This book is a spin-off prequel to Drowning Lessons, but they can be read in any order. It's also a dual-perspective story with lots of Spanish mixed in, but don't worry! Translations are provided here and within the text! Keep reading for more info.

Translations will be provided in text often, but some small words and phrases will be seen a lot as The Mezcla members switch between English and Spanish. Those common words and phrases are:

- Oye: Hey

- Güey: Dude, man

- No mames: No way (vulgar)

- Nada: Nothing

- Sí: Yes

- Claro: Of course

- Gringo/Gringa: American (the meaning can vary depending on who says it, but in Rigo's case, he means Americans)

- Güero/Güera: White Hispanic Person (can be used derogatorily, but is not in this book)

Don't worry about memorizing this list, though! These words are small and won't negatively impact your reading experience if you choose not to translate them.
