen to the end of the message. No wonder she hated me... I would hate myself too if someone made me feel like that.
I stay exactly where I am and sob silently to myself. "I'm so sorry Tris." I repeat over and over again to myself.
"Stop! Stop! No, no! Please stop!" I hear the faint screams of a girl come from one of the doors. "Please, stop!" The screaming continues. I listen to it for what seems like ages until one final high pitched wail makes me sprint towards the source.
I charge through countless hallways trying to find the girl but the screaming slowly dies down and turns into sobs. Doors fly off their hinges as I storm through corridor after corridor searching for the girl.
I finally open the correct door and see her...
I see my Tris.
Tris.
