Chapter 9

Calista straightened her shoulders and sent a worried look to Janelle who took too deep of a breath and began coughing. Sebastian crossed his arms and waited for her to finish before continuing their conversation.

"Who do you need to get revenge against?" Sebastian asked.

Calista looked away and lightly slapped her mouth before turning back to the blonde Adonis that Janelle was practically drooling over.

"Me? Want revenge?" Calista asked innocently.

"Yes. I heard you clear as day. You want revenge."

"Right, I want revenge against the tabloids that said I was a murderer."

"Yeah, she was telling me just that."  Janelle nodded. "As soon as she's better. She wants revenge. Big time. Major revenge."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed as he stepped toward them and Calista forced herself not to run away.

"Don't waste your time with revenge against tabloids, Calista. You just need to focus on getting better. I've already taken care of the reporters who wrote those articles mentioning you."

"How?" Calista asked.

"I had them fired. The Dover name will not be sullied by anyone."

Janelle leaned into Calista. "I thought he was going to say he bought the tabloid and fired the writers."

Sebastian smirked. "For one of the magazines, I did."

Janelle's mouth fell open. "Whoa...you're like that guy from Fifty Shades of Gray."

Calista poked her friend in the ribs but Janelle continued. "Are you also into BSDM?"

Calista gasped and Sebastian laughed. Calista shook her head and Janelle covered her mouth, realizing she was supposed to be working. She gave a toothy smile to Sebastian. "Sorry. I don't really have a filter. My mouth constantly gets me into trouble."

"I can see that," Sebastian said. "So, how do you two know one another?"

"Huh?" Janelle's eyes widened and she looked over to Calista who also seemed surprised.

"We just met," Calista said.

The temperature seemed to lower in the room as Sebastian sighed "Is that so?"

"Yes. Why would you think otherwise?"

"The doctor said you may eventually get your memory back," Sebastian said. "Just to be clear, I feel as though I should remind you of the house rules."

"House rules?" Calista repeated.

"Yes, the house rules. There are only a few, but the most important one is to be honest. Would you mind stepping out for a moment? I'd like to talk to my sister alone," Sebastian said to Janelle.

Janelle looked from her friend to Sebastian Dover, the man she'd only ever seen on magazine covers. Calista gave a slight shake of her head and Janelle nodded.

"I'm sorry, but I really need to check her blood pressure right now," Janelle said.

Sebastian raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

"Yes, it's a very important thing for memory loss patients to get their blood pressure taken." Janelle began pulling out medical equipment from a work case.

Sebastian closed the distance between him and Calista. She was sitting on the bed looking up at him. He placed a hand on her cheek, almost a caress, his thumb stroked the spot just below her right eye.

"I believe that the moment one person lies to another person, whether it be outright or by omission, then the trust between the two is broken. You're not lying to me, are you...sister?" His words were softly spoken but they shook Calista to the core.

"N-no," she whispered.

"Very well. I'll talk to you later."

Both women held their breath as Sebastian exited the room, the door clicking closed behind him.

"Oh that scared me," Janelle whispered. "Who would have thought that such a handsome man could be so scary? Do you think he knows you're an imposter?"

Calista stared at the door, a hand on her cheek where Sebastian had touched her. "No, even if he is rich he wouldn't spend so much money trying to get me well."

"The way he touched you...do you think he and his sister were...you know..."

Calista grimaced. "That would be gross."

"Well they weren't blood related, remember?"

"Still it's morally wrong and probably illegal."

Janelle shrugged. "Love makes you do crazy things."

A sudden image of her husband, Adam, came to Calista's mind. She wondered how much he loved this Yvonne woman to kill his wife. Try to kill his wife, she corrected herself.

"I'm telling you, something's fishy about him," Janelle said. "And did you see the way he stared at you? Like he was imagining you had your clothes off or something."

Calista rolled her eyes. "Don't you mean that's the way you were staring at him?"

"True."

"Janelle, Sebastian Dover has been very nice to me while thinking I'm his sister. So has his assistant Roger. I don't think anything weird was going on between Calista and Sebastian."

"But what if there was? What would you do if one morning you wake up and that handsome stud muffin is in bed with you?"

"I'm married!"

"Oh please. Your husband is with another woman right now. Even before you went missing, he was always with her. You shouldn't care about him," Janelle said.

"I just need to buy some time until I can figure out whether or not Adam tried to kill me."

"And what if he did?" Janelle asked.

"Then...then he needs to be held accountable for his actions," Calista said.

"And what if the real Calista Dover shows up and wants her life back?" Janelle asked.

"I told you...they think I have amnesia. I'll just use that card."

"You're playing with fire. You know that, right?" Janelle asked.

"I know but what choice do I have? If my husband tried to kill me...wouldn't he try again? I have no proof at this point."

"Do you have a plan?"

"I helped put him through law school so first I'm going to ruin his career."  Calista smiled.

"Ohh you're more vicious than I thought. I like it." Janelle laughed. "I just hope you know what you're doing."

"You were able to transfer all her shares to me?" Sebastian asked.

"Yes, there weren't very many but it tipped you as being the majority holder," Roger said. They were both in his study. "It's a good thing Ms. Dover returned and the judge granted you conservatorship while she was in the hospital. Her will had them going to some of our leading competitors. Why do you think she would have done that?"

"Because she's Calista," Sebastian answered.

"So now what do we do, sir?"

Sebastian closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of the nose. "We continue playing this game with her. In the meantime...you do as I just ordered."

"It may take some time," Roger reminded him.

"That's fine. As long as he can find my sister...cost isn't a problem."

Roger sighed, "This is all so sudden but medical tests don't lie."

"It's my fault for waiting so long to check. I was sure she was—"

"Don't blame yourself, sir. You were in an emotionally vulnerable state," Roger said. "So...what do we do with the woman upstairs in the meantime?"

Sebastian tapped his fingers against his desk. "We'll play along until we no longer need her anymore."

"And then?"

"We get rid of her."
