CHAPTER THREE, gold medal & museum
Soon enough the group were in Washington, DC, where they met up with Ally and Finn. Everyone was currently sleeping...That is until Austin rolled over and opened his eyes, catching himself before he could fall out of his bed when he saw what time it was. Austin ran over to the alarm clock, picking it up.
"Guys, guys, get up!" He shouts, setting the alarm clock down and turning to face his friends. "Come on, we're gonna be late for the ceremony!" That quickly woke everyone up and everyone was in a panic to get ready quickly. Besides Dez which confused Delaney. She thought he would just be as panicked as the rest of them.
"Austin, you can't be late today! This is a big deal!" Ally commented as she got out of bed the same time Trish climbed down from the top bunk above the bottom bunk Ally had slept in.
"I know!" Delaney agrees. "It's a once in a life time opportunity to get a teen role model award from the American parent association."
"Yeah," Austin nods, putting a jacket over his red shirt he put on earlier. "And role models are always on time so let's go!" He said in an urgent voice, gesturing for them all to get dressed.
As Finn changes shirts, he looks over at Dez with furrowed eyebrows. "Dude, why aren't you getting ready?"
"Yeah, Dez, hurry up! We're gonna be late!" Trish told the red-head.
"Oh, no." Dez scoffs. "No, we're not." His friends stared at him with confusion.
Delaney was in mid reach to grab her shirt she was going to wear this day when he said that and she lowers her arm, turning to face him with furrowed eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
"I changed the time on the clocks so there would be no way we'd oversleep." Dez smiled.
Austin's eyes widen and he exchanges a surprised look with Delaney before they both look at Dez. "What?" They both said in unison and then just Austin asks, "Wait, so it's not ten o'clock?" He then gestured at the alarm clock.
Dez chuckles. "Nope, it's four am." Delaney groans with annoyance, leaning her head back as she did so while Finn's shoulders drop in defeat, staring at Dez with disbelief. "You're welcome."
"Why would we ever be thankful for that?" Finn whined.
"We literally woke up for no reason at all." Delaney muttered, leaning her head on Finn's shoulders since he was the closest person to her and she then closed her eyes since she was tired.
"Great!" Ally said sarcastically, rolling her eyes. "Now I'm wide awake. There's no way I'll get back to sleep now."
"Yeah, me either." Austin sighed, finishing buckling the belt on his jeans he had put on before Dez told them all it wasn't ten o'clock.
Finn glances at Delaney with an amused smile. "Delaney could go back to sleep. In fact, she might already be asleep."
"Nah, I'm awake." Delaney spoke tiredly, not bothering to open her eyes. Austin smiled slightly, looking at her with a fond expression since he thought she was cute.
As Austin, Ally, and Trish walk into the kitchen, Finn gently nudges Delaney with his shoulder. "Laney, you up?"
"I'm up." Delaney lifted her head up reluctantly, rubbing her eyes tiredly, and she glanced at Finn with a small smile. He chuckled lightly, smiling back at her and the two of them walked into the kitchen where their friends were at getting breakfast.
"I can't believe last night was the final night of your tour." Ally spoke.
"Yeah, I'm kinda sad." Austin admits with a frown as he pours some cereal into five bowls that Finn had grabbed and sat on the table. "My first tour is over."
When she heard footsteps, Delaney glances to her right and saw Dez was standing there. Finn looks over as well and while he smiles with amusement, Delaney chuckles quietly because of how messy Dez's red hair was. They both turn their attention to Trish when the short girl comments, "It's been fun traveling around."
"Yeah, I agree." Delaney smiles. "I never would've been able to gone to any of different states we've been too. I'm glad I decided to finish the tour with you guys."
Austin smiles at her. "Me too."
"In total we've been to twenty-three different states." Trish said.
"Twenty-four if you count us being here in Washington, D.C." Dez chimed in.
As she gets the milk for the cereal, Ally presses her lips together in a tight line. She shakes her head. "I don't. It's not a state."
"Wait, hold up." Finn's eyes widen, glancing to his right where Ally stood with surprise. "It's not?"
"No, it's not." Ally replies, her eyes widening with surprise. "You thought it was a state this whole time?"
"Yeah." Finn shrugs. "I mean, Washington is a state so I thought Washington D.C. was a state as well. I'm not good with states. I don't even remember half of them."
Ally narrows her eyes at him. "How are you even a junior?"
"I don't know." Finn sighs. "It's four in the morning," He whines, leaning his head on her shoulder, but because of how taller he was he had to bend down slightly. "It's too early for you to scold me." Ally looks slightly offended by the fact he thought she was going to scold him and then just shook her head, smiling softly at him and pat his head.
Picking up a bowl of cereal, Dez looks at the brunette with an annoyed expression. "Nobody likes a know-it-all, Ally."
Ally rolled her eyes and Finn lifts his head off her shoulder, standing up straighter and smiling sympathetically at Ally. Ally shook her head, sending him a small smile to assure him she was okay and she sat down at the table, grabbing a bowl of cereal to put milk in it as Finn sat beside her and did the same. Meanwhile, Austin and Delaney were getting their own bowl of cereal, playfully fighting over who would get what bowl despite the fact they're all the same.
Trish chuckles at Austin and Delaney and walks over to the other side of the bus, picking up a bag and bringing it back over to the group. "Look, I bought a headband in every single city so I wouldn't forget a thing."
Delaney smiles at Trish. "Great idea, Trish."
Trish grins. "Remember Vegas?" She then put on a headband that said 'los vegas'. The headband was bright and dramatic just like Vegas was. Delaney laughed along with the boys, smiling at Trish. The headband was perfect for her.
"Oh, nice!" Austin compliments, setting his bowl on the table. "I did the same thing, only I got t-shirts in every city." He walks over to where his t-shirts were hung up. He then shows his friends the t-shirts he got.
Delaney furrows her eyebrows, sharing a confused look with Trish, who now stood beside her. "Blondie," She said, looking at Austin with confusion. "Those are all white. How are you gonna know what state you got them from?"
Austin looks at his shirts, his shoulders dropping in defeat when he realized she was right. He pouts. "Awe!" With an upset expression on his face, he hung up the t-shirts.
"Anyway, Lanes" Austin glances at Delaney with a grin, walking over to open one of the bottom cabinets by the door. He opens it and gets out a small gift bag. "Since you couldn't be with us for the whole tour, I got you bracelets from all the states we've been to. I know you love wearing bracelets so I thought you'd like one from different states."
Delaney looks at him with surprise, her heart warming because of the sweet gesture. "Austin, you didn't have to do that."
Austin stands by her with a soft smile on his face. "I wanted to."
Delaney smiled fondly at him and after she set her bowl down on the table, she takes the bag from Austin and opened it, smiling excitedly upon seeing all the cool looking bracelets. She picked them all out, noticing they all said what state Austin had got them from. At least he didn't do the same thing he did with his shirts and even if he did Delaney still would've loved the bracelets.
She looks at him, noticing he now had a nervous expression on his face. He was nervous about what she would think about his gift for her and hoped she liked it. Delaney sets the bracelet and the bag on the table, pulling Austin in for a hug which surprised him because he froze at the sudden hug. "Thanks, Austin. I love the bracelets."
Sighing with relief, Austin relaxes and wraps his arms around her to hug her back. "You're welcome. I'm glad you like them." Even though he didn't want to let go, he knew he should and so he did. Plus he then remembered about the gift he got for Finn. "Oh!" He pulls away from Delaney and walks over to the other side of the bus where a bag was at. "Finn, we all got you something." He walks back over with the bag, handing it to Finn, who looks at him with surprise. "We all chipped in and got you some guitar pics from each state we went to. Since you're starting to learn how to play the guitar, we thought it would be cool to get you guitar pics from different states."
Finn looks at his friends with a bright smile. "Guys, you didn't have to get me anything." He opens the bag, smiling excitedly upon looking at the different guitar pics. "But these are super cool. Thanks, guys!"
"No, problem." Trish smiles. She turns to face Ally with a grin, grabbing onto her hand and pulling her up from the seat. "And speaking of gifts, Ally, I have a surprise for you." Ally smiles and follows Trish over to the cabinets by the door. "Since you weren't with us for most of the tour, I've collected tea cups from every city for you."
Ally laughs in disbelief as Trish takes off the blanket that was covering the teacups on the counter by the cabinets. "Thanks, Trish!" She smiles widely, holding onto the tea cup Trish handed her. "I love them." Trish picked one up with a smile.
Delaney walks over to the other girls and picks one up to look at it closer and smiles. "These are really pretty, Trish."
"Pretty, but useless." Dez cut in, putting his hands on his hips. "I bought a souvenir bowling ball at every stop."
Austin and Finn stand by the girls as Finn furrows his eyebrows, staring at the red-head with confusion. "Why-Just..." He shakes his head, not understanding why Dez would want to buy a bowling ball at every place they've been to. "Why?"
Dez walks over to the cabinets by the door and opens the first one. He grunts as he picks an orange one. He smiles at his friends. "Pretty and useful."
When the sound of glass breaking is heard, everyone watches with wide eyes and the girls scream. Delaney yelps and moves backwards because of the sudden crash. She accidentally bumped into Austin, but he didn't mind and in fact he wrapped his arm around her waist, keeping her closer to him as if he thought that would keep her more safe from possibly getting hurt from the bowling balls crashing into the tea cups.
One after another all the bowling balls fell onto the tea cups Trish had gotten for Ally. Finn had grabbed both Ally's and Trish's arms, pulling them away as some of the broken tea cups fell on the ground in front of them along with the bowling balls. Dez sets down the orange bowling ball on the floor and picks up a multi colored one. "Oh man!" He frowns. He looks at Ally with an upset expression, pointing at the bowling ball. "Ally, your tea cup scratched my bowling ball." He groaned and trudged back to the room everyone slept in.
Ally and Trish happened to turn around and walk at the same time, but they ran into each other, causing them to break the tea cups. Delaney grimaced as she looked at the broken tea cups on the ground.
"Well, at least you got one." Delaney said with a sheepish expression and handed Ally the tea cup she had.
Ally takes the tea cup from her carefully, smiling at her. "Thanks, Delaney."
Upon realizing she felt something around her waist, Delaney looked down and felt her face heat up when she saw Austin's arm was wrapped around her waist. When the accident with the bowling balls happened, she didn't even realize Austin had wrapped an arm around her waist and even pulled her away so she wouldn't get hurt. Delaney glanced at Austin with a shy smile, ignoring the fact she felt her face heat up. Austin smiled at her, but then his eyes widen in realization, just then realizing his arm was still around her waist. He quickly removed his arm, blushing faintly out of embarrassment as he rubbed the back of his neck. With an awkward smile on his face, he then awkwardly pointed over his shoulder, signaling he was going to walk into the other room. Delaney chuckled lightly, glancing at the floor with a shy smile.

(what delaney had wore to the ceremony & what she wears for the rest of the chapter & part of next chapter, but instead of the heels she wore sandals in that color)
After the ceremony was done, the group made it back to the bus. "That was awesome!" Ally comments. She smiles. "That was a really nice ceremony."
"Whoo! Yeah!" Austin smiles widely, facing his friends as he holds onto the medal he wore. "Who knew that being a teen role model would score me an actual gold medal?"
Dez laughs, shaking his head. "Oh, I'm sure it's not a real gold metal." He stands by Austin, holding onto the metal. "Probably just chocolate covered with gold foil."
"Dez, I don't think-" Delaney pauses in the middle of her sentence, raising her eyebrows as Dez bites the medal. "So." She finished her sentence, rolling her eyes when Dez winced.
"Ow." Dez whines. Austin takes the medal from him and cleans off the spot Dez bit. "Okay." He looks at the medal suspiciously. "It's real."
"What's with the negative energy, Dez?" Trish asks him. "Are you jealous of Austin's award?"
Dez scoffs. "Course not. It's just some stupid gold medal." Delaney raises her eyebrows, not believing Dez for a second. She nods and crosses her arms, not surprised when Dez turns to face Austin with a pleading expression. Dez holds onto the medal. "But can I have it?! I've never won a medal before."
Chuckling lightly, Austin takes the medal from him and smiles apologetically at him. "Sorry, bud, but this is going on my trophy self," He dreamingly said the next part of his sentence. "Right next to my empty spot for my first record of the year award."
"Got a lot of empty spots on my trophy shelf too..." Dez sadly speaks, dropping his shoulders in defeat with a sad look. "'Cause I've never own anything."
"If it makes you feel any better I go tno trophies either." Delaney chimed in.
Dez is quiet for a few seconds, looking like he's thinking, but then he shakes his head. "Nah, it doesn't make me feel any better." He faces Austin, grabbing onto the medal. Austin jumps, startled by Dez. "Now give it to me!" The boys fight over the medal, but Austin won in the end and got it away from Dez, who groaned and glared at Austin.
Meanwhile, Finn and the girls had sat down on the couch and Finn exchange a look with Ally and Delaney when the three of them noticed Trish was on her phone again. She had been on her phone all morning and they wanted to know why. "Okay, Trish, what's the deal?" Finn questioned, looking at Trish curiously.
Trish chuckles. "What do you mean?"
"Trish. You've been checking your phone all morning." Ally pointed out.
"Yeah," Delaney tilts her head to the side. "So what's the deal?"
Trish smiles excitedly. "I'm working on something super exciting for tonight." Delaney and Finn shares an excited look as Trish continues. "I want it to be a big surprise, so I'm not gonna say another word." Trish pretended to zip her lips and throw away the key.
"Cool." Ally smiles excitedly, sharing a smile with Delaney and Finn before she looks back at Trish. "I love surprises."
"Okay," Trish stands up, smiling excitedly at Austin. "It involves Austin performing for a really famous person at a once in a lifetime event!" She then giggled excitedly.
Austin chuckles. "Way to not say another word."
"Well, Ally was badgering me." Trish defended herself and Ally looked at her with offense.
"Not true." Finn argued.
"So who's the famous person? What's the special event?" Austin questioned as he and the others looked at Trish excitedly.
"What part of 'I want it to be a big surprise' didn't you understand?" Trish inquired.
"The part when you said Austin was performing for a famous person at a once in a lifetime event." Delaney remarked and her friends nodded in agreement.
Trish shrugs and sits down at the table, getting back on her phone. "So, what do we wanna do on our last day in D.C?" Dez inquired.
"Definitely something fun." Finn smiled.
"Funny you should ask." Ally stands up with a wide smile and reveals a piece of paper that was in her back pocket. "I've put together an itinerary of really fun things to do." Delaney and Finn stood as well, joining their friends. Delaney stood by Austin and Dez as Finn stood by Ally.
Finn stares at her with a deadpanned expression. "Ally, I said fun." He scoffs, crossing his arms. "An itinerary is not fun."
"Exactly." Austin agrees. "The fact you already used the word 'itinerary' already means it's not gonna be fun."
"But it will be." Ally grins. "I found a slew of exciting options: the I.R.S. Headquarters, the national archives...And get this...John Philip Sousa's birth house."
Delaney then pretends to fall asleep, leaning her head on Austin's shoulder and pretends to snore. Some of her friends laugh at her antics while Ally just rolls her eyes. "Okay, it's not that boring."
Delaney lifts her head off Austin's shoulder, sharing a smile with him as Finn apologetically smiles at Ally. "Sorry, Ally, but you're itinerary might be more boring than watching paint dry."
Trish stands up, putting a comforting hand on Ally's arm. "This is why we never let you pick." She then shakes her head and looks at her friends with a smile. "I want to go shopping."
"I want to go to a water park." Dez smiled.
"Okay, fine, we'll compromise." Ally interjects. "We'll go to the Smithsonian museum."
Her friends stare at her with disbelief. "How is a museum a compromise?" Austin inquired.
"Because they have lots of movie memorabilia for you guys," Ally said to him and Dez. She grins. "And the most comprehensive collection of first lady bobbleheads for cool kids like me, Trish, and Delaney." She chuckled, smiling at Delaney and Trish and raised her hand for a high five from the other two girls. Delaney and Trish both shook their heads, grimacing at her and Trish put down her hand.
****
Delaney wasn't really fans of museums. She found them boring so she wasn't that excited about being at one right now. She trudged by Austin and Dez as the tour guide brought them over to an item in the museum. The only one in the gruop who seemed excited and happy to be there was Ally.
"Wait 'till you see this." The tour guide laughs excitedly. "In 1913, Ford invented the moving assembly line and introduced it at his Detroit plant." He then gestures for the group to join him on saying, "Ooh." The group did say 'ooh', but in a flat voice and clearly not as upbeat as he sounded.
Ally steps forward. "Actually, modern scholars don't believe Ford invented the assembly line. It was four of his employees." She laughed and smiled as the group all said 'ooh' more upbeat this time.
"Well, did you think this was audience participation time?" The tour guide asks her, and Ally joins him along with laughing. She stops laughing when he suddenly stops. He looks at her with annoyance. "It's not." The group then once again said 'ooh'. The tour guide smiles at the group. "And I will continue the tour if that's okay with Mrs. Know-it-all."
Ally follows the tour guide who was leading the group to another part of the museum. She chuckles. "Since I'm a single female, technically I'm a Ms. Know-it-all."
Before the group could finish saying 'ooh', the tour guide stops walking and turns to face the group, stopping them from continuing. "Since you are so well informed, maybe you should be the one giving the tours, hmm?" The tour guide asks Ally and it was clear he was annoyed with her by the tone of his voice. Despite the fact Ally shook her head in response, the tour guide then said, "I'm going on break." He walked away, leaving Ally in charge of the tour.
"Well, I hope you don't break anything on your break." Ally calls out to him. "Ooh!" She said, looking back at the group with confusion when they didn't join her. They all looked at her with disapproving looks. Finn sheepishly smiled at her, patting her shoulder to comfort her as he walked away when the group began to disperse.

Delaney and Finn joins Ally and Trish on the next tour Ally was guiding while Austin and Dez continued to look around the museum. After Ally made a corny joke that no one laughed at but her, Trish faces the small group with a smile. "And that corny joke concludes our tour. I'll take your money now. Exact change is appreciated." After the small group paid Trish and left, the four friends stood by each other.
"I can't believe people are paying us money for this tour." Ally commented as Trish counted the money.
Trish glances at her, shaking her head. "Oh, no one's paying you anything."
Delaney points at the money in Trish's hand. "Can I get some of that?"
"Ooh, yeah, if you're handing out money I'll take some." Finn chimed in with a grin on his face.
"Ugh, fine." Trish groans, handing Delaney and Finn a couple of dollars. Delaney and Finn grinned and they put their money they received in their pockets.
Ally looks at Trish with offense. "They didn't even do anything!"
"You don't get any after that corny joke you told." Trish told her and Ally grimaced, nodding in understanding.
"Wait," Ally's furrows her eyebrows when she realized something. "It's too quiet." She looks around the museum with panic as Trish puts away her money. "Where's Dez?"
Trish glances around the museum, pointing at Dez when she noticed where he was at. "Over by that antigque stuff."
Ally looks at her with wide eyes. "And you left him there alone?!"
"I'm sure he has common sense not to touch anything." Finn reassured her as he and the other girls followed Ally over to where Dez is.
Delaney scoffs. "Yeah, right. Have you met Dez?"
"Dez!" Ally exclaimed and the red-headed boy walked over to his friends with his hands in his pcokets.
"What? I didn't touch anything." Dez defends himself. He takes his hands out of his pockets and Delaney and Finn look at him with surprise when they saw his hands were handcuffed to his pants. "I couldn't. Trish handcuffed my hands to my pants."
"Don't make me regret taking these off." Trish commented, using the key to unlock the handcuffs.
"Guys," Delaney looks over to her right when she heard Austin call out to them and by the tone of his voice he sounded excited. "You've got to check out the movie exhibits!" Austin runs over to the group with a grin on his face. "There's tons of cool stuff!"
Delaney's eyes widen at seeing him wearing different items of clothing from movies. "We were too busy keeping Dez from touching stuff that we forgot about Austin!" She exclaimed, walking over to where Austin was with her friends.
"Woah, that's Michael Jackson's jacket!" Trish excitedly pointed out.
Austin then did Michael Jackson's iconic dance move and his iconic pose. Then in a high pitched voice he said, "Hee-hee!"
Delaney smiles slightly and nods. "Impressive." She commented, watching with a small smile as Austin moonwalked.
With a gasp, Dez points at the boxing gloves Austin wore. "And those are the boxing gloves from the 'rocky' movies!"
Finn grins. "Those movies were great."
Austin raises his arms up, imitating one of the voice of one of the character's in the rocky movies as he quotes a line. "'Yo, Adrian! We did it!''
His friends smile and laugh, but Ally steps forward with a grimaced expression. "Austin, you're not supposed to be touching stuff." When she looks down, she gasps excitedly. "Hold the ketchup." She looks at Austin with a grin, pointing at the silver heels Austin wore. "Are those the original silver shoes from 'the wizard of oz'?"
"Yeah, what gives?" Austin waves a dismissive hand and frowns. He looks down at the silver shoes, clicking his heels together like how Dorthey did in the movie. "I thought they were supposed to be Ruby colored."
"In the movie." Ally laughs. "Real fans know that in the book and the play they were silver." She grins. "Ooh, I'm gonna add that on my next museum tour."
"Cool! You put on Dorothy's shoes and the wicked witch's socks." Dez commented and Delaney looked down to see Austin's socks did look similar to the wicked witch's socks.
Austin looks at him with offense. "The socks are mine."
"Wow." Dez laughs. "You wear some crazy clothes."
Finn glances at him with raised eyebrows. "Said the boy wearing a cat shirt and different colored pants."
"Austin, you need to take those shoes off." Trish told the blonde boy.
Austin furrows his eyebrows. "Why?" He glances down at the shoes. "You think I'm gonna ruin them?"
"No, I wanna try 'em on." Trish laughed.
Austin chuckles and walks over to a nearby bench with his friends following him. He puts his foot on the bench and tries to take the silver heel off. He grunts, using all his strength to get the heel off. He chuckled nervously, deciding on trying to take off the other heel. And when that doesn't look, his friends were looking at him nervously.
"Austin," Delaney gains the blonde's attention, looking at him worriedly. "What's wrong?"
"They're stuck." Austin replied, glancing at her with a worried expression.
"Your feet must've swelled." Trish suggested.
"Or the shoe must've shrunk. Either way, this is bad." Austin spoke.
"Guys, we gotta get those shoes off." Finn said worriedly. "If we don't get them off we're gonna be in big trouble."
Austin sits down on the bench, continuing to try to take the silver shoes off. Ally bends down to help him, looking at him with a stern look. "This is why we don't touch stuff, young man." She scolded him.
"Exactly! You, sir, are no role model." Dez yanked the medal from Austin's neck and the velcro ripped. Dez grinned, putting the gold medal around his neck and Austin watched with a look of offense. Delaney rolled her eyes at Dez and hit his shoulder as a way to scold him.
"So what are we gonna do?" Trish inquired.
"Well, first things first," Dez points at Austin. "We have to find you a sparkly dress to go with those shoes," He puts a hand on his hip, gesturing to Austin's outfit. "Because this is a fashion don't." He sassily said.
"Dez," Delaney rolls her eyes. "Austin's outfit is the least of our problems right now."
