~Alex's Pov~
The sun shone on the camp grounds lightly as clouds cleared and came once again. I looked down at the dark wood planks of the cabin's deck before turning around to look at John.
The freckles boy was holding his backpack straps tightly, his knuckles almost white, and looking around nervously. He was biting the inside of his cheek which I found was a habit he did when he was nervous.
I slung my own bag over my shoulder and took his hand. "Alright, Freckles. Let's go and meet the others." I said. John nodded and started walking.
Let explain what's going on. Every year the camp sends a group of six each night to an over night at an island alone. And this weekend us our turn. Me, John, Maria, Peggy, Lafayette, and Angelica. The part John was scared of was getting there. Since it was an island, we would have to canoe over there and John was terrified of falling in.
"It'll be alright. Angelica and Lafayette wont let you fall." I assured. We had agreed to that set up to make sure John didn't fall in.
John just nodded and kept walking with me. I gave him a reassuring squeeze as we walked across the feild and towards the group. Angelica waved us over and took John's bag, throwing it into their canoe.
"Alright, since everyone's here, lets go over the proper rules." A counsler, Ashley, said. She then stared explaining all the boring rules I had heard year over year again.
"And to keep in contact for emergencies, one member of your roup will carry this wakie talkie." She said, holding over the black device.
"Ill take it." Angelica said, taking the walkie talkie.
"Thats all i believe. Life vests on, get in your canoes, and we'll see you tommarow." She said, giving us a salute as we got into the bright red boats. I strapped my lifevest on and saw John struggle. I reached out and helped him. He smiled gratefully and a kissed his nose before sitting down in my own canoe.
I got in with Peggy and Maria, right in between the two girls. We were going to head out when Eliza ran over.
"Maria! You forgot your pillow!" She landed, obviously having ran here. Maria stood up "Oh! Thanks 'liza!" She hummed, kissing her girlfriends cheek. I looked away, that was awkward considering I had dating Eliza a bit this summer.... and a secret while before.
I looked at Peggy. It wouldn't be that easy to notice, but she gripped her pattle tight and looked at them. I couldn't point out day emotion but it was something.
Maria climbed in again and we started rowing into the water, a distance away from John's canoe.
"So. Alex. This is the first time we've gotten you alone simce you started dating John." Peggy said. She sounded like she was about to murder me, which I wouldn't put past her.
"So, we need to let you know something." She said, tehn Maria suddenly turned arlund and grabbed the collar of my shirt. She wasnt that tall or big but she had a grip like a tiger and her eyes blazed with confidence.
"You ever hurt John again and i will make sure that they wont find your body. Understand?" She said, venom dripping from her tone. I ouldnt help but be intimidated and nod.
"Glad thats settled!" Peggy said as Maria turned back around and paddled the boat as if nothing happened.
When we got there, Angelica, Lafayette, and John had already arrived and set up the tents. I got out, a little shook From that shovel talk the girls just gave me, but I decided not to mention it to John.
"Alright. Sun's going to be down soon so lets do stuff well we can." Angelica said, putting her hand abive her eyes to keep out the sun as she stared up at the sky.
"What did you have in mind?" Maria asked. Angelica smiled evily. "Man hunt."
"Oui! Et we can have non limetes except for the water se!" Lafayette said. Peggy squealed "Yes!"
"Who's going to be it?" I asked. Everyone looked around. Normally it would be a "ene minie mini mo" or one of those rhymes but those were always cheated.
"Rock paper sciccors?" Peggy suggested. Everyone else shrugged and agreed. We knew how this went, two looses and your out and all the losers go until two remain.
"Rock, paper scissors!" I said as me and Lafayette went. I won, then with Angelica I lost, then I beat Maria and so on.
Finally it was only Maria and Angelica left. Something I just found out, John was really good at rock paper scissors.
"Fuck!" Angelica yelled when she lost to Maria. John gasped and out a hand to his chest "Angelica! Language!" He said as if she had just murdered someone.
"Sorry Johnny boy." Angelica said, walking over and patting his head.
"Well! Im it! You all knoe the limits, no where except the water." She said, turning around to a big tree and closing her eyes, starting her count to 60.
I grabbed John's hand and ran through the forest with him, Peggy and Maria took hands and ran too, Lafayette started cooking a tree which seemed smart.
Once I got him and me a distance away, a turned around and studied the trees around us. They were big and looked stable....
"John, climb up that tree." I instructed. John looked at the tree I had pointed to and started climing without question. He was a good tree climber.
I stared after him and met him around the top of the tree on a big branch.
"This is exciting." He whispered. I nodded, looking down for any sign of the Schyler sister.
As the moments pass by without any disruptions, John shyly lays his head on my shoulder. I smile down at him and wrap my arm around his shoulders, pulling him closer to me.
We sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, or hours, who knows. I was just enjoying being with John.
We nearly fell out of the tree when a hand was placed on both me and John's shoulder. We spun around to see Peggy on the branch behind us.
"Sorry to spoil this lovely moment my gay friends! But you are both now it. So come assist me as we go hunt down Maria before sunset and win the game." She smiled. I sighed and got up, climbing down with John just above me, following me down the tree.
"Good job, Peggs. I mean i almost fell out of the tree, but now we can easily get just Maria!" John said optimistically.
Peggy smiled and grabbed John's arm, starting to run back the way we had come. I ran after them and we got back to the clearing to see Maria run out from the oppisite side with Angelica just behind her.
"Peggy! HELP ME!" Angelica yelled, she looked like she was going to collaspe as Maria ran. Peggy jumped a bit and started running towards Maria, John following. I, however, did not run and watched the scene. I sat next to Lafayette on a log, he was enjoying it as much as i was.
Angelica finally gave in and stopped running, falling to her knees and panting. Peggy tripped and landed in the mud, John jumped over Peggy's body and tagged Maria at last. Both kids stopped immediately and caught their breath.
"Good one, Johnny." Maria said, playfully punching him.
We all sat around the fire that Angelica and Lafayette had set up when the sun went down. Me and John sat together beside Peggy and Lafayette. Across from us Angelica and Maria shared a log.
"Then, as he turned around, the cold sharp knife made contact with his skin. He fell to the ground, but not before hearing Tag. Your'e it." Sngelica said, finishing her scary story. John was clutching my arm as he litsended.
"Woah. Spooky. Who's next?" Peggy asked, looking around. I had akready told one, and so had she.
"John, why dont tu try?" Lafayette suggested. "Yeah! John. Give it a shot!" Maria said.
John let go of my arm and shook his head. "No, no. Im no good at that type of thing. I doubt i even know any." He said.
"Give it a shot!" Peggy encouraged. John sighed. "Fine.... lemmie think." He mumbled, looking at he ground in concentration.
"Oh! Ive got one! I heard it at school a few years ago!" He said innocently. I sat back, expecting a short story about a doll or something like Angelica's.
"A few years ago, a nice small family lived in a small city by the sea. Every year they would go out and spend a week at their cottage a few hours away. The eldest child, James, decided he didn't want to go and stayed home. It was only him and his dog.
Now, his dog was a sweet golden retriever who usually slept through the day and went out at night so it's absence wouldn't be noticed. That night, James put food and water in the dog's dish for when it came out, changed into his pajamas, and went to his room.
Exhausted, he went to sleep.
He heard his dog come out from under his bed and jump on the bed. He fekt it give him a slobbery kiss and went to sleep with a smile on his face.
He woke up around 1am to hear Drip, Drip, Drip, ring through the house.
He got up and checked the bathroom for the source of the noise. Nothing.
He decided to deal with it later and went back to sleep.
The next night, he did his routine ,layed down and closed his eyes. He heard his dog then felt it give him a kiss on the cheek and went to sleep.
He woke up again to the noise of Drip, Drip, Drip. Annoyed, he got up and checked the kitchen for the noise. Nothing.
He gave up once again and went back to bed.
Then the third night, everything was the same. He fed the dog, laid down, got a goodnight kiss from his furry friend, and fell asleep.
When he heard the dripping noise for the third time, he got up angrily. He decided the only other place it could come from was the washing machine in the basement.
He walked down toward the door and walked in. He closed the door and took a step down the few stairs. Once in the basement, he felt some liquid fall and hit his head. Drip, Drip, Drip.
He held his breath and look up. There, hanging from the roof, was his dog. It's mangled body was still fresh with blood and dripping all over the floor.
He turned and looked at the door. There was something written on it.
"Dogs aren't the only thing that can kiss you at night."
When the family came back 3 days they wondered where their son and dog went. No one ever found their bodies, but in that old house some say you can still hear the Drip, Drip, Drip."
"John what the fuck."
