Chapter 14- Understanding each other (The Bad Guy- Ultimate Storytime)

As Roman sat leaning against the wall, he heard a knock on the door.

"GO AWAY LOGAN!!!" He yelled, his voice cracking from the few tears running down his cheek.

"It's just me. No need to yell" A voice called from the other side, a voice Roman recognised as being Virgil's.

"Even better" Roman muttered sarcastically before yelling "GO AWAY!!!"

"Nope" Virgil smirked as he swung the door open and gently shut it behind him. As soon as he saw the tear stains on Roman's face, his face immediately dropped and he frowned. Roman turned around, avoiding eye contact.

"I said go away" Roman mumbled as Virgil knelt next to him and placed his hand on his shoulder in an attempt to reassure him. However, Roman just brushed it off.

"Look Princey, we may not have gotten along in the past but we're friends now, right? And I want to help you. I can tell you're upset"

"Yeah no duh" Roman mumbled.

"Logan didn't mean what he said you know. He was just a bit stressed out that's all"

"That doesn't mean it didn't still hurt. I thought that he loved me but then he just treats me like that"

"At least you actually have a boyfriend" Virgil muttered under his breath.

"What was that?" Roman asked.

"Nothing"

"Wait a second" Roman stood to his feet, wiping all of his remaining tears away and a smile, or more like a smirk creeping onto his face. "You have a crush don't you?"

"N-no" Virgil stuttered, mentally scolding himself for doing so.

"Who is it?" Roman asked curiously.

"Look, it doesn't matter okay. He'll never love me back anyway"

"It's Patton isn't it" Roman worked out, bringing a light pink blush to Virgil's face.

"Maybe..."

"OMG I ship it!" Roman squealed like a teenage girl, jumping up and down.

"Oh shut up" Virgil pulled the strings of his hoodie and buried himself in his hood.

"Okay, now I HAVE to set you two up"

"Please don't. And please don't tell Patton, or anyone else"

"Fineeeeee" Roman whined. "I won't tell anyone. But I am definitely gonna get you two together. Now, is everyone ready to go on our quest to save Jessie and Patton?"

"Uh yeah I think so"

"Let's go then" he grabbed Virgil's arm and dragged him towards the other room, swinging the door open. "Guys, we're ready" He was beaming from ear to ear. Logan immediately ran up to him and wrapped his arms around him.

"Roman, I'm so sorry for what I said" Logan apologised.

"Lo, it's fine" Roman smiled, kissing him on the forehead.

"But I hurt you-"

"Shhhh. That doesn't matter anymore" Roman placed his finger on Logan's lips, quieting him. "I forgive you. I love you" And with that, he removed his finger and pulled Logan into a passionate kiss, which Logan quickly returned.

"If you guys have quite finished, can we get on with this quest or whatever?" Virgil asked bitterly, causing the pair to pull away, blushing.

"Right, did you guys bring any supplies or anything?" Maddie asked and the three shook their heads. "It's fine" She sighed. "I have an emergency backpack full of supplies for these types of situations" She ran over to the cupboard and pulled out a light orange backpack, matching her dress. Quickly pulling out a cloak from the backpack, wrapping it around herself and swinging her backpack onto her shoulders, she turned to the others, "Ready?" She asked.

"Yeah I think so" Virgil replied as he looked around at the other two sides.

"Let's go then"

Time skip

"Ugh I'm tired of walking" Roman complained. "Logan could you carry me? Pleeeaaase" He pleaded.

"Roman, I love you but you are a grown man. I'm pretty sure you can walk yourself" Logan told him in his usual monotone voice.

"Fineeeeee" Roman whined.

Suddenly, Maddie stopped, causing the three sides to almost walk into each other.

"Geez what was that for?" Virgil asked, slightly irritated.

"We're here" Maddie smiled but her smile then dropped at what she saw. They stood just at the edge of the tiniest village they had ever seen. Most of the houses were burnt to  crisp or had fallen to the ground. Only one house remained; a small, cosy cottage right in the middle of the village.

"I-it's all gone" Maddie gasped. "My home. Gone. Everything is gone" A few tears trickled down her cheek but she managed to wipe them away before anyone saw. Feeling pity for her, Virgil placed his hand on her shoulder.

"I know this must be hard for you but whoever did this, whoever destroyed your home, we will make them pay" he softly smiled at her, bringing a slight smile to her cheeks.

"Thanks Virgil"

"Um...you can call me Virge if you want" He rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"Thanks...Virge" She corrected herself.

"Is that the sorcerer's home" Virgil asked, pointing to the only remaining cottage.

"Yep that's it"

"I thought he was a powerful sorcerer. That doesn't look like a home of a powerful sorcerer to me. More like the home of a grandma" Roman commented, joining in on the conversation. After his stereotypical comment, Logan wacked his arm. "Ouch!"

"Well...looks can be deceiving" Maddie smiled. "But just to warn you guys, this guy can be a bit...stubborn" Maddie warned them.

"Well, we're ready" Roman smiled confidently.

"Well, I guess we should go then"

They all cautiously approached the house and Roman was the only one brave enough to knock on the door. They all heard shuffling from behind the door after Roman knocked before it slowly creaked open. All of their eyes widened as soon as they saw the sorcerer. Virgil even stumbled backwards in shock. The sorcerer was someone he knew oh too well. His yellow eye shimmered in the moonlight as well as his scales.

"Ugh what are you doing here snake face?" Roman asked, disgust lacing his voice.

"I could ask you the same thing" The sorcerer hissed.

"Deceit? Y-you're a s-sorcerer? Y-you have magic?" Virgil asked.

"Nooooo" Deceit said sarcastically.

"I had no idea you came here" Roman commented.

"Well that's because this is my safe place where I can finally be alone and be myself. Obviously I wouldn't tell you guys"

"Whatever" Roman rolled his eyes. "Do you think you can help us? We kinda have a big problem on our hands"

"Why would I?" Deceit sneered.

"Please Deceit. There's this curse that we need your help to reverse and Patton is in danger" Virgil explained. "And we have an old friend of yours with us" He gently pushed Maddie forward and she just awkwardly waved.

"H-hi" She stuttered.

"You" Deceit snarled. "You left me just like everyone else. You all left me. Deserted me. Isolated me. Made me a villain"

"That's because you are one" Roman sneered.

"Is that really what you think of me? So you can accept Virgil but not me? We're just like each other you know"

"I am nothing like you" Virgil hissed.

"Of course you are. You were a villain too, just like I am, but you never wanted to be, just like me. And yet you managed to turn "good". Why shouldn't I be the same?" He asked as his words began to fade into song.

"You think you do the right thing but indecently,
You find the whole world would prefer it differently.
You go from being fair to falling flat.
You see what's there,
You find you're at the wrong end of the stick.
And you're starting to feel sick of when the story drops you hard into the pavement.
Even though you thought you knew what "to behave meant"
But you find out you were thinking wrong.
And you wind up back where you belong.
And you try to get it right.
But instead it just comes back to bite you.
I never wanted to be the bad guy,
The Bad Guy,
The Bad Guy.
Never wanted to be the bad guy.
But that's just how the story goes" As he sang, Virgil began to understand where he was coming from. He had felt the exact same way for years.

"Guys, I understand where he's coming from" Virgil spoke up.

"You do?" Roman asked.

"Yeah, I really do" He looked at Deceit with a reassuring smile as he began to sing just like Deceit had.

"It's a trip discovering you're not the hero.
You thought you were Augustus but you're Nero.
And you're playing on your violin.
You might say it's just your evil twin.
But it's not something they hold.
No, it's you and you alone to blame.
I never wanted to be the bad guy,
The Bad Guy,
The Bad Guy.
Never wanted to be the bad guy.
But that's just how the story goes"

"And it goes, and goes, and goes just like balloons out of your hand" Deceit added.

"The world looks up while you sink in the sand"  Virgil added as he placed his hand on Deceit's shoulder and the two began to sing together.

"And you start to understand,
That it can't be erased if it's traced out in pen,
Though you scrub it again, and again, and again, and again.
I never wanted to be the bad guy.
But that's just how the story-
I never wanted to be the bad guy,
The Bad Guy,
The Bad Guy.
Never wanted to be the bad guy.
But that's just how the story goes.
I never wanted to be the bad guy"

"Thank you for understanding Virgil" Deceit smiled.

"Of course! I guess you are right after all. We are quite similar aren't we?" Virgil chuckled.

"Yeah, I guess so" Deceit smiled.

"So, will you help us?" Roman looked up at him hopefully.

"Definitely"
