Chapter 11: Flashback pt 2
GRANT CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS / WASHINGTON D.C. STREET
Sybil came into the building with fresh clothes and food for Huck someone she had been watching for a while but had Olivia get him to help.
"Okay, I have everything. Clothes, scissors, etc. the works." Sybil says with bags in both hands.
Fitz stared at her legs that were shiny with the lotion she put on and wondered how they would feel wrapped around him. She was everything he could ever ask for in a woman. Maybe he just like that she was smart, stubborn, wise for someone her age. He wondered how long he could stare at her before she could notice. He was brought back into the conversation when she gave Huck his food and put the bags on the table in front of him.
"This is the man who's gonna save my campaign?" Fitz asked.
"Governor, if they look like weapon, they're hard to keep secret." Olivia told him as Sybil access his hair. Her motherly part coming out to play as she wanted to fuss over his hair.
"You're late." Huck said as he bit into his burger.
"Blame this guy. Cyrus, give us a minute. Huck, are you ready to reenter the real world today?" Olivia asked Huck.
"Is he wearing pants?" Mellie questioned.
"No." Sybil says as she chose the outfit for him. Fitz's lips turned as he heard her comment.
"Paul Mosley. Literacy policy advisor for-" Huck started before Mellie cut him off.
"We all know who he is. He was advising me on literacy. But that's it. End of story. I would never-" Mellie told them.
"We know Mellie. Just listen" Sybil at the same time as Fitz.
"Honey, it's not necessary. We believe you."
Sybil and Fitz looked at each other before looking away as she busied herself with choosing a hairstyle for Huck.
"They were following you. Did you know that?" Huck wondered.
Sybil looks up from her chosen hairstyle, a buzzcut. Sybil sat down the magazine and crossed her legs.
"What?" Mellie whispered as she looked at Sybil.
"A guy like me, but, like, cleaner, has been following you for over seven months. Taking these photos, gathering evidence to use against you, just waiting for the chance." Huck said.
"Interesting. So, it's someone that has power, someone maybe against us." Sybil states as Olivia and Huck could see the gears turning in her head. Cyrus, Fitz and Mellie watched her before they noticed the smile that appeared on her face.
"Sally Langston. She's the only one that could have a vendetta with us." Sybil said.
"Are you saying that Sally is doing this?" Fitz asked Sybil.
"Well, not her but maybe someone that want her to win just as bad." Sybil responds before Olivia connect the dots.
"Billy." Olivia whispered.
"Never get your hands dirty when you can have someone do it for you." Sybil smiles as she leans back on the chair. They wondered just who this girl was as she leans back with her legs crossed and her head leaning back. Olivia wanted to smile at her cousin, she was slowly revealing her true self. After Huck was done eating, she went to help Huck clean up. His hair now shaven off into a buzzcut and wearing fresh clothes. Huck was now showing them all the photos and timing on the computer as they watched.
"How'd you get these?" Fitz asked.
"Anything digital, it's all just out there. Patterns of ones and zeros waiting to be gotten." Huck said as more photos pop up. Late meetings, day meetings.
" All these late-night meetings it doesn't look good." Cyrus watched while his hand on his forehead.
"And the story's picking up traction because Mosley's not denying it." Olivia stares at the screen.
"They must be paying him off." Cyrus pointed out.
"They most definitely are." Sybil agreed as she sat beside Huck as Fitz stood in the middle.
" I pulled up all his financials. His password is "literacy." Huck states.
"Could've found a better password." Sybil huffed at. Olivia gave her a look before they saw all his financials.
"What's he got? Swiss accounts? Cayman Islands?" Olivia asked him.
" Uh, just small amounts. Uh, tiny step productions. Here's another $4. 19." Huck pointed to the statement.
" Hardly damning. Keep looking." Cyrus waved off.
"There's more." Sybil says as Huck says.
"Well, small payments are interesting, too." Huck mentions.
"Why is that?" Fitz asked.
" Well, he's been getting quarterly payments from Tiny Step Productions. Tiny ones going back 30 years." Huck tells them.
"Look like this one was a favorite." Sybil told them before Olivia walked off to call Abby.
"You ready to try something new?" Olivia asked Abby.
"I was thinking of going savory, but what's up?" Abby states.
OUTSIDE GRANT CAMPAIGN BUS
Sybil watched Cyrus and his lover James argue outside the bus. Sybil wished she had some popcorn right now. She sat all the way in the back on the right, but she was happy, she didn't have anyone sitting across from as she climbed on the seats to look out the window.
" No way!"-Cyrus
"No, no way what?"-James
"You lost your seat on the bus when you ran that Mosley- Mellie affair nonsense of a story without even running it by me."- Cyrus
" I called for comment. You didn't pick up."- James
"I expected more from you, James."- Cyrus
" Don't bully me for doing my job, Cy. "Times" ran that story, too."- James
Sybil winced at James. He just had to tell, she felt bad for Claire. She was a sweet woman just trying to help but Sybil guess if he couldn't be on the bus, no one in his work could.
" Claire, you're off the bus, too. Ask James why."- Cyrus
Sybil continued watching until she heard Fitz voice behind her.
"Any gossip." Fitz asked her.
"Yeah, James just got Claire in trouble because he did the Mosley-Mellie drama, and she is now kick off the bus." Sybil turned to looked at him before she was returning to her seat.
Fitz nodded before saying" Hey, Sybil?"
"Yes, Governor Grant?" Sybil asked.
"We on top of this, getting this guy to come clean?" Fitz wondered.
" I'm on it. Well Olivia on it. Mastermind and the muscle basically." Sybil tells him.
"Mastermind and the muscle?" Fitz asked.
"There's this guy that I got Olivia to help. Real potential." Sybil states as Fitz sat next to her.
"You got a guy? Another guy? Hell's angel? Mobster? A kindhearted felon who owes you a favor?" Fitz asked her.
"More like he's a fallen angel and he's on probation." Sybil says as Fitz just watched her.
GRANT CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS
Sybil sat on Olivia's desk as she watches Olivia come in. Sybil very interested read a magazine that talked about do's and don'ts: How to know if he like you or not.
" I need the latest poll numbers for Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma." Olivia tells one of the ladies in the campaign.
"I'm on it." The woman replied before walking off.
"Super Tuesday is coming, people, and it's gonna kill us if we don't stay on top of it." Olivia says as she patted Sybil off her desk. Sybil now stood as she read the list as she checks some boxes off. Fitz appeared behind her making her slam the magazine shut.
" Morning." Fitz greeted.
"Morning Governor Grant, how are you this fine morning.?" Sybil greeted as she put the Magazine behind her on the desk as she leans on it. Olivia greeted Fitz just sitting down.
"Sybil, could I talk to you?" Fitz asked.
"Yes, I'll be right back." Sybil says before she told Olivia, and she followed Fitz out in the hallway.
"I'm married." Fitz stated.
"You are." Sybil nodded.
Fitz could tell by her face, she wondered he was going with this. She stood by the wall as her and Fitz stared at each other.
"I'm running for President." Fitz says again.
"I know." Sybil said.
"I can't." Fitz tells her.
"The course has already started. Just keep moving forward, I believe in you. You have my vote, Governor Grant." Sybil stated before Fitz says something that made her stare at him.
"But just stand here with me, for one minute. Let's not go back in there or talk or think or ... For one minute, we just stand here, and I'm not the candidate and you're not the campaign fixer's cousin and helper. We're just us. One minute, for one minute. Just ... stand here with me." Fitz states as he leans up against the wall with her.
"One minute." Sybil says before they just stood there in silence. Their hands almost touching as Fitz tries to inch his pinky towards hers. Mellie yelled for Sybil's attention.
"Oh! Sybil, there you are. You've really got to look at what they have me wearing at the town hall tonight. I really think it's too much." Mellie shout as she came over taking Sybil away from Fitz, as he watched them walk away.
GRANT CAMPAIGN BUS
Sybil stood as everyone watch Cyrus tell the polls for Super Tuesday. She stood by Olivia as Fitz stood by Olivia.
" Just got the tracking polls for Super Tuesday. You're still down with women. They're for Sally and they're not changing their mind." Cyrus said.
"I crushed her in that debate. The whole country saw it." Fitz stated.
"Well, the women didn't think so." Sybil comments as Olivia elbowed her.
"Ow! Livvy." Sybil says as she rubs her side.
"It's hard to win over women when there's a viable female candidate in the race. We've been waiting a long time." Olivia mentions.
"Isn't that the truth." Sybil praised.
"So, what do we do?" Fitz questioned.
"We've got the oppo on her. Three witnesses all willing to speak on the record about snorting coke at a frat party with Sally Langston, back when she was just a Tri Delt." Cyrus suggested.
"It won't work. You can't nail Sally Langston on morality. Sally found God, Cyrus. Once you find God, all is forgiven. That's kind of the point." Olivia mentions.
"No, the point is we can't win without women." Cyrus pointed out.
"No. You take the opposition research and you put it in the garbage. We're playing the rest of the game above board, win or lose." Fitz noted.
"Very honorable of you Governor Grant." Sybil comments as he tries not to smiles.
"Okay." Cyrus agreed.
GRANT CAMPAIGN EVENT, GEORGIA
(Without the sunglasses)
At the event, her, Olivia and Cyrus stood away as they watch Fitz and Mellie asked questions before she started crying out of nowhere. Sybil and Olivia looked at each other as they watch Mellie.
"I'm sorry. I just I can't do this anymore." Mellie sniffles.
"Mel?" Fitz questioned.
"It's okay, honey, I just I need to say it. Um ... A few months ago, Fitz and I found out that we were pregnant with our third child. And we were so thrilled, so excited to bring a new life into our family. But campaigns can be so stressful, and I guess uh- I guess my body just couldn't handle it. And I lost our baby. Even though it was only eight weeks ... It was a baby and it was a member of our family and I have grieved for the loss of our child every day since. And I know that many of you have sensed, um, I don't know, distance between me and Fitz during the campaign, while we have struggled through this terrible experience as best we could. And I should say- Fitz wanted to quit to give us time to take care of each other, but I wouldn't let him, because I truly believe that he is the best person to be President of the United States, and I couldn't let our loss stand in the way of that." Mellie says making Sybil look at Olivia.
"Fuck, holy fuck." Sybil whispered.
"I think that ought to take care of it, don't you?" Mellie told Fitz, who stared at her like he didn't know who she is anymore.
GRANT CAMPAIGN BUS
She sat in her seat watching the trees go by when she felt the seat next to her drop making her turn around to face Fitz.
"Hi." Sybil smiles.
"Hi." Fitz smiles back as it was silent for a bit before she started the conversation.
"I was sorry to hear about your loss. Are you...? Is Mellie okay? If she needs to take a break from the campaign, I'm sure we could-" Sybil told Fitz.
"Mellie's fine. She flew to Alabama. She's doing twelve campaign stops in two days. She's thrilled. Nothing keeps that woman down, not even a fake miscarriage. She's a real catch, my wife. I'm a lucky man." Fitz said to Sybil.
"I'm glad she's okay. I'm sorry." Sybil says.
"Oh, God. Please don't. Don't be nice to me. I'm sitting here complaining to you about my wife, which is sleazy and low and not fair to you and the oldest trick in the book. Suddenly I'm looking down at myself and I'm ... How did I get here? Why didn't I meet you sooner? What kind of a coward was I to marry her and not wait for you to show up?" Fitz states before as Sybil tries to see if he was getting unwanted attention.
" Governor Grant ..." Sybil tries to calm him.
"Oh, for God sake, we are so far beyond the "Governor Grant" crap. Just say my name." Fitz rolled his eyes.
"That's crossing the line. It would be inappropriate." Sybil tells as she tries not to make it obvious.
"Then let's be inappropriate. Say my name." Fitz tries not to coo at her.
"Fitz." Sybil says before she faces forward as Fitz held her hand, rubbing her hand. If her dad could see her now.
HOTEL HALLWAY / HOTEL ROOM / UNKNOWN LOCATION
She, Olivia, Cyrus and Fitz walked their hallway to their rooms. Sybil had got another room for herself so she wouldn't share with Olivia this time. They walk as they came up to Cyrus and Olivia's room.
"This is me. How early are we starting tomorrow?" Cyrus called out before Olivia answered.
"6 AM pancake breakfast at the Baptist church and a prayer meeting."
"I can already feel the holy water burning my pagan flesh. Night." Cyrus says making Sybil laugh before saying.
"Night." Sybil says along with Olivia and Fitz
"Night." Fitz stated.
"Good night" Olivia says before she said good night to Sybil and Fitz.
"Night Livvy." Sybil said as she kissed Olivia's cheek before Fitz waved good night. Olivia went inside her room as Sybil and Fitz went a few doors down to her door.
" This is me." Sybil states as they stood looking at each other.
"I'm down there. Just go in your room and close the door, and we'll pretend this never happened. Go in your room." Fitz says before the two appeared as they two made out as he slid her coat from her body, picking her up setting on the dresser as she got rid of his blazer.
They pause just to look at each other, to relish in each other warmth before he started kissing down her neck as Sybil moans. He kissed down to her legs removing her stockings along with her boots as his touch sears her as he back arch. Once her shoes off. he kissed his way back up to her. As he says those words:
"Take off your clothes." Kissing her neck as she pulled the dress from her body.
"You're doing fine." along the lines as their moans entwined with each other. Not knowing the listener on the other end.
"Yeah, I think I got something. Some woman. Nah, you can't tell who it is. They're not exactly talking. Yep. I'll send it your way." Mystery guy said hanging up the phone.
PRESENT-SYBIL'S HOUSE (OAKLAND)
As the tape plays, hearing his voice as his and her moans are heard before she shut it off. Sybil grew hot, her anger felt like lava.
"Cyrus got this? In the mail? Someone's had this for two years. Why wait? Why now?" Sybil stated as her and Fitz stared at each other.
"All they had was a tape and a voice. They needed the voice. They needed a girl." Fitz explained,
" They needed Amanda Tanner." Sybil realized as she stood up.
"Sybil, are you okay?" Fitz asked standing up.
"I'm pissed. I can't-" Sybil sighs before Fitz held her as Tom and Hal watched awkwardly.
"It's Okay. We'll find out, who it is?" Fitz comforted her.
"I hope you do because if you don't I will." Sybil said pulling back from him. His hands were still on her hips as he didn't want to let her go.
"Hey, don't worry about it." Fitz comforted her again.
"You need to get back to the White House before the press corps comes in." Sybil says as she steps out his reach.
"Mm. I've imagined your place a thousand times. I like it. It's very you." Fitz smiles.
"Well, my mother before she passed was just like me." Sybils says as she watched him take into the place with a small smile.
" I should go." Fitz pointed out.
"You should. But before you go, I need to do something for me." Sybil stare at him.
"What?" Fitz asked.
"There's a motorcycle group called Sons of Anarchy. They have a RICO case against them, and I was wondering if you could get them veto from it. Them and any others around them." Sybil asked.
"Why? What crazy plan is in your mind right now?" Fitz added.
"Just helping a friend. So, can you do it?" Sybil asked.
"Yeah, I'll look into it." Fitz replies as he watches her.
"What?" Sybil asked.
"I love you." Fitz states before he walks over to kiss her forehead as she closed her eyes slowly as he sat their foreheads together.
"You should go." Sybil repeats.
"Just one minute." Fitz whispers as he breathes in her beautiful scent as he relished in her warmth.
"One minute." Sybil whispers too before they lean back away from each other. She walks them out the door as she gave nods to Tom and Hal before her, and Fitz was face by each other again.
"Good-bye, Sybil." Fitz said.
"Night, President Grant." Before she closed the door. She leaned on the back of the door as she took a deep breath before going to clean up the dishes. Her phone buzzed as Harrison sent her a text.
To: Sybil
From: Harrison
The baby's not Fitz. It's someone's else.
Sybil didn't know why she smiled. Maybe because he was in the clear or maybe because her feelings would never go away from Fitz. She finished the dishes, walking up the stairs and to her room where she wouldn't be seen till the morning.
