Chapter 10 You Are Unreal
Ember pressed his hand over a blue sensor on the door of his room.
"Who was he?" Arorhea asked, still looking at the lift. Ember took a deep breath "My brother,"
"So, you're twins," Rhea asked.
"Yeah, kind of"
"But you have totally different personalities! You're a playboy while he's a demon. It seems like you both don't get along," The door opened automatically and Ember walked in, "This is my world" Ember laughed.
He dodged the question. Rhea decided not to ask it again and looked around the room. It was completely furnished with white plywood and marble, with a wooden flooring resembling the colour of honey. It was well lit by one of the walls entirely made of glass, facing the city and all other white walls covered with paintings or photographs.
There was a single bed in a corner and an array of guitars in the other, with a canvas board relaxing at the center, pressed on a carpet of newspapers and paint and a small telescope near the glass wall. A huge closet was attached to one of the wall. And there was another opening just beside it that opened into a bathroom.
"I can even do this," Ember tapped on his phone and slowly, the white lights overhead turned blue and the floor lit up green, "Looks like a field doesn't it?"
"It's beautiful!" Rhea looked down through the glass wall.
"I don't usually have guests here. Do you mind sitting on the bed?" Ember asked.
"Not at all," Rhea slowly removed her shoes and got on the bed "What's this?" She jumped a bit, "It's super bouncy!" She laughed.
"That is the power of a sixteen inches thick mattress,"
"How is this room so cold? I can't see any air conditioners,"
"We've got a centralized air conditioning. There's an entire array of cold air in the ceiling above and the floor below,"
"That's so cool!" Rhea fell on the bed, "It's so soft and warm in this cold environment, I feel sleepy...I wish I could sleep in your bed every night," She said.
"I'd love it if you did," He blushed. I'm sure they weren't on the same page. But hey! Everyone has fantasies!
Rhea looked up at Ember while laying on the bed and he looked down at her while standing before the bed. He looked straight into her eyes. She blushed and looked away. He chuckled.
"Why don't you lay down too?" She suggested. He lay beside her, with his legs hanging down the bed since he was still wearing his shoes. He looked at her and she bit her lips and looked down. She looked at him again, "What?"
"I wonder...if people would fall in love if they hadn't heard of it before,"
Rhea looked at him. He smiled and looked at her as his blonde fringes slowly fell over his blue eyes, "Like..." He was almost whispering by then, as if he only wanted her to hear what he was saying. Or maybe his voice just got subdued since he was laying down,
"Imagine there was no ideal or overaccentuated image of love and romance painted in postmodern mass media...How would we love? Would it be purer? More authentic? Mom always said true love would save you. I wonder... what is a natural process of human feelings that result in true love and all the beautiful things...
Sunlight
Goodness
Stars
You,"
She looked at him. She touched his fingers with hers, "The way you say things to me," She smiled, "It makes me want to know anything you have to say about everything, really I... I think you have beautiful mind,"
He squeezed her hand and looked into her eyes, "Arorhea,"
She smiled, "Ember,"
"I'm so lucky to have met you...again,"
She blushed.
His phone started buzzing again. Ember left her hand and hung up the call. He looked down at the phone and then at Rhea, "They are calling me,"
"You should go then,"
"But I don't want to leave you,"
His phone buzzed again. He got up and fixed his hair, "I'll be right back," Ember left the room. As soon as he left his room, she got up and looked at the canvas.
'Ember,'
She picked the paintbrush with trembling fingers and dipped it into the yellow paint,
'I look at a sky full of stars,'
She dragged the paintbrush through the white, coarse board,
'And then I see you,
You are, I believe
An evening star
Shining brightest among all others,'
She was done painting, it was a guitar, mixing between blonde and brown.
She didn't know why she painted, but it was the first painting she made after ten years. She felt alive. But equally tired. She fell back into Ember's bed and rolled to the place where Ember was laying. Into his scent. She pressed her nose on the sheets.
"This scent" She mumbled "Now I remember it," She fell asleep while thinking about what the smell was. Slowly, it got stronger.
"Sweet autumn clematis," She breathed as Ember pressed his hand over her face. He leaned towards her face and brought his lips close to hers but then suddenly, he paused "Rhea, get up, Chuck is waiting for you, don't you wanna go home?"
He looked at her closed eyes. He smiled and brushed his blonde eyelashes on her nose bridge. She smiled as it tickled. He whispered on her lips, "If you don't get up within one second, I'm gonna do something very naughty to you,"
Rhea opened her eyes and he moved back. She picked up her bag and ran out of Ember's room towards the lift. Ember laughed and followed her. Rhea stood in a corner of the lift as they went down. Her heard was beating fast. She quickly tried to divert herself,
"Sorry, I came to your house today and all I did was sleep"
"It's alright. I couldn't keep your company for long either. My dad is just too clingy," Ember smiled. Why was his smile so sad, she wondered.
She looked at him,
"You must miss you mom very much, right Ember?"
He moved his eyes on her and she continued speaking, "I know you can never get over your mother's death. You must be hiding so much pain behind that smile–"
"Rhea" Ember interrupted, "If I tell you about my past, it's not because I want you to feel sorry for me but so that you can understand why I am who I am"
She looked down.
Ember smiled and pressed his hand over her hair, "It's alright, Arorhea. I'm glad you came,"
She looked down. No one should weird that kind of power with just their voice. They reached the ground floor, where Charles was waiting for them in the car. Rhea turned towards Ember,
"You're okay, right?" She asked.
"Oh, yes I am. I'm golden!" He laughed. She smiled and sat into the car. Chuck closed the door and got on his seat. Ember pressed his hands on the window. Rhea looked at him and waved at him with a smile. He waved back and they left.
"You're awfully close to that girl. What is her deal?" Zed stood behind him. A maid walked towards him and bowed, "Dinner is ready, sir,"
Ember passed by Zed, "You keep on testing my patience,"
"Of course, I'm in charge of you after all," Zed said.
"Only till I'm sixteen," Ember said and left the place.
Zed smiled and looked into his phone, "That much time will be enough,"
Ember walked into the dining hall and sat before Loraine and his father, "You've got quite a pest up my sleeve, haven't you, Mr Helberg?" Ember said as he picked up a spoon.
"If it's about Mr Zed, he is just there to ensure that you work, son," His father drunk his soup.
Ember smirked, "You're gonna regret that one," He began drinking his soup.
All servants surrounded them, arranging the dishes and refilling their water glasses.
"We wouldn't have to do it if you would take your responsibilities seriously," Loraine finished drinking his soup and kept the bowl aside. The empty bowl was immediately replaced with a cutlet and a wine glass.
Ember picked up his fork and knife, "Am I talking to you, Loraine? No, right? Then, I think these are general manners to not interrupt two people who are having a conversation,"
"Tal ikke sådan med din bror," Mr Helberg said.
"Whatever," Ember rolled his eyes.
Loraine shook his head and took a sip of his wine, "I don't understand the point of running after such paupers who can only take from us,"
"She gives me more than what she takes,"
Loraine smirked, "Is sex with her that good?"
"Oh yes, it is. Not everyone can be you, you know," Ember took a sip from his wine glass.
"What does that mean?" Loraine narrowed his green eyes.
"Asexuality," Ember smirked, "Why? Cuz you can't perform when you need to?"
Loraine got up and so did Ember, "I'm done eating,"
"So am I,"
"Good night, dad," Loraine wiped his hands with a towel and left the dining hall.
Ember followed him.
Mr Helberg just looked ahead and pressed his head, "These boys..."
Ember walked into his room and slammed the door. The lights turned on and the room lit up into a dull blue colour. He looked ahead and saw the colourful canvas. He walked towards the canvas board and pressed his fingers over the painting. He looked ahead, at a sky full of stars.
He walked towards the glass wall and sat before it, staring at the stars
"It's so unfair,
It's not fair that you get to be so beautiful
When everything is so ugly down here,"
