I tried to write your name in the rain
But the rain never came
So I made with the sun

Sasuke looked out of the window, sitting in his newly re-decorated office. Sai had done a good job. He always did.
The young man reached over to his drawer and pulled out the files he was looking for; an armament deal they were considering with the Mist. It was being looked over by his lawyers, but since he was a lawyer himself, he could deal with the terms and decide if they were favorable enough for him or not.
There was wind blowing outside his office and the trees swayed leisurely. Sasuke blinked at the imagery before focusing his attention back towards the pages.
An image of Daiki flashed in front of his face. The boy was crying for his mother most of the time he wasn't distracted and it distressed Sasuke to see him so. He knew he needed to face Hinata sooner than later and figure out what the fuck would happen next.
But almost a week later, he was still reeling from the shock of it all. The fact that almost 4 years of his life had been a lie-
Focus, he told himself, trying to read the document anew.
-would propose a trade agreement with Uchiha Weapons Company Ltd. of Konoha according to the bylaw 23C-
"What are you doing here?" someone interrupted and Sasuke looked up abruptly, reaching for his back pocket instinctively. The gun was cold against his fingers and he relaxed.
Sai stood there, dressed in black as usual. His dark thermal shirt clearly outlined his thin, toned body and the combat boots paired with the dark pants made Sai look more like the ex-ANBU he was than a member of the Uchiha crime syndicate.
"I should be asking you that," he countered, shutting the file for good, giving up on getting any work done.
"It's Sunday," Sai reminded him, the pale man coming in from the doorway to sit in the chair across Sasuke's desk.
"Exactly,"
"Well a second in command has no days off," the man told him.
"And a boss has even less of those," Sasuke replied.
Sai nodded. That was fair enough. Both of them had spent more weekends in the office building, going over matters both legal and illegal than they had ever spent going out and having fun as compared to people their age.
Sasuke didn't mind the silence. He relished it in fact. He took the file and set it back in its designated drawer. He decided that legal work would have to wait until tomorrow. Right now, he could go over the matters of the family he was head of with Sai.
"What are you going to do about your wife?" Sai asked out of nowhere, in his usual tone, as if asking about the weather.
Sasuke's neck snapped up. Sai was many things- a trusted comrade, a highly skilled fighter and former intelligence agent- but subtle wasn't one of them. It wasn't exactly going to be a secret to keep from his second in command that his dead wife was actually very much alive.
He just hadn't expected Sai to ask about it so bluntly.
"I don't see how that's any of your concern," he told Sai with a snap.
Sai nodded. "It's not. I'm just wondering if there's any damage control to be done,"
"I took care of it," he told him. "Who told you about this anyways?"
Sasuke hadn't spoken to any of his people since the day he came back from Suna with his precious cargo. He strongly suspected Shikamaru would have been the one to inform Sai in case of any trouble.
"I went by the house to report about the clubs downtown. Shikamaru was there with your son,"
Sasuke clenched his fist under the table. Sai continued further. "He informed me of the situation,"
"I assume you haven't spread the word," Sasuke said.
Sai rolled his eyes. "So far the only people who know Hinata Hyuga is alive are either at your house or in this room,"
That would include the 2 guards posted all time at Sasuke's residence.
"Ensure that it stays that way,"
Sai nodded. "You still need to deal with her. It's been almost a week,"
"Remain within your limits," Sasuke said, feeling that chilly calm seep into him as he straightened his posture and leaned back into the chair, crossing his legs. "Just do what you're told like a good lapdog,"
Sai remained emotionless.
"The Hyuga have been asking to set up a meeting with you," Sai said, continuing as if nothing had happened. "So unless you're planning to keep her locked in that room forever, you need to deal-,"
"Who knows," Sasuke said, growing bored of this conversation and standing. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his silver cigarillo. He opened it deliberately, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it with his silver lighter. The Uchiha crest was carved in its side. He took his time with the action.
Taking a puff, he looked at Sai again.
"If the Hyuga request another meeting, tell them to contact Mr. Uchiha's secretary- not you,"
"Understood boss,"
Sasuke walked around the desk and towards the exit. He was reminded in that instant of the cool aura his uncle had exuded whenever Sasuke had seen him deal with matters. He felt the same coldness inside him now.
"Sai?" he called as he reached the door of his office, not bothering to turn around.
"Yes boss?"
Sasuke smoked another puff of the cigarette before continuing. "Don't ever tell me what to do again,"
He didn't wait for an answer as he walked out of the room, his posture straight and precision in his step.
__________
The Uchiha crime syndicate had been passed down to Sasuke in his heritage. It used to be a strong, compact thing once, comprised of blood relatives and massive numbers.
By the time Sasuke became the head of the organization, almost everyone was gone. The battered, shell of the powerful family was left to him, haunted in name and in history. It was never meant for him, but he ended up its head anyways.
He had worked hard to live up to his family's legacy.
He had recruited members, loyal to him till their last breath. He had worked cleverly, dexterous in the means he took to acquire these life-long loyalties.
He had built establishments that would live up to the Uchiha name.
He had reinforced and strengthened their storefront business, expanding their legalized weapons trade instead of remaining as smugglers on the run from law.
As a boss, he was thriving.
As a person, he had never been lucky in terms of happiness and long-lasting fulfillment.
Sasuke thought about this while he drove back home. He wasn't a happy man. He had never thought of himself as a happy man, except for the brief period that he had been with Hinata- and look how that had turned out.
He was cold and unfeeling and he had mastered the art of detachment from everyone and everything to protect the remaining shred of sanity he had- which wasn't much admittedly. He was vicious and bitter and angry.
Sasuke knew he had no reason to care about how he was living before. But the existence of his son changed things.
The man didn't want his son to inherit this shell of an angry man as his father. He didn't want his son to remember him in a vague fog, like he did his own father. He didn't want his son to have a father that was so detached, so afraid to get hurt again that he never tried.
He loathed admitting it but Sai and Shikamaru were right.
He couldn't keep dragging out the encounter with Hinata. It was too draining.
He deserved to tell her exactly what she had put him through and he also deserved an explanation. That was why, summoning all his patience, he made his way towards the Uchiha compounds.
He had things to do.
