Chapter 7: Riverside to a Blossoming relationship

The five of them ended up in a pass of some sort. Empty cars, military stuff. "I heard reports that Riverside had held out." Louis spoke to the group. "Well unless anyone has a better plan, I say we head there." Zoey told them. Callie nodded waved everyone to follow her lead. "Come on. We all need to stick together." She talked through the radio. "Who's there today? And if so, what's the vibe we're going for right now?" Tina/Tanner answered for her. "It's Tanner today. He/They." Callie clicked her tongue. "Gotcha. Looks like we're getting through to Riverside."

Francis looked at her confused about what the person behind the radio said. "What?" Callie turned to him and spoke through gritted teeth. "Francis, din uvidende rotte. Tina, or Tanner, is Genderfluid." Zoey shot down a boomer that was in the way. "Oh, is that why you were kind of afraid of mentioning things like that?" She obviously nodded in agreement. "Well yeah. My whole group as a combined family is quite diverse on its own. Hell, one of them was a former juvenile kid."

(Flashback)

Callie was 13 and she was volunteering at the local juvenile center in the cafeteria. She helped serve food. "Sometimes I wonder if there is any good in these kids at all." She spoke to the regular lunch person. The one on duty, Carol, smiles at her. "I know there is good in some of them. They just need a little convincing is all." Callie then eyes the one in the corner, filing her nails. "That there is one of our recent ones, her name is Jemma Von Miller. Got caught fighting other kids in the alleyway. I'll tell you, she is one tough cookie."

Callie sees her finishing up and coming back for seconds. Jemma blew some hair from her face. "More, I guess." Callie gave her the same thing she got earlier. It would be fine if she at least tried to make friends with her. "I'm Callie. Callie Hansen?" She hesitantly greeted. Jem just scoffed. "Why would you be friends with a downer? No one cares for downers." She shrugged. "I don't know why you're interesting. You just are."

"Hey Jem, don't hold up the line." One of the weaker people sneered. She pretends to lunge at them and the kid cowards off back to his table. Jem just chuckled. "People just call me Jem for short. Seems fitting since I liked the Jem cartoon when it was airing," Callie smiles and shakes her hand. Jemma shakes it back. "You know what? You caught me in a good mood. I'll give you a chance when I get out in 9 months."

(End.)

The survivors make it out of the highway tunnel and outside again. Bill looked up and sees the next saferoom. "Up here." He called to them all and went up the slanted hill. Louis threw a pipe bomb to distract the zombies. They all make it inside before the bomb explodes. "Killer." Zoey fixed her ponytail and got some more ammo. Callie notices the overflow pipes. "Huh. These must be the overflow pipes connecting to Riverside." Francis looked at her like she was some geek. "How the hell do you know that?" Louis backed her up. "Yeah. Interesting true story. In 1975, the local township-" he began before Francis dismissed him. "You know what? I just realized that I don't care. Lead on."

The five began going through the sewer. Bill questioned Callie more about this angel story. "This Angel would always be chosen to give blessing to those in their time of need, even serving someone they guard with their life. If too attached and that person ends up gone, they are left without a purpose." Everyone grabs onto new weapons that were around before getting to a lowering bridge. Louis presses the button and they were on their way. Callie began to remember the first time that the tale was told to her

All snuggled up in her bed, dressed in her favorite feetie pajamas. Her father sitting at the end of her bed, holding out a book full of pictures and caricatures of this angel. She had blonde hair, these beautiful eyes that could be any color that the receiver of said powers had. The golden wreath headdress, and a beautiful white dress with gorgeous wings. Callie kept their focus as they make it through into a train cart. "Into the caboose." Zoey called as Francis and Callie make a laugh about it. The two of them look at each other. "I guess two rotten minds do think alike?"

After patching up and getting more ammo for their guns, Callie takes off the metal bar and then kicks the door open. She throws a Molotov at some zombies in a group. Louis pointed to a sign that was heading towards Riverside. Keeping on the path, they make it to a cabin house. "Nice.. a cabin in the middle of nowhere. I know how this movie ends." Ransacking it, Callie finds them some food that could at least last them a little while longer. Francis picked up a Gasoline canister and threw it out at the horde coming for them and shoots it, making it light on fire.

Callie makes it around the fire before seeing a hunter come towards them. She shoots it while it jumped at her and the Hunter lands at her feet dead. They pass through an ambulance and Zoey grabbed some pills. "Safe house up ahead! Hopefully." She called out. "Must be. There's lights on in that church." Louis told them before calling out for anyone. "Hello?!" A man who sounded very distressed and wary of his situation he had felt surprised. "Who's there? I can hear you out there!" They make it inside and just stand outside the door. Callie placed a hand on the handle and shakes it. "I'm gonna start ringing this church bell if you don't say something!" The man shouted at them.

Francis changed up his voice to try and fool him. "We're cops! Open up." "YOU DONT SOUND LIKE COPS!" Louis shakes his head irritated. "Sir, please! We are not infected." The man got fearful from the other side. "Nonono! No, no, you said that last time! You said that last time! I trusted you last time." Francis turned to Louis and sighs. "I don't think that cop thing worked." Bill slapped his forehead. "Son, we are immune, we're tired and there's infected in the damn woods. Now cut out the shit and let us in!" "NO! No! My safehouse! I've got the bell, you stay the hell out!"

Callie griped as she cleaned her machete. "I'm sure this guy is nuttier than candy bar shit." "I heard that!!" The man remarked as Zoey felt confused at this stupid argument. "You're not just gonna open the door? Really?" The strange man puts a hand on the rope connected to the church bell. "Only when you can prove you are immune. And.. and I know just how to do it!" Francis groaned as Callie shouted "Jeg tror ikke på det her! vi argumenterer for vores liv herude med en mental idiot!" ("I don't believe this! we are arguing for our lives out here with a mental moron!") The man felt offended. "I am not a mental moron!!" He began to laugh slowly. "I can make you leave. Don't believe me? HOW ABOUT NOW?!" He began ringing the bell as everyone takes over each other. "Ding dong! DING DONG!! Dinner's served! COME AND GET IT!!"

Louis turned to the door. "Sir, if one of us gets killed out here, I am gonna shoot my way in there and beat you to death with my gun!" "Well.. you'll have to be alive to do that!" Zombies began coming towards them and they begin shooting. A boomer comes through the side door and Francis shoved it back. "I got your six!" Callie finished it off for him. Zoey turned to the door. "You know, we can MAKE you open the god damn door." The man remarked back at her. "Can you really?!" Francis stood on the other side. "If we live through this, I'm gonna tear that bell down and shove it up your ass!" He yelled to the door. "Trying to intimidate me?! Your words mean shit to me!"

A smoker comes through the window and was about to wrap someone up before Zoey guns it down. "Got it." "Good shot!" Callie got out a pipebomb and handed it to Louis. He threw it in the horde shouting "Grenade!" As it exploded, the ringing bell stopped. "Dead." A hurt voice comes from the other side of the door. Growls, snarls, the man overturned. "I don't see nothing." Callie looked out on the horizon. "I'm gonna freaking kill that guy." Francis got ready to fight but she holds him back. "Wait!" The man was repeating better safe than sorry as he was turning into a zombie.

Zoey had a hand on the door handle looking at everyone. As she opened the door, Francis began unloading his Ammo on the man that became a hunter. Callie had a hold on him after it was already dead. "Francis!!" She made him turn to her as he gave a surprised look. Not even his ex girlfriend had the balls to keep him back from doing damage even further. "Sweatshirt wearing little wuss." He muttered before they all got In and the door shut as Bill sighed in relief. "Hallelujah."
