Chapter 42

Sebastian tried calling Calista for the eighth time that morning.

Why wasn't she answering her phone?

He walked closer to his sister's hospital room to see Roger talking with Calista through the glass window embedded into the door. He quietly listened in for a moment before opening the door and entering. Both suddenly became quiet.

"Is something going on?" Sebastian asked.

Roger gave Calista a resigned look. "She wants to talk to Calista. Calista Hargrove that is."

Sebastian looked from one to the other before giving them a wry smile. "Obviously you meant Calista Hargrove. If she wanted to talk to herself, she could just look into a mirror."

Calista ignored his attempt at a joke. She turned to Roger and asked, "Were you able to find her?"

"This isn't something that Roger needs to tell you," Sebastian interrupted. "I'll handle Calista Hargrove."

"Oh? And how exactly will you handle her?" his sister asked, wincing as a tremor of pain vibrated across her back.

"Are you jealous?" Sebastian frowned.

"Should I be?"

"No," he answered.

Calista felt herself relax.

Sebastian continued, "You're my sister. Of course you shouldn't be jealous of a woman I might date."

"She's my sister!" Calista hissed.

"But she's not my sister," Sebastian said quickly. "I have some pressing matters to take care of so get some rest. Roger, follow me."

They heard Calista cursing as they left her room.

"You would never know she'd just been stabbed," Sebastian muttered.

"I noticed," Roger said. "Antagonizing her like that isn't good for her."

"Letting her live in a fantasy world isn't either."

Roger felt his face heat but he nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry, sir. I'm just used to looking out for her since we were kids."

"I want you to find Ms. Hargrove. I need to make sure she's safe."

"Do you really like her that much? Why? I'm sorry for asking, but is it because she looks like your sister?"

Sebastian shook his head. "Not at all. At first, I thought she was Calista. Then I was upset that she may have been trying to deceive me. I soon realized she was a good person and after finding out about what she's going through, I feel slightly bad for her. Then I was curious."

"And now?"

Sebastian gave him a thoughtful look. "Now? I guess you could still say I'm curious. Really curious."

"Don't worry, sir. I'll find her," Roger said.

"I have no doubt about that, Roger. No doubt at all."

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Detective Mark Jessup asked, looking around them. He had Bree talking up the officer that was in charge of the criminals in the holding cell.

Calista Hargrove nodded. "Don't worry. I have the phone ready." She was wearing a dark ball cap and sunglasses. The phone Mark had given her was slightly showing itself in the chest pocket of the jacket she was wearing.

"Just don't let him know what you're doing or he won't talk," Mark warned her, pulling the cap downward.

Calista quickly let loose a deep breath and said a quick mental prayer before stepping forward to the cell her husband, Adam was being held in. Just like Mark told her, he was alone.

"Adam?" Her voice sounded softer than she intended. She cleared her throat, placing her hands around the steel bars that caged hum and repeated his name, "Adam?"

Dark bloodshot eyes stared back at her.

"I-it's me...Calista."

His eyes widened and he stood up. "Calista?" He walked over to her and placed his hands over hers. "How did you get here?"

She pulled her hands out from beneath his, not missing his look of confusion.

"I needed to see you, Adam. I know why you're here."

"It's not what you think, Calista. I didn't-not for one moment- think she was you. Not once."

Calista thought of how he had slept with Calista Dover. Her heart ached.

"So why did you sleep with her?"

His mouth twitched. "W-what?"

"Why. Did. You. Sleep. With. Her?"

"I didn't. Did you meet with her? How do you know she isn't lying? I mean...how could you believe her? I'm your husband, Calista. I love you."

She stared at the man she thought she loved. No, that wasn't true. She did love him. She had loved him, anyway.

"How could I have been so blind?" she whispered.

"What did she tell you? She's a liar. She wanted me to think she was you. She-"

"She showed me pictures. You slept with her. Don't deny it."

He turned away from her for a moment, nervously wiping at his lips. Calista watched him pace the small cell, attempting to think up his next lie.

"I always thought you and I were forever, Adam."

He turned back to her, his face a picture of anguish. " We are forever. I love you. She meant nothing to me. It was just a one time deal. I'll never do it again...just give me another chance."

"But she wasn't a one time thing, was she? Is this why you tried to kill me?"

"What?"

"Even if you stopped loving me, I would've understood. You didn't have to go that far."

"I didn't! I wouldn't. Why would I? I told you, I love you! Dammit, isn't enough that I just lost Mom? Now I'm supposed to lose you too? Believe me. Stay with me. I didn't try to hurt you. That's not me."

"Then why did you try killing Calista Dover?"

"I didn't want to kill her. I just wanted to expose her."

"Why?"

"Because of her you weren't by my side anymore. How am I supposed to believe that you'll come back to me when you're living the life of a rich woman?"

"Because I'm your wife!"

"You say that while you're accusing me of trying to murder you," he sneered.

"If you didn't try and kill me, then who did?"

"If I tell you, would you believe me?" he asked.

"Adam-"

"If the truth meant hurting me, wouldn't you believe me?" Adam whispered.

"If you know...tell me."

Adam pressed himself up against the bars. "Remember this is proof that I love you."

"Just tell me! Who tried having me killed? Who hired Trey Dawson to murder me?"

Adam bowed his head and answered, "My father."

Calista let the information sink in before turning away. She needed to tell Mark and let him have the phone back.

"Why?"

He looked away, refusing to explain. She turned to walk away.

"Calista!" Adam shouted. "Shouldn't you forgive me now? Don't you have anything else to say to me? Like how you believe me?"

Calista nodded. "There is one more thing I want to say to you."

She turned her head over her shoulder as a single tear slid down her cheek.

"Yes?" Adam was gripping the bars as he waited for her forgiveness.

"I want a divorce."
