Twenty-Three
Rays of sunlight shines through the cracks in the curtains of the infirmary as I pulled back the curtains to survey the outside.
Erica had left yesterday, so it was just me, waiting for Nurse Betty to say that I could go.
Nurse Betty wasn't here, she went to go check in with the Camp Counselor as he was injured last night? Wonder if that's what made the blood trails in the dirt.
Joshiah said that he looked like he was slashed by something, but we did have a lot of griffins so it might have been a run-in with an angered griffin.
The door opened as a tired Nurse Betty walked in, carrying rolls of bandages with specks of blood on them.
"Oh! You're still here?" She mumbled, "I mean students almost always leave when I am out of the room, but I mean... I'm not complaining, but it's less time wasted on their stupid injuries"
"Let me check your wound," Nurse Betty walks over to where I was standing, "Make sure that it's not reopening or anything"
"What happened to Olek? Y'know the Camp Counselor?" She drags me over to a chair and sits me down on, "I heard that he was slashed by a griffin?"
"Oh, he wouldn't say," She replies as she peels off the bandage slowly, "He seemed to be blocking something because the deepest wounds were on his hands and arms... Your wound isn't reopening so I guess you're free to go"
I stand up, "Uh, thanks I guess"
Nurse Betty turns back to her desk, "It's my job anyways"
I leave her alone in the infirmary as I make my way to my cabin. Joshiah came to visit me earlier today, talking about going to do archery with George and maybe Erica if she want. Jedi and Annie seems to be going on a walk, I saw them leave towards the trails.
Star? Pretty sure she's still sleeping.
The cabin is obviously in the same place, and everything was the same.
Almost.
I really don't know what set off my "There-is-something-wrong-here" radar, but it did, and the uneasiness stayed as I pushed open the door to the cabin.
Everything was the same. The cabin looked the same. Nothing was different other than the growing discomfort I was feeling.
Might I also add, Sixth Sense as a power isn't quite as simple as most people make it sound. There are different aspects and variants of it; Danger Intuition, Telepathy, Psychometry, Clairvoyance, Precognition, and Retrocognition are the most common ones.
Danger Intuition and Telepathy are pretty self-explanatory. Psychometry is the power to know facts or events about a person when interacting with an object associated with them. Clairvoyance, Future-sight basically. Precognition, foreknowledge about an event. Retrocognition, after-knowledge about an event that happened before present day, anywhere from years ago to seconds ago.
Oh me? Well, I think the best way to explain how my powers work is that they rotate. Sometimes I have this, sometimes I have that. And in this moment, I really don't know.
The cabin was reasonably messy, considering Joshiah and George live here, and they both don't bother to clean up anything.
One thing in particular stood out to me, it was a simple drawer on an ordinary nightstand. Something about it just... Called to me, I suppose.
I pulled it open.
There was a book, leather-bound. It looked old and dusty, but judging by the fingerprints, it was used recently.
I reached out to take it out of the drawer.
Something changes as soon as I come in contact with the book, maybe it's because everything is fuzzy now, or maybe it's because the colors of my surroundings are faded now.
I've gone back in time.
Or rather, my mind had.
The furniture is where it always was, except everything was clean and tidy and I don't have to clean up, unlike in present day, but that's not the point.
The book wasn't even in sight, so it makes no sense that I am here, because this in no way correlates to the book that I just found.
I pushed close the drawer that was open, and it closed. Weird. This wasn't supposed to happen.
The door to the cabin was wide open, so I guess it wanted me to go outside?
I mean I did it anyways, so who cares about what it wanted me to do.
The sun was half-obscured by the clouds, and flowers were blooming from the edges of the forest.
A bit further away from me, there was a group of people.
"-How was Dark Mage classes with Claire, Geoffrey?"
"Shut up, Eiran"
Two students were outside, the boy was wielding a staff, and the girl was leaning against a nearby tree, swinging her knife.
They acted like they couldn't see me... so how did I close the drawer when I can't interact with human beings here?
"You two cut it out, like, jeez" A third student walked out from behind them, "You two are always arguing. Like if Claire didn't exist, I swear you two would be bickering like old couples"
"SHUT UP, FIRIZT" The other two called in sync.
Firizt stuck out his tongue as the others glared at him, "No harm, no foul"
Eiran scoffs and turns around towards another cabin, "Carlos! Michia! Over here!"
Geoffrey glares at the dark-haired boy as they came over to the small group, he quickly turns away as Carlos looks back.
"Where's Ankiah and Bailey?"
Michia shrugs as Carlos stares attentively at the ground.
Eiran rolls her eyes as she reaches towards a brown bag on the ground, "Anyone seen my journal? I think I lost it"
"Seriously?" Firizt groans, "Did you like lose it yesterday and then we found it underneath a berry bush-"
"Cole? You good?"
I turned around and slapped whoever was stupid enough to sneak up on me in the face.
I didn't hit someone that could potentially kill me right?
"Ow- Jeez- What the heck is wrong with you today"
I opened one eye.
That...
That person definitely can't kill me.
"Didn't you learn to not sneak up on me you idiot?" I glared at George as he whacked me on my shoulder.
"I was worried about you," George snapped, "You were just standing here and you were staring at the forest... Looked like you were insane..."
George pauses, "You were having one of your episodes again, what did you come in contact with this time?" He asks as he flattens down my hair, "Like didn't YOU learn to not touch random things that might lead you to have a seizure?"
"Oh you're hilarious"
George rolls his eyes as he puts his hands on my shoulders and guides me towards a path off to the side.
"Uhhh, lad, you're going the wrong way," I pointed towards the mess hall, "The archery station is over there"
George sighs, "I'm not taking you to the archery station you dimwit, I found something to show you"
"Okay, okay, let me walk on my own," I push him away, "I have legs y'know"
George hops over a fallen log and continues deeper into the forest, "Since you have legs, hurry up, dude"
I hurried after him as he heads further away.
"Here, right here, no, over here you dummy" George pointed, "There, yes there, the burnt trees, the red ink or something"
"You reckon it's natural?" I asked, "Animals here do weird things"
"Definitely not," George shook his head, "I was out here last night, saw them being burnt down"
"And what were you doing out here?"
"Oh! Nothing," George brushes it off, "Thought I saw someone"
"What did they look like?"
He turned around sharply, "You think I ran into the Vex?"
"They call him the Vex now?" I rolled my eyes, "Ehh, weird name. Guess he doesn't talk at all so I could call him a idiot and he wouldn't say a thing"
"And so you say" The leaves rustled, as someone hopped down from the branches, "Cole"
"Shut the hell up" I paused, who in the world would be in a tree at this time? Defintely not someone trustworthy, that's for sure.
"Learn your manners," The person smiled, "After all, you know where that got you last time"
The person held out a hand, his black hair falling over his eyes, "Name's Link, and I want to propose a deal"
