Chapter - 2 : His Family
He reaches home after bidding goodbye to his love. It's a three bedroom flat, along with a large hall and a kitchen. Both the rooms have separate balconies. He couldn't find his mother around. He calls for her and then realises where she could be. He made his way towards a room. It is smaller as compared with the other rooms. It was actually a gallery of memories. He stood at the door and watched his mother looking at his father's photograph. This room has several pictures of his father, and his parents. Before he could speak, his mother turned towards him.
"finally you're home!" she says with a smile.
He is astonished and then smiles at his mother.
" How do you know that it's me. Maine toh koi aawaz bhi nahi ki." he says.
She smiles. ... "I'm your mother, Vineet. And I know you better than you." she says patting his cheeks
"Yeah yeah! You know everything." Vineet says looking at his mother, who is now smiling.
"What were you talking about with dad? " He asks.
She smiles.... "do I need reasons?" She asks.
Vineet nods his head negatively...
"okay! But am hungry." he says kiddishly.
She smiles... "Go and freshen up. I'll warm up the food." she says.
He obeys his mother and leaves for his room. She locks the room and moves towards the kitchen.
She is Devika Clark, a Hindu by birth.
She runs a boutique here in New York and it is very well known. She settled here after the death of her husband, Daksh Clark, who was a Christian by religion. She holds a bitter past, due to which she doesn't want to go back to India. She also named her son on her husband's choice . The only joy in her life is her son, who is growing up to be the exact replica of his father. She is happy about it.
They settle for dinner and Vineet is elated to find his favorite dishes.
"Wow! When did you cook this." he asks.
"When you like it, I'll have to cook it for you, right. So i have to find time." Devika replies.
"Yeah! You do everything right." He says making her smile.
"okay! Now that your free, you're helping me in the boutique." She says.
He looks at her in awe.
"What will I do there?" he asks.
"You'll manage the clients. That's what your job is. I am not able to do. Plus our manager is asking for a leave." she replies.
Vineet make a face at which Devika glared at him.
"You are done with your semester, Vineet. And apart from doing something unimportant, it's better you help me." She says.
"Okay! But on one condition." he says.
"Condition? What do you want now?" She asks.
Vineet glances at his mother, he is unsure of her answer but he needs to say it anyway. His trance is broken by his mother's voice. He glances at her.
"Let's go to India." he says.
Devika looks at him in surprise and the expressions on her face change into painful one.
"No!" she mouths the word sternly.
"But why not? It's been 25 years. You never talk about India." he says.
"I said, we're not going to India. And you shouldn't think of going there either. Did you get that? " she shouts at her son.
Vineet is left shocked and before he could speak something, she left the room.
To Be Continued.
