16. going for a ride
"I don't wanna do it," Tommy whined. "I'm not a little errand bitch, make Johnny do it."
As the sun started to set in golden waves over the horizon blocked by towering pines, the kids were starting to loudly complain about hunger. They had put in an order for 40 pizzas to feed all the kids and staff, and now there was just the issue of who would be picking up such a hefty order.
"I'm fine with that," Johnny shrugged, sparing a glance Larusso's way, and he seemed to meet Johnny's eyes. "I'll just need someone to help me load them up."
"I can help," Larusso offered, doing a fair attempt at trying not to sound like a too-overexcitable puppy.
"Can I come, too?" Ali asked. "It'd be nice to go for a ride, it's been forever."
"Oh, maybe," Johnny replied, doing an attempt of his own at trying not to sound too unnerved at the wrench being thrown in his plan. "Here, give me a second." he offered the group a charming smile, pulling Larusso aside.
"I guess I don't mind her coming along for the ride," Larusso murmured, looking as though he did very much mind. "I mean, yeah, we can't...go at it, but it's nothing new...I'm not so shallow that I'm not gonna let Ali come along..."
Johnny scoffed, pulling away so that he didn't hold Larusso's arms too long in front of the others. "I don't think you understand the opportunity. I was hoping...that you could go for a little ride yourself, Larusso." he whispered suggestively, his eyes locked on Larusso's so that he could drink in every delicious change of light in Daniel's increasingly needy eyes.
"Okay, maybe I am that shallow..." Daniel replied, and Johnny just grinned wolfishly at that as he watched Larusso approach Jessica, whispering something to her. Jessica nodded in sudden understanding and spoke up to where Ali could hear:
"Hey, Ali, if you go, you'll miss E.T.! I know it's your favorite, but the kids aren't gonna wait."
"Oh, you're right," Ali frowned, turning back to Johnny. "Sorry, E.T. is just too cute. You don't mind going with Daniel, though, do you? I'm sure you guys are getting along a bit better now."
"It'll be fine, we'll manage," Johnny insisted, wrapping an arm around Daniel's shoulders and giving him a playful noogie, which Daniel wrenched out of, glaring at Johnny and running a hand through his already fine-looking hair.
"Yeah, let's just go," Larusso huffed, and the two let one of the adult advisors know before heading down the path to the parking area.
"You never mentioned anything about a pizza errand," Larusso pointed out on the walk, as the area around them was filled with nothing but skipping rocks and bugs buzzing.
"Didn't wanna jinx it," Johnny replied simply, wishing he had something to do with his hands. For how long he'd gone without a drive, the car really wasn't that far off.
"What, 'cause getting with me is a dream?" Larusso asked, all smug and grinning stupidly.
"Oh, please," Johnny rolled his eyes, attempting to act nonchalant, but in truth, he was tight-lipped due to nerves. He'd had sex before, plenty of times. But never with a boy. Never with Daniel. What if it was just meant to be a hookup (and it was) but it became something life-changing?
"Johnny," Larusso started softly, breaking the silence. "You alright?"
"Oh, huh?" Johnny replied, voice clearly inattentive. "Oh, yeah, everything's good here." he fibbed, sending Daniel a charming smile that he really didn't feel was owed. Honestly, since when did he have to save face, or talk about his deep inner feelings, with Larusso?
"John," Daniel said again. "It's okay to be nervous. We don't have to--"
And Johnny actually laughed at that. At Daniel's startled expression, he laughed even more. "I'm not nervous, Larusso, honestly. It's not prom night. I got everything figured out..." he paused thoughtfully. "And what's with you calling me John? It makes me feel old..."
"Is that not your name?" Daniel asked.
"It is, it's just that no one calls me that but my mom when she's mad at me." Johnny replied. Not even Sid called him John--he mostly referred to to him under a myriad of other loving nicknames, like "bastard" or "ungrateful brat".
"Would you rather me just stick to Johnny, then?" Daniel asked. "I don't wanna kill the mood by making you think you're in trouble for getting off, John Jennifer Lawrence."
Johnny rolled his eyes. "You wanna know something, Larusso?" He didn't wait for an answer. "You are absolutely obnoxious." He noticed that they were coming in close to his Avanti and grinned as he got an idea, relishing any opportunity to tease Daniel. "You wanna know something else?" He pinned Daniel to the passenger side door, watching as his rich brown eyes widened, his lips slightly parted. Why was it he was always going around like that, practically asking to be kissed? "It doesn't matter what you call me. Would you like for me to tell you why?"
Daniel looked as if he'd lost all connection to his brain for a second, his mouth opening and closing as he glanced down at Johnny's lips. "Why's that?" he asked finally, his voice so faint, it was really more like mouthing.
"Because at the end of the day, you're just gonna be screaming my name, anyway." Johnny insisted, voice low as he pressed open-mouthed kisses to Daniel's jawline, up to his earlobe, and back down to his lips, catching a whine as it almost left his lips.
"That's the worst...that's the worst line..." Daniel insisted between kisses, letting out a little groan from his throat as Johnny pressed the hard outline of his cock against his own.
"I don't need lines, not with you," Johnny replied, holding Daniel's chin up gently, the urge to kiss him more overwhelming, if only overpowered by the need to not waste a single minute. "Now get in the car, before I do you on top of it." He pinched Daniel's thigh before heading around and unlocking the car, getting in and leaning over to open the door for Daniel.
"Do me on top of it?" Larusso asked, hopping into shotgun as if he'd done so a thousand times before. "What am I, your sex toy?"
"So what if you are?" Johnny fired back, smiling Daniel's way with a faux sweetness. "Is that a problem?"
Daniel pouted in a way that made Johnny unable to help but laugh. "I'm using you a lot more than you're using me," he insisted.
Johnny just rolled his eyes, but as he started up the car and pulled out onto the main road, he studied their surroundings curiously. They were nowhere near Encino, with its towering houses and springy sprawling green lawns; but they weren't near the rubble of Reseda, either. It was a middle ground of middle-class grocery stores and liquor marts, cars of all types flooding the streets around them.
"I forgot how busy this town was," Daniel said casually enough, but for some reason, him pointing out his observations on the world, like when they hiked, was strangely intimate to Johnny.
"Me too," Johnny spared no disdain from his tone. "Camp's like another world. Less people, less fuss. I hate big cities..."
Daniel was doing this thing--not that Johnny was glancing his way--where he was sitting with his hands under his thighs, and Johnny would have to stop looking at him, he'd have to stop finding him cute. "The city's more progressive, though. You know, Stonewall and all."
Johnny gave him an incredulous look before focusing back on the road. "What do you know about Stonewall?"
"I read about the riots," Daniel shrugged, his cheeks flushing at the implication. He seemed almost sheepish about it, though Johnny couldn't possibly know why. "I am, you know." he swallowed. "Bisexual. Like Bowie. Knowing about that stuff and having pride in who I am is important to me."
"Hm," Johnny hummed, feeling like an idiot to say the least. He felt an odd, anxious tingling in his arms and legs that he hadn't felt in a long time, probably not since the All Valley. Here Daniel was, confessing something that was meaningful to him--the very thing that kept Johnny awake with worry for the longest time--and Johnny couldn't say a damn thing to match. "You like Bowie?" he asked instead.
Daniel nodded with a hum. "Do you?"
"I dunno, he's kind of a freak," Johnny laughed, unable to help it as he saw Daniel cross his arms like a prudish chick in shotgun. "Okay, fine, Under Pressure was pretty good." he hummed a few of the bars, tapping out the famous starting beat.
"I like Heroes," Daniel admitted with a smile as Johnny pulled into the parking lot of the pizza place.
"Of course you do," Johnny rolled his eyes fondly, putting the car in park cutting it off. "Anyways, here's the plan: we get the food quick, and then if we play our cards right, we'll have time for a quickie. No weird foreplay or anything, I don't wanna come in with cold food."
Daniel gave only a vexed look. "You want the car to be smelling like pizza while we do it? Gee, you're such a romantic, Johnny."
"You're pushing my buttons, Larusso, you whiny bitch." Johnny glanced around only to see the place pretty much secluded, and he risked pressing a kiss to Daniel's lips right there in the car. Even though the top was up, Daniel looked stunned. It was such a bizarrely cute expression, he almost wished he had Ali's polaroid camera she always carried around when they were 16. Johnny told himself that before the summer was out, he wanted to get some pictures of Daniel. Loads.
"Come on," Johnny got out of the car and waited for Larusso, going into the pizza place with Daniel close on his heels.
The place smelled really good--and it made Johnny remember just how hungry he tended to get after sex. Of all the things he brought--Vaseline, a towel, a couple condoms (probably more than he needed, as if the first three were gonna break, so he obviously needed a fourth spare)--he didn't think to bring a snack or water. Above all, the place looked wildly busy, underpaid teens rushing every which way trying to get everything under control.
"Hey," Johnny greeted the cashier. "We've got an order under 'Camp'?"
"Oh, you guys," the cashier replied, sparing no ice in his tone--and Johnny didn't want to be an asshole, but his tip may as well have evaporated in midair. "The forty pizzas. There's been a delay of about thirty minutes. On behalf of Ricky's, I apologize for the inconvenience."
He didn't look very sorry. Daniel was practically jumping for joy on the balls of his feet.
"Get it together, would you, Larusso?" Johnny hissed before looking back up at the cashier. "Alright, well, I'll need to use the phone. Also," he pulled out a five from his wallet. "I'll have two bottles of water, please." The cashier got the two bottles from the refrigerated display along with his change, and Johnny handed one to Larusso.
"I'll try and see if I have any cash to pay you back--" Daniel started.
"Don't worry about it," Johnny clapped Daniel on the shoulder and went to the phone, dialing the camp's number, which he'd memorized years prior.
After about three rings, a familiar voice picked up. "Camp Triple Pine, where every day brings a new adventure. This is Bobby, how may I help you?"
"Hey, man," Johnny pointedly tried not to roll his finger around in the phone's coiled wire like a girl talking to her crush, but with Daniel watching him curiously, he couldn't help it. "Ricky's is having a delay. It's gonna be thirty--" he frowned as Daniel shook his head, but settled with a sigh. "Forty-five minutes at least. Crazy, I know. We'll just have to wait it out."
"Oh, that sucks. Sorry about that. I'll let them know--" There was some chatter in the background on the other line, and a girl's voice came on, urgent in tone:
"John Jean Lawrence, you and Daniel play nicely or I'm putting centipedes in your bed!"
Johnny rolled his eyes. Well, he could see where Daniel got it from.
"Jess, leave the man alone, they'll be fine." Bobby insisted. "Sorry about that, she's just--Jess, what's that? No, I don't think you should--put that down! Sorry, Johnny, I gotta go. See you when you get here, if the kids don't get too hungry and eat me first--" there was some more chatter, then the call cut off, and Johnny hung the phone back up.
"Hey, Larusso, what's your take on past lives?" Johnny asked, leading Larusso back out to the car.
"Past lives?" Daniel asked in turn, looking politely puzzled. "I don't believe in 'em, but to each their own, I guess. Why?"
"I'm convinced Jess was a golden retriever in her past life." Johnny answered, getting in the car and opening the door for Daniel.
"That makes sense," Daniel laughed, head in his hand and elbow on the console, leaning forward in interest. "Where to, chauffer?"
(Johnny wondered how many times he'd have to kiss Larusso to get him to stop saying stupid, silly things all the time. He wondered if he'd quite like Larusso so much, or feel so attracted to him, without the quick quirky comments. He wondered if he'd ever meet a girl like Daniel, and, well...that scared him.)
(He supposed Jessica was well enough like Daniel, and that scared him even more.)
"Somewhere more private," Johnny insisted. "One of the back roads where no one will get to hear your pretty sounds but me..." he ran the pad of his thumb across Daniel's bottom lip as he'd done several times before, as if he could convert it to memory, as if he'd want to convert it to memory.
"Weird foreplay and all?" Daniel asked, eyes alight and one brow cocked in a way that made Johnny used to want to knock Daniel's lights out. Now, it was less that and more Johnny wanting to splay Daniel across the backseat and leave him breathless.
"Weird foreplay and all," Johnny replied, a firm promise as he started up the car, heading towards what strangely felt like a new chapter, his hand comforting on Daniel's thigh the whole time.
