Chapter 5

One morning, a few days later, Luna was quite confused to find herself not in a bed, but on the floor. She could have sworn that only hours ago she had fallen asleep on a comfortable bed, not a hardwood floor. Shrugging it off, Luna stood and stretched-kicking something in the process.

The book-Romeo and Juliet-laid at her feet, opened to an odd page toward the middle of the story (no where near where she was).  But before she could inspect it, a knock echoed off the lilac coloured door. "Come in." She called, sitting at the foot of the bed.

Chris emerged from the other side of door, carrying a box. Not just any box, the one containing clothing for the girl. But Chris didn't set the box down, nor move farther into the room, instead he stood there just staring at her.

Luna frowned. "You alright?" She asked softly. No response. "Chris!" Luna tried again to gain his attention.

Chris shook his head, as if coming out of a trance. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" His voice faltering as he spoke.

"I asked if you were alright." Luna repeated. "You... um.. you were staring." She laughed, standing to take the box from him. Eager to wear something other than what Jace picked out.

"Yeah, sorry about that I must have spaced. Still tired, y'know?" He lied, joining her at the desk to dig through clothes.

Luna nodded although she had no clue what spaced meant, or why he was still tired when it past eight already, or most of all why he had lied. "Who did Jace say these belonged to?" She said, trying to change the subject.

"They belonged to a family member." Chris shrugged.

The blonde decided not to question further, so instead she simply went to take a shower.

While she was in the shower, a new item was added to Luna's long list of questionable things at the lake house: the water was freezing no matter how hot you turned it. Something she was positive shouldn't happen.

Quickly getting dressed and pulling her wet hair up, Luna navigated her way to the kitchen. Finding her way wasn't as hard as you'd think considering the two teenage boys talk pretty loudly at times-both of which stopped talking the instant she came into sight.

"Don't stop on account of me, boys." Luna said with a slight smile, crossing to where pancakes set cooling. "I mean you sounded amendment about something, Jace. Perhaps it had something to do with me killing you both?" The blonde looked over her shoulder shooting Jace a grin.

Luna felt normal again, whatever Mr. X had given her had worked its way out of her system completely, which meant the darker of the two boys could be in serious trouble.

Jace looked long and hard at her for a beat before smiling. "You can joke? Welp, I lost that bet." He laughed. "And you also have a sense of fashion. You're just full of surprises, aren't you?"

Luna laughed as well. A fashion sense? She'd just thrown clothes together. "You never know." She shrugged.

"But you could still be a murder." Jace pointed out, taking a sip of coffee afterwards.

"That I could." She agreed, hopping onto a stool by the island. "Or I could just be a fifteen-year-old girl." Luna cast a glance at the brunette sitting atop the island, wondering why he hadn't said a word. "What were you two discussing? Anything fun?" She questioned, hoping for an answer from Chris.

She didn't, however, get one because it was Jace who responded: "Oh you know, just video games." He said.

"You are a terrible liar, Jace." Luna shook her heads at how bad he was, a small laugh escaping her mouth.

"You know what's insane?" Chris spoke up for the first time, lifting his head to look at the others. "We're sitting here interacting like we've all known each other for years. Like we're kids enjoying the last bit of summer break by the lake." There's something in his voice that Luna can't quite detect. He sounded sad, confused, and upset all at once.

"In a way, we are." Jace said, seeming to have known the source of his friend's newfound state. "Just like we should be." Jace's eyes travel from the back of the room-where a dark hallway awaited him-to the brunette girl, before settling on Chris again.

Luna noticed something in his eyes as they found the hallway, fear. Was he afraid of the hall for some reason? Or maybe he didn't like the dark? She could understand if it was just the darkness, not being a big fan of it herself, but something told her it wasn't.

"Would you excuse us?" Jace grabbed Chris by the arm, yanking him off the island and out the door quicker than Luna could blink.

On the way to the sink, Luna caught sight of something left on the counter. Drawing closer, she realized it was a photograph of a girl.

The girl appeared to be not much older than her with long blonde hair, and a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. Something about her looked almost familiar.

The girl, herself, was seated at the end of a bed, facing the door. Her clothes were what struck Luna though, she wore a red t-shirt and a pair of overalls cut into shorts.

The exact outfit Luna had worn not even four hours ago.

Although that's not where the weirdness stopped, as Luna looked closer she noticed something startling; the room the girl sat in looked like the same one Luna had slept in, even the bed spread looked the same.

Shaking her head wildly, the blonde dropped the photo and took a step back; before snatching the photo back up.

She sprinted back to her room, shut the door, leaned against it, and held the photo up. Just like she had thought, the lines of the photo lined up with those of the room. Whoever this lady was she had been in here when that was taken.

Realizing the book (which previously laid on the floor) now sat closed on her bed , she gently laid the picture down, and went to pick it up-though as she lifted it, something slipped out.

Luna bent down to retrieve the item off the floor, curious to what could have fallen from an old book.

It was a bookmark of sorts; a single daisy pressed between two pieces of lament paper. The letters K.C., written in fancy handwriting, sat underneath the flower.

K.C? What was that suppose to mean?
