WOW I JUST GIT A BURST OF INSOIRATION IN THE SHOWER AND FINISHED THIS, YOUR WELCOME.
Concern hit Alex like a train when John ran out of the Mess Hall. What could have been on that letter to make him so upset that no one in his family could tell him in person? He said it was from his sister, maybr something happened to her? Like a pet passing away?
"John!" Peggy yelled after him standing up, though he didn't stop as he ran out.
"What's going on?" Eliza asked, looking up from her letter, unaware of the sitaution as she hadn't heard John leave. Bless her soul.
"I don't know! Alex! What happened?" Peggy demanded. Akex took a moment to collect his thoughts, was she blaming him?
"Don't ask me! He was reading a letter from his sister!" He said. "To be honest
i had no idea he had a sister 5 minutes ago!" He exclaimed. Peggy rolled her eyes.
"Well, are you going to go find him?" Peggy asked, crossing her arms. "You're the boyfriend."
Alex nodded quickly and stood up, only to be cut off by a loud scream.
Suddenly, an alarm went off and washinton's voice came on over the speaker, though it was hard to hear over the alarm
"Nothing to worry about, campers! Everyone head to your cabins and wait till someone comes around to check on you all." He said. Angelica screamed and everyone turned to see what she was looking at. A fire had started bruning by the kitchen and kids started frantically running away from it.
Peggy grabbed Maria's arm and pulled her out the door. Kids started running out and yelling, causing confused chaos.
Jesus Alex thought it's not like this is the first time this has happened.
Alex smiled fondly at such a memory but it dropped as he got up and walked calmly out of the building. Little kids stared at him as if to say Jesus he's so cool and nonchalant
Alex spotted Herc and Laf who had also walked out calmly. Lafayette walked over, looking around curiously.
"Alex, ou est John?" He asked. Alex shrugged, at this point he had no idea.
"Ah, Fuck!" Hercules cursed. Alex didn't need to look around to see what he was cursing at. It had started to rain. Of course it did, when did it not rain and ruin a planned out day?
Lafayette grabbed Alex and Hercules by the hand, pulling them both towards their cabin.
Not a we seconds later did it start pouring and soaking whoever was outside. Alex laughed as they can into the cabin, catching their breath and dripping wet.
"Honestly???? Of all the days!" Hec said frustrated. "Calm down, mon ami! It will pass! But Alexander. Tell us about Nous ami, John."
"Well...," Alex started
John's POV
Its raining.
Campers are running last me to their cabins. I've shoved that letter in my pocket so it may stay dry. But me, I'm soaking. I hardly care.
No one can tell I'm crying. I walk down the path, towards Washington's office, the mess hall, and the direction of my cabin.
I don't know where I'll end up, but my thoughts are occupied at the moment.
"John?" Someone says. I turn suddenly to see Washinton. He's also wet. He gestures me over hurriedly.
"Come to my office a moment." He said, putting an arm around my shoulders and bringing me towards his office.
When I walk into his office, it's bright and dry. He sits down by his desk and looks at me. I sit down on one of the two chair he has across from the desk. He has a sad expression as he slides a letter to me. I hesitate for a moment before taking it.
"John, your father called me.... he... he says your mother got into an accident a few days ago and sent you a letter. The one you got today." He says. I dig my hand into my pocket and pull out the sticker-covered envelope.
"Y-Yeah... my little sister wrote it." I say. God. I sound so pathetic. My voice is a bit cracked from the few minutes of crying. He looks at me in pity.
"Im sorry we couldnt get you that letter sooner, but we just got this one. You better open it." He says. I stare at him a moment before I look at the envelope in my hands.
Unlike the last letter, thsi one wasn't pink but a dark beigeish colour with no stickers or doodles. In the same neat writing, was once again his name and address. His hands shook as he opended it.
A picture fell out into the desk. I hesitantly oicked it up. It was an old one. In the picture a woman with blonde hair that was dyed brown at the ends smiled warmly as a little girl sat on her lap. She had curly blonde hair and grinned widely. Another boy, almost as tall as the women with black hair and a few feckles looked at the others with pure happiness, and lastly a boy stood there, curly hair and freckles, obviously laughing in the photo.
It was Mom, Patsy, James, and Me.
I swallowed seeing James in a photo looking so.... happy. I sucked in a breath and started dating the letter.
Dear John,
Mom went with the angels last night. She went in her sleep peacefully. She took the baby with her. I know you probably are going to be sad, but p,ease don't cry that much. Still have fun. Dad is sending me for the August half of summer. So I can see you in a week! Try to be strong.
They are having the funeral without both of us. Dad won't listen to anyone else about changing it, so maybe we can have our own funeral with flowers and stuff when we get back.
More bad news. We're moving in September. Dad already has a new date. She's pretty and looks nothing like mom.
I love you so so much.
Don't worry about me. I'm all packed and coming to see you soon.
Without James, were all each other have.
I love you, Jackie.
-Patsy
I let out a sob and covered my mouth with my hand. Though that didn't stop the tears from srteaming down my frecjled cheeks. Washington looked at me with sympathy.
"Your father called to say that your mother had passed away." He said, reaching over and putting a hand on my shoulder.
"I know this is hard to hear, but he also wants you yo stay at camp for the remaning 5 weeks." He said. I just nodded. I can hardly formulate a complete thought, I hardly trust myself to speak.
"Ill walk you back to your cabin." He said, standing up and grabbing an umbrella from the rack. It had the pattern of the American flag. I had one like that when I was younger. He walked to the door and I stood up, shoving the letters and photo in my pocket before following him.
He opended the umbrella and let me under it. I held back my son's and tried to keep in my gears. I need to be strong about this.
We walked in silence as he kept a steady hand on my shoulder. I stared at the ground, I don't even remember most the walk to the cabin, but we were there soon.
He looked at me as we stood on the steps. "If you need someone to talk to, me and Martha are always here." He said. I just nodded and turned, sucking in a deep breath before opening the door.
I stepped inside, giving Washington one last look before turning to look at the cabin. Lafayette and Herculues were on Herc's bunk and Alex was on his own above mine. They turned to look at me in confusion.
That's all I needed before I fell to my knees and started crying again. I'm weak, I know.
Alex quickly ran to my side, getting on his knees to be at my level.
"John? John are you alright?" He asked. I just shook my head. He helped me stand up and brought me over to my bunk. I sat down and he sat next to me. He rubbed my back as I cried.
Lafayette walked over and Hercules just watched from their bunk. This was so embarrassing but I couldn't stop.
"Whats wrong, sweetheart?" Alex whispered. I shakily reached in my pocjet and pulled out the second eltter, tossing it to him. He looked at me before opening the paper to read it.
Lafayette read over his shoulder. He let out a small gasp as he finished before Alex and sat on the other side of me, pulling me into a hug. When Alex finished he joined the hug. Herculues eventually garbebd the letter.
No one said anything.
I remember crying all night.
