2.17 Avatar day
Laying wide awake on Gumi's side, Asha felt her eyes droop with fatigue, despite the fact that she had been trying to sleep for hours now. Ever since her visions at the swamp, sleep had just not come easy for her. The words her parents said, the words the red head (who even was she?) said, and more importantly, the words Aang had said all echoing in her brain on repeat. She knows that it wasn't the real Aang, but it felt so real. Every time she thought about it brought heartache and tears to her eyes. She regrets telling him about her betrothing; then letting him just let her go. Regrets prying herself from tradition, even if the selfish part of her wanted nothing but freedom.
The blonde also didn't help, racking her brain just as often as the others. He used water to protect her, then continued to save her from the...Person attacking her. Was he supposed to help her? She didn't know. Honestly, she just wanted to forget the swamp entirely.
She glances over to watch Momo paw at Sokka's mouth, lips twitching when the boy shoots up, spitting out whatever Momo had been grabbing at.
"What are you doing in my mouth!" Sokka pauses as he watches Momo chew on the bubs absently. "Momo, you need to be a little more sensitive to my boundaries."
Momo chitters and jumps onto Sokka's face, Asha sitting up silently, looking around her as soft sound is heard. Immediately she is on the defense, ears straining to what she originally heard
"Ash-"
"Shh!" She shushes the water tribe boy, looking to a group of trees in front of her, she then glances to the boy sleeping on Appa, who slowly opens his eyes. They shoot open as galloping is clearly heard, glancing over to Asha who looks back to the trees. Everyone looks over though as a fire nation rhinoceros jumps from the trees, landing with a thud. More and more appear around them, until a final one emerges with a cruel looking soldier perched on top, his nose ring glimmering in the light.
"Give up! You're completely surrounded!" The man shouted, authoritative. The four rhinos, Asha counted, circled the kids as an archer pulled three flaming arrows on his bow, firing the arrows that pin Sokka, who was trying to caterpillar away. Asha jumps onto the stump he was on, pulling him out of the sleeping bag, and pulls out of the line of fire of more arrows.
"Come on, come on, come on!" Sokka yells, Asha helping him onto Gumi's saddle before handing Zulu to him, who allowed the raptor to bury herself in his arms.
Katara runs to Appa only to skid and look back to the stump she slept on. "My scrolls!" Asha whips back, looking to the stump. Jumping in front of Katara, waving her back to Appa, she runs to the stump. Twirling her staff, Asha bends an orb of air towards the soldier, knocking the soldier off the stump. Grabbing the box of scrolls, Asha holds it to her chest as the soldier behind her grabs his weapon, finally getting up.
Asha nearly falls as she feels the ground shake, looking over to find a tree pulled over, Aang air bending himself over the log. Wincing as he bats a stick of dynamite into the further forest, Asha runs to Gumi, box in hand as Katara gives her a thankful smile.
By the time Asha is ready to go, Aang is back on Appa, yelling for him to fly. Gumi follows as Appa takes flight. Tightening one side of the reigns, Gumi turns so he's upside down, flying over Appa. Sokka falls onto Appa's saddle as Asha passes the scrolls to Katara with no effort, lackluster almost as she takes Zulu back-- Gumi turning right side up as a fireball fires past them, the siblings yelling in terror as Asha grips her staff.
"Wait, my boomerang!" Sokka yells, looking over the saddle to the deserted campsite.
"I got it!" Asha turns Gumi, getting ready to fly into the war zone.
"There's no time! Asha we gotta go!" Katara yells to the girl who reluctantly turns back when a belt of fire roars past her and Gumi.
"Oh, I see. There's time to get your scrolls," He glares at Katara, "And time to get your staff, but no time for my boomerang?" Sokka seethes.
"That's correct!" Katara beams cheerfully, Asha furrowing her brows.
"Oh." Sokka sounds resigned, frowning deeply.
___
Appa and Gumi had landed on a cliff near a small walled up town, giving the group a chance to restock as they had left all their supplies back at the campsite. Said group was currently grabbing food from a nearby vendor, who seemed friendly enough.
"I'm really sorry about your boomerang, Sokka." Asha tiptoes as she approaches Sokka, afraid to set off his fiery temper. Katara and Aang were currently talking to a vendor, giving the two of them space, Sokka and Asha easily close in the same way Katara and Aang were.
"I feel like I've lost part of my identity. Imagine if Aang lost his arrows, or if Katara lost her...hair loopies? Or you stopped smiling?" Sokka looks up to Asha, who quickly looks away, frowning.
Standing, Sokka walks over to Katara, who hugs him as the merchant places the food in a basket on the counter.
"Here's your produce, ponytail guy."
"I used to be the boomerang guy..." Sokka says as he dejectedly picks up the basket, walking away.
"Hey, water tribe money." The merchant looks surprised as Katara pays him.
"I hope that's okay." She furrows her brow.
"So long as it's money. Have a nice Avatar Day!" The merchant closes his shop and begins to walks away.
"Avatar Day?" Aang turns to the merchant, brows raised.
"You guys are going to the festival, right?"
___
It almost like the fire day festival all over again with music playing, kids running around, laughing. Green banners fly by their suspended strings across the streets. Asha holds Zulu in her arms, Sokka holding Momo, both looking anxiously around the town.
"There's a holiday for the Avatar. Who knew?" Aang says as he looks around.
"Do you think there's a holiday for the Onsra, Asha?" Sokka asks looking to the girl who stares up, straight faced.
"I doubt it. There's not many people who actually know about the Onsra, most just give all the credit to the Avatar." She's solemn as she says it, frowning further.
"Doesn't that...tick you off?" Aang looked to Asha, hoping for a reaction other than the stone faced one he's getting. She only shrugs, "Not really. You get used to it."
"Look! They made a giant Kyoshi float." Katara exclaims, pointing to the main road where a large Kyoshi float was indeed riding past them.
"And here comes Avatar Roku." Sokka looks where his sister had pointed.
"Having a huge festival in your honor is great, but frankly, it's just nice to be appreciated." Aang said finally looking away from Asha to the floats.
"And it's nice to appreciate their deep-fried festival food," Sokka munches on a small cake, dripping grease.
"How- but you were- I thought...huh?!" Asha looks to Sokka flabbergasted, where he got that? She'll never know.
"Aang, look!" Katara yells.
Asha looks up, a huge Aang float passing them.
"That't biggest me I've ever seen." Aang smiles looking up. The group of four watch as a scantily clad, muscular man runs into the square with a lit torch in hand.
"Now a torch; that's a nice prop. It's bright dangerous, smells manly. But I'm not sure I could carry it off." Sokka says looking to the weapon, ignoring the man.
"With your luck, you'd trip and set you hair on fire." Asha huffs, eyes narrowing as she watches the man. "What's he even doing?"
The man lets out a battle cry while he holds the torch to the Kyoshi statue lighting it on fire, going to the Roku statue- only to do the same. The group of four looks up in horror as the town starts chanting, "Down with the Avatar!" over and over again.
With a final signal from the Mayor, the man throws the torch onto Aang's float, lighting it up. Katara and Asha are the first to react, water bending water from nearby barrels onto the floats. Smoke rolls from the now extinguished statues.
"Hey! That party-pooper's ruining Avatar Day!" An angry spectator spits out, turning to Asha and Katara.
Aang quickly takes the opportunity to air bend himself on top of his float. "That 'party-pooper' is my Onsra!" Aang yells, throwing his hat off in a move of anger, exposing himself.
"It's the Avatar himself!" The mayor steps back in surprise.
"It's going to kill us with its awesome Avatar powers!" The same spectator from earlier panics.
"No, I'm not, I-" Aang says as he calmly raises his hand, the crowd starting to get antsy.
"I suggest you leave. You're not welcome her, Avatar. As far as we're concerned the Onsra is the only savior." The mayor says, snootily turning his nose.
"And why isn't he allowed? Aang helps people just as much as I do, if not more." Asha snaps, glaring at the man.
"It's true!" Aang air bends down, standing next to Asha. "I'm on your side."
"I find that hard to swallow considering what you did to us in your past life. It was Avatar Kyoshi; she murdered our glorious leader, Chin the Great." The mayor accuses.
"You think that I...murdered someone..." Aang looks taken aback, trying to take in the information.
"We used to be a great society before you killed our leader. Now look at us!" An older man slurs, gesturing to himself.
Aang cringes in revulsion, grabbing Asha's hand for a sense of comfort. "Aang would never do something like that! No Avatar would! And it's not fair for you all to question his honor!" Asha snarled, spitting as she does.
"Let's tell her what we think of the Avatar's 'honor'." The spectator blows a raspberry and swings his butt in Asha's direction, the girl growling at him.
"If your worried about the Avatar's power, you haven't seen anything yet, so I suggest you shut your mouth before I give you something to be afraid off!" Asha barks, Aang pulling her close to him before she does something she'll regret. The spectator stepping back in fear. In all honesty, they should be more scared of her than Aang.
"Give me a chance to clear my name!" Aang turns to face to crowd, who currently is voicing their agreement to the spectator.
"The only way to prove your innocence is to stand trial." The mayor turns to Aang as he says it, sneering with disdain.
"I'll gladly stand trial."
"You'll have to follow all our rules. That includes paying bail." The man raises a brow.
"No problem!"
___
Asha rubs her temples as Aang stands in the cell before her with a stock closed around his neck. He looks to her with an apologetic smile, hoping to get one in return, but the girl just sighs.
"How was I supposed to know they wouldn't take water tribe money?"
The sun shines into the open courtyard that is Aang's cell, gleaming off of his head. The siblings stood, leaning on the bars, leaving space for Aang to be visible. The three watch as Asha paces in front of them, her arm across her chest, holding up the hand that rubs her temple.
"So some people don't like you. Big deal! There's a whole nation of fire benders who hate you. Now let's bust you out of here." Sokka turns from the pacing air bender to the trapped one as he says it.
"I can't."
"Sure you can! A little...swish,swish, swish! Air bending slice!...And we're on our way." Sokka says, acting out his depiction of an air bending slice."
"I think what 'Master Swish' is trying to say is that you and Asha are supposed to be out saving the world. You can't do that locked up in here." Katara offers disdainfully.
"I can't do that with people thinking I'm a murderer either. I need you guys to help prove my innocence," Aang says, looking to Asha who finally stops pacing.
"How're we gonna do that? The crime happened over three hundred years ago." Sokka waves a hand dismissively.
"That's fine, Sokka. For some reason, I guess Aang thought you were an expert detective, I thought so at least." Asha shrewdly says, playing to Aang's idea.
"Well, I guess I could be classified as such." The boy looks pleased by the praise.
"Yeah! Back home he was famous for solving the mystery of the missing seal jerky." Katara adds, playing along as well.
"Everyone wanted to blame it on a polar leopard, but I figure out that it was Old man Jarco wearing polar leopard boots. See, a real eight hundred pound polar leopard would have left much deeper tracks. Okay, I guess I am pretty good." Sokka brags, his sister holding her hand to her head with an exasperated motion, Aang using his hand to mock him. The bender looks to Asha as he does it, the girl giving a slight smile and soft giggle before recollecting herself.
"So you'll help me with my case?" Aang asks hopeful.
"Fine. But I'm gonna need some new props."
"Props?" Asha questions, watching Sokka momentarily walk off.
___
"Oh my-" Asha stares exasperated at Sokka, who now has a large hat perched on top of his head.
"I'm ready." Sokka stands proud, extending a magnifying glass out of his hat.
Asha rubs her temples yet again as the siblings do their own thing. She could tell before this even started that it was gonna be a long, long day. Even as the mayor had brought them to the temple, leaving Aang to his own devices she was getting cranky.
"This is the crime scene." The mayor gestures, Asha looking towards the cliff an indent catching her attention.
Pushing past Sokka and Katara, the air bender looking determined to get to the indent in the dirt. She crouches as the mayor approaches, he watches as Asha slowly and carefully tracing the footprint.
"This is the footprint of the killer, Kyoshi. It was at sunset three hundred and seventy years ago today that she emerged from the temple and struck down Chin the Great. After that tragic day, we built this statue to immortalize our great leader. Feel free to appreciate it." The mayor, they found out his name was Tong, gestures to a statue of an Earth kingdom warrior. It looks as if it were made out of a pink marble, shinning in the sunlight.
Mayor Tong steps out of the way, leaving the teens to their own devices. Sokka begins to walk around, almost in a Sherlock Holmes routine.
"This temple and this statue were cut from the same stone. And we know that the statue was built after Chin died." Sokka says as he runs a hand down the statue.
"And?" Asha says, walking over to the statue. She jumps up, and turns so she hangs upside down, her hair falling behind her head.
"If they were built at the same time, that means..." Katara answers, getting worked up as she does.
"Shh! I wanna solve it! That means Kyoshi never set foot in this temple." Sokka interrupts only to pick up where Katara left off.
"That's a big hole in the mayor's story, but it's not enough to prove Aang's innocence." Asha says still hanging upside.
"You're right. We need to go to Kyoshi island." Sokka says as he pulls a water piper out of thin air, blowing a few bubbles.
"Where'd you get that?" Katara asks her brother, looking at the pipe flabbergasted.
"I've learned not to ask." Asha looks to the water tribe girl, not even fazed by Sokka.
___
"I still don't get why I couldn't fly on Gumi." Asha sulks, sitting in Appa's saddle with Zulu on her lap. Her arms were crossed and her brows were furrowed as she glared at Katara, Sokka steering in front of her.
"Because when we first came here, we learned that the warriors here were super defensive, in a way. It took a while for them to become comfortable with us and Appa, by bringing you, their gonna be on the defense for a while. Adding a giant, fire breathing dragon to the mix would for sure set them over the edge." Katara says, looking to Asha with a hand outreached. She only gets a snort in response.
The trio looked to the town below, a bell clanging and getting their attention. As they land, Asha reels back into the saddle, a growing crowd approaching them. Biting her lip, the air bender slowly crawls over to the other side of the saddle with a burst of unknown confidence. Townspeople of all shapes and sizes surround Appa, cheering in excitement-- she assumes it's meant for Aang, who isn't there with them. She cringes as a man runs to the front of the crowd with cries of excitement, before starting to foam at the mouth; ultimately collapsing.
"Where's Aangy?!" A small girl, maybe eight, stomps her foot annoyed. Jumping off of the Bison, now more annoyed than shy, Asha lands beside Katara.
"Aangy? Does he know about this?" Asha snarks, laughing bitterly. The laugh shakes Katara, as normally Asha's laughs are kind and happy; this one was cynical and nasty.
"He couldn't be here, Koko." Katara offers, a lot nicer than Asha would've. The crowd behind the girl moaning in disappointment
"I wanted to see Aangy..." Koko sounds just as disappointed.
The crowd disperses, almost everyone ;leaving except an older man. He approaches them, Katara and Sokka smiling at him. Asha rolls her eyes and starts walking away.
"Oyagi! Aang is in jail. The town of Chin says he murdered their leader in a past life." Katara explains, grabbing onto Asha's collar without even looking. The air bender lets out a choked noise at the action.
"They say it was Kyoshi!" Sokka pops in, still wearing the hat with the pipe in his mouth.
"Kyoshi? That's crazy talk! I'll take you to her shrine. Maybe something there will help you clear her name."
The trio follow the man as he walks to the shrine, Katara dragging Asha by the collar (she had fallen to her butt, making Katara actively drag her) and Sokka beside the man.
"Zulu, Appa stay!" Asha calls.
"So, uh...What's Suki up to? Is she around?" Sokka asks, with his regular feigned casualness.
"What's Suki up to?" Asha mocks from behind him, her voice going deeper then high pitch to attempt a voice crack.
"Actually, she and the other warriors left to fight in the war. You kids had a big impact on Suki. She said you inspired her and she wanted to help change the world. " The man says.
"Oh, well...That's great." Sokka looks down.
"Oh! Oyagi, this is Asha. She's Aang's Onsra." Katara raised her arm, Asha raising with it. The air bender snorts. "Please excuse her, she's in a mood."
"Quite alright, it's understandable with the Avatar locked up. It's her natural instinct as the Onsra." The man chuckles as the approach the shrine. Katara drops Asha at the entrance, who gets up shortly after- dusting her sleeves.
"This temple was converted into a shrine to Kyoshi. The clerics tell us these relics are still connected to her spirit. That's her Kimono." Oyagi explains as Katara reaches to touch the kimono.
"She had exquisite taste."
"Please don't touch." He mutters quickly.
"These fans... They were her weapons, no?" Sokka muses with an affected voice.
"Also refrain from touching the fans."
"These were her boots, right? Her feet must've been enormous." Asha crouches to the boots, her hand hovering near, but not touching.
"The biggest of any Avatar!" Oyagi says proudly.
"Wait a minute...Big feet? What about Onsra Hisaki?" Asha turns quickly, her mind trying to connect dots.
"His were just as big as hers, if not bigger."
"Big feet? Little footprints...There's no way!" Asha says, holding a hand to her chin.
"Ahem! Special outfit hat and pipe? These things mean anything to you?" Sokka interrupts, pointing to his outfit as he does.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Please." Asha mocks, sarcasm dripping from her voice.
"Aha! There's no way Kyoshi could have made that footprint and therefore there is nothing linking her to the crime scene!" Sokka says dramatically.
"Brilliant, Sokka." Asha deadpans, smacking her forehead.
___
Aang sits cross legged in a circle, three other prisoners surrounding him. The sky is dressed in oranges and pinks as the sunsets, his trial coming up a lot sooner than he anticipated. Much sooner than he wanted.
"This girl you're talking about. She'll come around. You just gotta hang in there." One of the prisoners offers, Aang slipping out of his stocks, resting his elbows on top of it.
"You think so?" Aang asks hopefully.
"Sure!"
"Yeah!"
"You're a catch!"
"I don't know..." Aang looks down, uncertainty in his voice.
"Hey! You're smart, handsome, funny, not to mention, you're the Avatar. She's the Onsra. It's meant to be, even if she doesn't realize it." The same prisoner offer, Aang smiling.
"You guys are great!" The air bender compliments
"Don't be afraid to tell her how you feel. That may be the encouragement she needs." Another prisoner says, wiping a tear as he sniffles.
___
"This piece is called, 'the birth of Kyoshi '. It was painted at sunrise on the day this island was founded. Why, it was today, in fact, three hundred and seventy years ago."
"Three hundred and seventy years...wait, are you sure it was today?" Sokka spits out his pipe, shaking Oyagi by his lapels.
"Seeing how it's Kyoshi Day, yes, I'm sure." He throws Sokka back.
"This ceremony didn't take place at sunrise; it took place at sunset. Look at the shadows." Asha says, dragging her pointer and middle finger along the frame of the painting.
"They point east. So the sun must of been in the west." Katara says.
"So what?"
Sokka quickly shoves Katara to the side, "If Kyoshi was in the ceremony at sunset, she couldn't have been in Chin committing the crime. She-" Sokka starts, placing his pipe back in his mouth.
"She has an Alibi!" Asha interrupts, stone faced. She watches as Katara takes her brothers pipe, hitting him over the head with it.
___
"Honorable mayor, we've prepared a solid defense for the Avatar. We did an investigation and found some very strong evidence." Asha stands tall, arms behind her back, as she speaks with a formal tone. Sokka leans over to Aang and smiles, which he returns.
"Evidence?! Hmph! That's not how our court system works." Mayor Tong huffs, a smirk crossing his face.
Asha's stance falters, the two sibling gaping. "Then how can I prove my innocence?" Aang asks, shocked.
"Simple, I say what happened and then you say what happened and then I decide who's right." He smirks at their horrified faces. "That's why we call it justice. Because it's ''just us'." He laughs as he walks off.
"I hate that guy." Asha groans, sitting on the ledge of Aang's cell.
___
"Everyone loved Chin the Great because he was so great. The the Avatar showed up and killed him! And that's how it happened." Mayor Tong points to Aang, whose still in his stocks. Walking with a smirk, Mayor Tong passes the kids, who have to stop Asha from pouncing on him.
"The accused will now present it's arguments."
"Come on Aang. Just remember the evidence." Sokka whispers quietly.
"Right...Evidence. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm about to tell you what really happened. And I will prove it with facts. Fact number one...Uh..." Aang starts, stalling at first then completely blanking.
"The footprints!" Sokka prompts quietly.
"oh. Yeah...You see, I have very large feet." Aang says, nervously looking to the crowd. He looks down to his small feet, the crown looking unimpressed.
"Furthermore, your...temple matches your statue. But... I was in a painting at sunset...So there you have it! I'm not guilty!" Aang wraps up, with a big smile.
The crowd remains unimpressed as he looks to his friends, all but Asha giving him big smiles.
"He's dead." Sokka whispers to the two girls, still smiling.
___
"I'm sorry. You want me to do what?!" Asha shrieked in a hushed tone.
"Look, if we can get you in Aang in their clothes, maybe you can connect to their spirits and prove his innocence." Katara pushes, the other girl rolling her eyes as she takes the black kimono, stomping off.
___
"Mayor Tong, I'd like for the court to hear one last testimony." Katara claims, loud and proud.
"I've already told you! It's just me and the accused. You can't call any witnesses." Mayor Tong jumps up, his lip turned in an angry snarl.
"This isn't just any witness. I'm going to call...Avatar Kyoshi herself!" Katara gesture to Aang, who's clad in Kyoshi's own clothing, Asha beside him in a black kimono- beautiful gold lacing the edges. The two are painted in traditional face paint, Asha's hair in a tight bun with a head ornament front and center.
"So, are you sure this will work?" Aang whispers to Asha.
"Well, think about it. Maybe wearing Kyoshi's stuff will trigger something. I'm just here so Katara will have to owe me one." Asha snorts, her arms crossed.
"Well, I'm glad your here with me." Aang smiles at the girl, who blushes as lavish red as she attempts to stutter out a response, only for him to chuckle as she staggers.
"This is mockery of Chin law!" The mayor screeches, gesturing to the two.
"Please! If you could just wait one more second, I'm sure Kyoshi and Hisaki will be here." Katara pleads.
Looking back to Asha, whose currently leaning on one of the traditional blades of Hisaki, Aang holds a fan to his face, gulping as he faces the crowd.
"Hey, everybody. Avatar Kyoshi here..." He tries, his voice going up several octaves.
"This is ridiculous. For the murder of Chin the Great, this court finds the Avatar-" The mayor doesn't get to finish as a whirlwind appears around Asha and Aang, encasing them in their own shell.
As the shell disperses, Avatar Kyoshi herself is front and centre. Behind her is a tall man, black hair gelled back, revealing bright blue eyes. He's wearing the same kimono as Asha- yet he fills it out much better than the small girl did. He walks up to Avatar Kyoshi, sheathing the blade as she looks to the crowd.
"I killed Chin the Conqueror. A horrible tyrant, Chin was expanding his army to all corners of the continent. When they came to the neck of the peninsula where we lived, he demanded our immediate surrender. I warned him that I, nor my Onsra, would sit passively while he took our home, but he did not back down. On that day, we split from the mainland. " Avatar Kyoshi looks up to the crowd as she speaks.
"Avatar Kyoshi and I created Kyoshi island so our people could be safe from invaders, such as Chin. Our wife was expecting our first child and we would not stand by and risk their lives when we could do something then and there." Onsra Hisaki speaks, his voice deep, deeper than any Katara as ever heard.
The whirlwind reappears, leaving the teen Avatar and Onsra behind. Aang falls, Asha barely catching him as the two looked drained of energy.
"So...What just happened?" Aang looks to Katara as she helps him up, her brother helping Asha.
"Uhh...you two kind of confessed. Sorry." Katara gives a sad smile.
"And I find you guilty! Bring out the wheel of punishment!" Mayor Tong points to Aang, who frowns.
As the wheel is brought out, Asha can determine eight punishments; boiled in oil, torture machine, eaten by a bear, eaten by a shark, lie on a bed of spikes, burned alive, razor pit or community service.
"The accused will now spin the wheel of punishment to determine his sentence." The bailiff speaks in a deep monotone.
"Aang, are you sure about this?" Asha asks quietly, looking up to Aang.
"I said I would face justice, so I will." He looks up to wheel, reaching up and spinning it.
"Come on, torture machine!"
"Eaten by bears!"
"Razor pit!
"Community service! Please stop on community service!" Katara whispers, clutching her eyes tightly.
"Looks like it's boiled in oil." The bailiff says as the wheel comes to a stop.
The crowd cheers as Aang looks up, worried. Asha beside him looking just the same.
Spectators continue cheering as a firebomb bounces slowly, Asha noticing first as she tackles Aang to the ground, shielding him from the blast.
"We've come to claim this village for the fire lord! Now show me to your leader so I may...Dethrone him." The same soldier from earlier appears, still on top of a rhino.
"That's him over there!" A spectator yells, ratting out the mayor who quivers behind the wheel. He slowly peeks out from behind the wheel, looking for the Onsra. Said girl is busy, deflective fireballs with the katana, running off to do some more defense work.
"You! Avatar! Do something!" The mayor cowers, Aang moving to do anything, standing still as he watches over his Onsra.
"Gee, I'd love to help, but I'm supposed to be boiled in oil." Aang stares blankly, looking back at the man calmly.
"That's my boy!" Asha calls, pushing on her staff as a rhino rams into her.
Turning the wheel to community service, the Mayor panics, "There! Community service! Now serve our community and get rid of those rhinos!"
Aang smiles as he runs off, jumping in the air as he sheds Kyoshi's old clothing. The headdress is the only thing that remains as it sits proudly on his Aang's head as he runs to where Asha was losing to a rhino. Extending his arms, Aang jumps using the fans to throw off the rider. Aang smiles to Asha, who only nods a thank you.
"Rough Rhinos, to the town!" The soldier, Asha had decided he was a Colonel, called.
The rhinos and their riders set off, firing blazing arrows and blasts of fire towards the helpless buildings. A fire nation rider throws three sticks of dynamite into a hay wagon as he rides by, the wagon exploding, shaking the ground.
The two run across the junction, Aang still in the headdress and Asha in the kimono, both holding their past lives' weapons. Asha skids to a stop as a flaming arrow flies just before her. Turning to the archer, who glares at her. Holding the katana to her side, Asha charges to the archer (whose perched on top of a rhino), sliding under the rhino before they can collide. Standing behind the rhino, who can't turn as quickly, Asha jumps to the back of the rhino, swinging the katana, she sends a wave of air towards the archer, sending him flying into a building behind them.
"Crazy how great minds think alike, huh?" Aang approaches Asha, gesturing to the wall behind him; the colonel in a heap.
___
Aang reaches down for Asha's hand as confetti falls around them. He watches as her eyes watch, blankly staring at the colorful pieces float side to side. His brows furrow. Normally, the Asha he knew would be smiling, laughing at all the colors as her eyes light up with joy. Not this stone faced, serious girl. He frowns as his attention is drawn to the stage where Mayor Tong stands, he watches in silence giving Asha's hand a reassuring squeeze.
"From now on, we'll celebrate a new Avatar Day. In honor of the day Avatar Aang and Onsra Asha saved us from the Rough Rhino Invasion!" He cheers to the crowd, the group of four standing on stage. Aang holds a bowl, Katara and Sokka holding the same, all three looking to the contents; Asha leaning to look in Aang's.
"What is this?" Sokka grimaces, holding a piece of dough which melts in his hand.
"That's our new festival food; unfried dough. May we eat it and be reminded of how on this day the Avatar was not boiled in oil." Mayor Tong says, turning to Sokka then back to the crowd who cheers in excitement.
The four look at the dough uncertain, the three with bowls pick up a piece of dough.
"Happy Avatar Day, everyone." Katara says halfheartedly.
"Want one?" Aang mumbles as a piece of the dough hands out of his mouth, nudging the bowl to Asha.
"I'm good." Asha holds her hands up in mock surrender, Aang laughing at the action.
"This is by far the worst town we've ever been to."
