Chapter Three: Rules and Regulations
"Alrighty, campers! Welcome to Camp Fandom! Who's ready to have some fun?" Counselor Kylie cheered, speaking through a microphone.
The crowd of campers cheered, screeched, and applauded. Every excited noise that could be made was made by these teens.
"We're going to explain a bit of how this summer is going to go!" Kylie passed the mic to Oliver.
"We're going to get competitive between the genres here at camp. I'm sure you've noticed that we've got six main genres here at camp. We've got mystery, adventure, action, realistic, sci-fi, and fantasy." Oliver boomed through the microphone. "We're to be holding some events where you can win your genre points. Whoever has the most by the end of the summer, wins! Easy enough, right?"
Holly couldn't help but lean over and whisper to Landon. "Sort of like Hogwarts house cup!"
He grinned at her enthusiasm, but her attention had turned back to the counselors in the middle of the stadium. Oliver handed the microphone back over to Kylie.
"There'll be a number activities to sign up for every week to keep yourself busy! We've got everything from fan fiction writing workshop to hunger games dodgeball to even normal camp activities like hiking!" Kylie exclaimed, her blonde hair swishing as she bounced with excitement. "There's plenty to do this summer, but if you find yourself with a break in your schedule we've got an arcade and theater across the camp that's open until nine." Kylie handed the microphone back to Oliver who changed the subject.
"Alright, campers! We've got to remember the rules of this camp. Number one: curfew is ten-thirty. Unless you're doing a night activity you can't be out past then. Number two: no fighting. Physical fights and bullying will not be permitted. Number three: no drugs, alcohol, or sex is permitted at camp. We want this to be a safe place for teens. Being caught with drugs, alcohol, or 'your pants down' will immediately get you sent packing." Oliver had a light hearted tone, but it was clear he wasn't joking. "Number four: do not cross camp boundaries. Especially do not go into the forest without a guide. For your own safety. Obey these rules and this summer will be great!"
Oliver continued to explain more about how the camp worked as well as some other rules of less importance, but Holly couldn't pay attention. Mostly because Stephanie had stopped paying attention.
"Curfew at ten-thirty? Are you kidding me? My grandma stays out later than that!" She complained.
"That's not too bad." Holly mumbled. She wasn't sure she cared for this Stephanie girl.
"What? Does your mom still expect you home before midnight?" Stephanie snapped, clearly upset about the rule.
"My mom does." Landon interjected.
"Well of course she does. Who wouldn't want to lock a cutie like you up and keep it for themselves. That's doesn't make it fair." Stephanie groaned.
"You don't have a problem with the other rules, do you?" Holly rolled her eyes. "Or are we going to have to listen to you complain all night?"
"I could care less about the drugs or sex. And it's not like I'm going to punch someone while I'm here." Stephanie's brown eyes showed her disinterest clearly. She faked a yawn.
"What about crossing camp boundaries? That seemed a little suspicious. I understand not going into the woods but the camp boundary stops halfway across the lake. That's a little strange, isn't it?" Landon pointed out, gesturing to his map.
He was right. There was a line all around the camp. It wove in and out of the forest naturally, but it stopped halfway across the lake at a tiny island in the middle.
"The lake's not that big." Landon wondered. "The camp technically owns the entire lake, so why stop halfway?"
"Who gives a crap?" Stephanie threw her head back with a groan. "I thought this camp was going to be cooler than to give us bedtimes."
"Relax," Holly commanded. "There are night activities, like the guy said. And we'll probably be exhausted by the day activities anyway so it doesn't really matter."
"Okay..." Stephanie mumbled, relaxing her shoulders and uncrossing her arms. "You're right. This is probably going to be really fun."
"Of course it is!" Holly exclaimed, trying not to show any dislike for Stephanie. "This is Camp Fandom! What could go wrong?"
Landon groaned. "Holly, you're not supposed to say stuff like that."
Holly wasn't listening. She had turned her attention back to the counselors who were finishing the assembly.
"Don't forget to check out this week's activities and to sign up. You can sign up outside the stadium. If you need anything don't forget to come to me or another counselor and we'll help you out. Have a great night, everybody!" Oliver finished off the assembly and the teens began to file out.
"So what should we sign up for?" Holly asked her best friend as they waited in the large crowd to get to the sign up table.
"Acting sounds like fun, creative writing-"
"Nature hike?" Holly suggested.
Landon stared at her. "Nature hike? Why would you want to do that?"
"I don't know. It could be fun. I used to go on hikes with my family when I was younger. It was just a suggestion."
Landon smiled at her. "If you want to, why not?"
"Really?"
"Like I said, why not?"
The nature hike wasn't a very popular idea so it wasn't long before they scribbled their names on this list. Holly scribbled her name under Samantha Collins and Landon wrote his under hers.
Little did they know how important this nature hike would be. Their summer was about to change with one little accident.
