Chapter 38
Mitchell Jessup had a lifetime of sins against him. He'd once lifted an apple and ate it at the grocery store. He lied on his taxes. And the greatest sin of all...he had cheated on his wife Rita. At the time, he could justify everything. He was hungry and the apples were overpriced. He had to cheat on his taxes...everyone else was doing it. And hadn't Rita cheated on him first?
He closed his eyes as guilt threatened to suffocate him. He thought the past was in the past. That Anthony Dover would no longer be a burden to him anymore. But like a bad case of herpes, he was back. How in the hell had he adopted his granddaughter? Both he and Anthony were too old to play games of rivalry.
Mitchell sighed as he thought of his grandson Mark, determined to find the truth. He wondered if he should be worried about it.
"I'm too damned old to be worried," he muttered to himself as a nurse knocked on the door before entering to check his vitals.
Once he signed the paperwork for the twins, he had put their existence behind him. No. This was no longer his fight. No longer his problem. At least that's what he'd keep telling himself. Let the young folk figure out whatever problems the past may have created.
She could hear them arguing but she refused to open her eyes. Calista Hargrove kept her eyes closed as Sebastian and Calista Dover argued.
"What the hell did you tell her?" Sebastian's voice was angry but controlled.
"Why do you sound so worried?" his sister smirked. "Afraid of what I told our sleeping beauty over there?"
"We both know you live in your own reality, Calista. I won't have you dragging someone else in with you."
"Not even if she looks exactly like me? I hate to break it to you but you already brought her into my world. The moment you claimed her as family. Now, tell me the truth, Sebastian. When she was getting the plastic surgery, did you purposely make her to look like me?"
"That's enough!"
Her laughter filled the air. "Is it? Sebastian Dover what are you going to do now? You gonna keep her? Her husband's been cheating on her. I can't imagine that she'll stay with him. Are you going to get rid of me and keep her around? Are you going to have Roger take care of me? Do you honestly think I'll let you do that?"
"You're insane," he whispered.
"Insanely jealous--"
"Get out. I told you before that I won't stand for this. When you're ready to be my sister, I'll be here. Otherwise--"
"Otherwise, you'll what? I hold all the cards here. One slip of the tongue and you and your company will be nothing."
"That's your company too. Or did you forget?"
Again her laughter danced around the room. "How could I? Fine. I'll leave for now but watch yourself. I won't let you replace me. She can keep pretending to be me. I actually find this quite amusing. Maybe I'll get plastic surgery to look like her. Ahh...no. Perhaps not. According to her, someone's trying to kill her too."
"Do you really believe someone's out to get you?" Sebastian asked softly, worry lacing his voice.
"Don't worry. I'm a big girl. And unlike my precious sister, I can take care of myself."
"Sister?"
"Don't tell me you didn't know. Your fake sister is my real sister. Fraternal twins separated at birth. And you, always acting like God, had her altered to look just like me. I couldn't make this up even if I was writing a soap opera."
"She's your sister? How did you find this out?"
"That's my secret but I'll leave you two for now. What a shame, Sebastian. She's still off-limits."
A phone ringing interrupted them. It was Calista Hargrove's phone. She slowly opened her eyes. Calista Dover smiled and waved. "I'll be leaving for now, but be careful." She looked at Sebastian, "You never know who you can trust."
She gave a mocking salute to her brother before heading to the door.
"Stay in touch with me. I'm going to get everything cleared up in a week so you can return so get your mind on straight."
She waved as she continued to walk away.
Calista picked up her phone, ignoring Sebastian's look of worry. It was Adam.
"Don't answer it," Sebastian whispered. "We need to talk."
She nodded. "We probably do but I'm not sure if I can deal with whatever it is we need to talk about."
He started to speak again but she pressed the green button on her phone that allowed her to answer the call, "H-hello?"
"Calista? Calista, you're not going to believe this," Adam's voice choked in emotion as he explained what had happened with his mother. "I-I'm at the police station. I'm sorry to ask this, but do you think you can come over? I can't do this alone. I need you."
Without thinking, she agreed and disconnected the call.
"Don't go," Sebastian whispered. "It's not safe for you to be alone."
"I have to go. He needs me."
"Didn't you hear Calista? She said he was cheating on you!" Sebastian reminded her.
She bit her bottom lip, willing herself not to cry. "That's true but kissing you was cheating too, wasn't it? I guess we're even."
"That's hardly--"
"I have to go." She shook off her dizziness before standing up. "I'll be at the police station so don't worry. I doubt anyone will try anything."
Sebastian knew he couldn't stop her. "Both of you are abandoning me today."
"I'm not leaving you."
"Yes, you-"
"I was never yours to begin with," Calista said softly. "I was just a stand-in sister, remember? It's not like you really cared about me."
"How could you say that? You know-"
"I'm sorry, but Adam's waiting for me."
She left before she said anything she would regret. She had already kissed him and she was still reeling from the news that Calista Dover was her sister and that Adam had cheated on her.
Maybe her so-called sister was lying?
Calista knew she probably wasn't but she wanted to hang onto that truth. Besides, what right did she have to get upset with him after she had willingly kissed Sebastian Dover?
Adam was sitting alone in the corridor outside the doorway to the city morgue. His eyes were red from crying and he looked pale and distraught. When he saw Calista, he stood up and pulled her into a hug.
"Thank you for coming. I didn't know who else to call. Dad's still in the hospital and I can't tell him because who knows what the shock will do to him."
"Did you call Yvonne?" Calista asked.
Adam looked taken aback. "No. Why would I call Yvonne? You're my wife, Calista. Of course I'd call you."
"Adam, you know I'm supposed to be Calista Dover. If someone saw me acting like this with you, it'd be suspicious. I'm sorry--"
He shook his head in disbelief, anger bubbling up inside him.
"No, you're not sorry. You think you're better off pretending to be someone you're not. You think someone is trying to kill you. Maybe you're right." He lifted both hands and quickly placed them around her throat. Calista pushed at him but his hands continued to squeeze.
"What the hell are you doing?" Detective Mark Jessup shouted from down the corridor, his legs propelling him forward to Adam and Calista.
Adam felt Mark's fist before he saw him. Calista pushed him away and began coughing, trying to breathe in some air. Mark continued to pummel Adam.
"You're doing this at the police station, asshole? You got a death wish?" Mark shouted.
"St-stop!" Calista's voice was hoarse as she tugged at Mark's shoulders. "Stop it! You don't understand."
Mark held his fist in the air above a groaning Adam.
"He just lost his mother and lost his mind for a minute. I promise he's not a bad guy and I'm fine."
"You think I can't recognize an abusive man when I see one?"
"Please, let him go. He just lost his mother. Please," Calista pleaded. "I'll explain everything but please let him go. Aren't you an officer? You can't do this. He's unarmed. He won't press charges for brutality of you just let him go."
Mark cursed before standing up, pulling Adam up with him. "Normally, I would arrest your sorry ass but she has a point."
Adam coughed up blood.
"Even if you lost someone you loved, that's no excuse to beat up a woman. Get your ass up and leave before I change my mind." Mark shoved Adam.
Adam turned to Calsita and shook his head in disgust. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. I just-"
"It's fine." Calista wanted him to leave before Detective Jessup changed his mind. "Please go. I'll call you later, okay?"
Adam touched his already swollen lip, giving a disapproving look to Mark before turning to leave. He turned around again and said, "I really am sorry, Calista."
"Please, go."
"You heard her, ass-wipe. Leave!" Mark shouted.
After Adam left, Mark turned to Calista who was still rubbing her neck. "What the hell just happened? And don't give me some BS excuse that you love him because any man who hurts a woman doesn't deserve love."
"You don't understand."
"Well, explain it to me."
Calista shook her head. "It'll take a while."
"Lucky for me, I just decided to end my shift. Now spill. What's going on between you two? Did you two plan something to get rid of his wife? I brought you two into questioning before and you played dumb. I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt but after witnessing your Ike and Tina Turner act, I'm starting to think differently. What's going on between you two? Where's Calista Hargrove? Please don't tell me you two killed her!"
"She's not dead."
"So you know where she's at?"
"Of course I do."
"Well, tell me."
Calista felt everything that had happened in the past few days suddenly hitting her at once. Adam finding out who she was. Calista Dover showing herself and telling her they were related and Adam had cheated on her. Calista Dover accusing Sebastian of being a possible murderer. Her mother-in-law being murdered. The kiss with Sebastian. It was all too much to take.
"I'm Calista Hargrove," she whispered.
"What did you say?" She didn't have to look at Detective Jessup to know he was surprised.
She repeated herself, "I'm Calista Hargrove. It's a long story but somehow I had plastic surgery to look like Calista Dover so I've been pretending to be her but I can't anymore. I don't know what to do or who to trust because I remembered small parts of what happened at St. Anthony's and even though I don't know everything that happened that night, I know one thing for sure."
Mark's mouth was hanging open. "And what's that?"
"Someone was trying to kill me." Tears began to fall down her cheeks as she looked up at him. "You're a detective, aren't you? Please, help me."
