Nikolai doesn't totally agree with war but he had to go to escape his home life and the wrath of Stalin(I tell you about this later) so he kinda needed to go.So the first place Nikolai went to with the army was France and at the time they were getting rid of the Germans from France.Then he went on many missions for example;invaded German,Italy,Poland and many more countries.He succeeds these missions,he has alot of medals but he hasn't got the medal of honour.
And yes his vodka did not help during the war but he was still allowed to fight for some reason.So pretty much everyday Nikolai was drunk and escaped death alot.
