Arrival of the Monarch

Like the chrysalis

latched onto a brick wall

soiled by human orifices,

we emerge from our cocoons.

With a flap of our wings, we flee

from this concrete, paved world,

in fear of inanition, desperately

searching the cracks

for sprouts to feed upon.

From North to South,

And back again,

or from East to West,

we migrate to where

the real meadows are.

We flutter over long distances,

finding new homes, meeting mates

to lay down a foundation

for the next generation to follow,

and the cycle starts again.

From emerging from our cocoons,

everything we have become is

forever ingrained upon us.

And with our short lives,

hopeful for the next destination,

we flap our wings

and await the storm.
