Chapter 9
I was no longer allowed to go alone to see Dipper. Probably something about me almost letting him go in the court yard. But I just wanted him to be happy! Is that a crime?
Apparently it is.
I slump in the gift shop, leaning against the side of the vending machine. The shack was open for business but I was all shut down. Wendy went to visit Dipper for me and the Gruncles were having a conversation the cash register. Gruncle Stan was reclining in Wendy's usual chair and Ford was leaning casually against the wall behind. Every time they every started to argue I shot then a look, and then they went back to being happy. I couldn't deal with anything. I needed everyone to happy. All the time. I was done with sadness forever. I sigh and watch as a few families dodge the rain storm outside, no thunder but plenty of bad vibes bursting through the windy streets. Rain was that kind of weather that always just brought sadness with it. I loved rain, Dip and I used to splash through puddles. I had a yellow rain coat and his was neon green. He was going to get black but I advised against it, rain was already depressing so you should always get a bright raincoat.
Logic.
So today I wore a yellow sweater with a picture of a Jamaican orange on it saying "orange you happy man?" I modeled it after my stick. Came out pretty good, I guess. I turn and lean away from everyone and face the wall, my head resting on the side of the vending machine. I rattled the key chains and couldn't help by breathe in the sticky, misty air heavily.
Someone came un running, bursting through the door and panting heavily. I could hear the squeezing of their boots so I flip around to see Wendy. She skids to a stop at the cash register and shouts at Stan, "Guys we have a problem!"
"What is it!?" Gruncle Stan stands up abruptly.
"It's Dipper!" She coughs, hair sopping from the rain.
"What about him!?" I shout, matching over to her as I watch her cringe.
"I didn't know you were here!" She confesses, obviously wishing I wasn't.
"What about Dipper!?" I slam my hand on he table, tears threatening to break out of my eyes.
"He's uh..." She hisses like she was about to inflict actual pain on me. "He's gone."
All the color drips out my my face. "He's dead!?"
"No!" Wendy's face bursts out red. "He's just... Missing."
"MISSING!?" I scream. "JUST MISSING!?"
"I know I know Mabel is bad-"
"BAD!?" I scream, tears flooding down my face. "BAD!?!? YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME DIPPER WAS 'MISSING'!? HE CAME BACK BLOODY AND BEATEN UP AND WHATEVER HAPPENED DROVE HIM INSANE!!"
"Mabel honey calm down we'll find him." Gruncle Ford reassures.
Calm down Mabel calm down- "NO I WANT CALM DOWN! MY BROTHER COUKD BE DEAD OR NEARLY THEIR ANS THOSE STUPID DOCTORS LOST HIM!"
Wendy shifts uncomfortably and turns away a little.
"WHAT!?" I scream at her. "WHAT DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!?"
She opens her mouth, but couldn't seem to find the right words to say what happened.
My teeth grip. "Take me to the hospital now."
"What?" She gasps.
I grab her hand and begin to lead her out. "Take me. Now!" [An: in this universe Wendy has her license bc in Oregon the required age is 16]
She turns to the Gruncles for approval but I'm still yanking her arm out the door and into the car. I clip into the front seat, tears still streaming.
"Mabel I don't think-"
"Just go." I snap and she shifts the car into reverse and quickly backs out of her horrible parking job.
One awkward car ride later, I was back to the tainting automatic doors I had gone through so much in the past two weeks. I grit my teeth and slide in.
I match up to the desk, a familiar face smiling. "Hey Mabel-"
"I want to see my brother." I demand.
She looks shocked. "But your brother-"
"Fine." I grit my teeth. "I want to see his room."
"They have police officers already there, Mabel." She smiles, worried. "They can handle it."
"Please." I choke back more tears of frustration. "Just let me see! I want to help!"
The woman sighs and opens the door. "If they tell you to leave, leave."
I nod lying-ly and slide down the hall. It wasn't until I stopped at the very obscure corner that I noticed Wendy behind me.
"Mabel are you sure-?" She starts.
"No." I shake my head. "But i need to."
So I round the corner to see police tape and a bunch of officers, including Derlan and and Blubs.
I stroll up casually and force the tears to stream down my face as I approach them.
"Mabel!" Blubs says, shocked. "Why are... What are you doing here!?" He coughs awkwardly.
"I want to help." I continue to let the tears fall down my face, trying to convince them to let me look. "Please let me in."
"Mabel I'm not so sure-"
"Please!?" I beg, realizing how much I had interrupted people today.
He sighs and whips my eyes nicely. "Anything you find, you tell us, okay?"
I nod and weave my way through the tape and slide through the rest of the police officers.
One of them grabs my shoulder. "Woah kid. Glass."
He was right.
There was shattered glass everywhere.
And that wasn't even the worst part.
