Camp Junburg
You had been sitting on the bus for what felt like hours, your excitement slowly turning into nervousness as the bus got closer to the destination.
You always had wanted to go to summer camp. After all, you'd been looking forward to this summer camp for months, but now that you were actually there, you couldn't help but feel a little intimidated.
You had never been away from home before and the thought of spending the next few weeks with a group of strangers was daunting.
The rocky atmosphere of the woods was new and made the bus jump up and down, adding you into the jump. You bounced up and down on your seat, every once in a while having to hold onto the sides after flying into the air.
You could hear the excited chatter of the other campers, their laughter filling the air. But you couldn't bring myself to join in. You looked around the bus, hoping someone would gain the confidence to talk to you.
However, everyone on the bus seemed to be interested in their own conversations. They were all in their own little groups, catching up on old friendships and making plans for the summer.
You felt like an outsider, a feeling you were all too familiar with.
So instead of gaining the confidence yourself to speak to someone, you looked outside the window, which was in hope to calm you down but instead worsened your anxiety.
The thick and deep forest that the bus drove along made your stomach turn. Why had you wanted to come to a place so far away from your parents' safety?
The sun shone right into your eyes brightly and made you squint. However, the sun was blocked just for a moment by a big, wooden sign above the entrance of the camp. In big letters the words written out was 'Camp Junburg'.
You were here.
You sat upright in your seat, looking to the front of the bus, there were much more buses up front. Now feeling a sense of anticipation and excitement, you knew that this was going to be your home for the next few weeks, and you were determined to make the most of it.
As the camp bus came to a stop, you took a deep breath and looked around nervously. You had to keep reminding yourself that you were a new camper at Camp Junburg, so of course you didn't know anyone. Yet, it didn't stop your heart from racing in your chest. This was it, your first day at Camp Junburg.
You could feel your hands trembling as you grabbed your backpack, in which you kept a tight hold on as you stood up from your seat.
As you made your way to the front of the bus, you couldn't help but feel like everyone was staring at you. You tried to ignore it because they were focused solely on the people sitting next to them or just trying getting off the bus.
It did made sense that they all knew each other, since their laughter and chats were focused on camp last year.
You smiled at the bus driver and gave a, "thanks," while you stood at the steps to the outdoors.
The people in front of you ran out to a place they were already familiar with, but you could barely move.
You clutched onto your bag and took a deep inhale before taking a step downward into the camp. You finally stepped off the bus and onto the dusty ground, the sun already beating down on you.
The other campers all seemed to be in their own little cliques, already forming bonds and friendships. You, on the other hand, were alone. You pushed those thoughts aside and focused on taking in your surroundings.
The camp was surrounded by tall trees, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. The air was filled with the sounds of birds chirping and the distant laughter of other campers.
It was a peaceful and idyllic setting, one that immediately put you at some ease.
The camp was bustling with activity, kids of all ages running around, counselors shouting out instructions, and the sound of laughter filling the air. You took a deep breath and reminded yourself that this was going to be an amazing experience.
You walked yourself to the back of the bus, using your palm to wipe the sweat off of your forehead. You had only been there for a few seconds and you were already sweating.
You waited behind a few other kids trying to grab their bags, some kids brought suitcases while others just brought backpacks. You, along with your backpack, had brought a duffel bag, which your mother had written your name on.
You searched in the pile of bags for your own, hoping you actually brought it. But after a few minutes of searching and the bag not appearing, you started to feel a bit panicked as you kept on searching through the chaos.
Suddenly, you hear a voice from behind you. "Hey, are you looking for your bag?"
You turn around to see a boy with spikey red hair and a friendly smile.
You nod, relieved that someone is offering to help. "Yeah, I can't seem to find it," you replied, running a hand through your hair.
The boy chuckled. "I know the feeling. I've been searching for my bag for the past 10 minutes. How about we team up and find both of our bags together?"
You smile gratefully, "yeah, that's a good idea," you told him.
And together, you and the boy started to search through the pile of bags. It took a few minutes, but finally, you spotted your duffel bag. The most noticeable bag in the whole entire pile; due to your name being written in big sharpie letters, was wedged between two suitcases.
"Found it!" you exclaimed, pulling it out triumphantly. You grabbed your duffel bag and threw it over your shoulder, standing there for a moment to figure out your next move.
The boy cheered and high-fived you. "Nice job! Now let's find mine."
After a few more minutes of searching, the boy also finds his bag. However, this one was more stuck than yours, the two of you had to dig through the other suitcases and pull a few times to get it out.
"Phew," the boy said as he dragged his bag away from the big pile. "Thought we'd never find it."
You chuckled at the comment and nodded, "Thanks for helping me find my bag," you said sincerely.
"No problem, it was a team effort," the boy replied with a smile. "I'm Kirishima by the way."
"I'm Y/n, nice to meet you," you introduced yourself.
Kirishima looked back at the bus, "you were on that bus?"
You nodded, "around the middle."
Kirishima makes a silent 'oh' and nods. He then looks around as if searching for someone. "Wanna go to the registration tables?"
You raised your eyebrow in confusion, why would you need to register if you were already?
Kirishima then questions, "you're a new year, right?"
"I guess, yeah," you responded.
Kirishima took your bag from your hand without your consent, throwing it over his own shoulder. "I'll have to give you the best experience, let's go." He began to walk away, leaving you there standing in surprise.
"You don't have to hold my bag," you told him, quickly following behind.
He replied back, "It's your first year here, you have to get the experience."
You nodded and agreed with him, even if you wanted to hold your bag.
As you both approached the registration tables, you could feel your heart beating faster with anticipation. The camp counselor greeted the two of you with a warm smile and handed you the registration forms.
You started to filled out the information that hadn't been filled in online, such as if you can swim or activities you liked to do. The counselor started to explain something to Kirishima but you hadn't been listening.
"Here you go, Y/n," Kirishima said as he passed you a lanyard.
It had your name and cabin listed on it. You felt a pang of worry, hoping that you and Kirishima would be placed in the same cabin.
'Cabin Rabbit' it said in printed letters.
You looked up to Kirishima, "what'd you get?"
Kirishima then told you, "Bear, you?"
Your heart sank as you looked over at Kirishima, you knew it was stupid to think in the first place that two different genders would be placed in the same cabin. "Rabbit," you stated sadly.
You had finally made a friend and now you couldn't even spend time with him.
However, Kirishima looked perfectly fine and seemed to take the news in stride. "It's okay, we can still hang out during the day," Kirishima said with a reassuring smile, hoping to cheer you up.
You nodded, trying to hide your disappointment.
"I'll see you later, maybe we could eat lunch together?"
"Yeah, that sounds like a plan," you said with a smile.
Kirishima raised his hand for a fist bump and you hit it as he added an explosion to the end. "Bye," he shouted as he ran off to a group.
You watched as he reunited with his last year's friends, leaving you alone again. You hoped that this summer wasn't going to be as bad as you now assumed.
