Chapter 30

"I told you already, Yvonne. I can't...I don't see you that way. No, I don't want to talk about it. I'll figure out the medical bills on my own. Listen, I'm a little busy. I'll talk to you later, okay?"

Yvonne was still insisting they continue their conversation when Adam disconnected the call, tucking the phone in his suit's pocket.

"Mr. Hargrove, you're here early," a nurse said, smiling at him. She pointed to the hospital room. "Your mother's already inside."

"No change?"

Her smile faltered at having to give him the same answer she always did, "No, sir. No changes today."

"Thanks, Rory. You're the best nurse here." Adam winked.

She giggled and pressed a finger to her lips. "Shhh...or the other nurses will get jealous."

She continued past him and Adam sighed before pushing the door open to the room his parents were in.

Adam hated hospitals. He always had. Over the past few months, he had been forced to accustom himself to seeing life machines and the smell of green tea hand sanitizer.

"Adam, you're here," his mother said softly. It was an obvious thing so Adam wasn't sure why she said it. He placed a hand on his mother's cheek as he kissed her forehead. "I have good news." He turned to his father in the bed next to her.

"Good news?" His mother turned to him as Adam sat down and stretched his legs out, stifling a yawn.

"I found your daughter-in-law."

His mother quickly inhaled a breath of disbelief. "You found Calista?"

Adam closed his eyes and nodded. He still couldn't believe it himself. Sure, after meeting Calista Dover he had doubts. Those doubts were about his sanity. It wasn't until he kissed her that he knew for sure she was his wife.

"Where is she? Is she okay?"

He listened intently to the steady rhythm of the heart monitor. How much could he tell his mother? Probably not much.

"Don't worry. She's fine."

"Where has she been all this time? And did you tell her about your father?" his mother asked. "What did she say when you told her about your father? Doesn't she care that he's in a coma? It's partly her fault."

"It's not her fault." Adam sighed. It was a conversation they'd had before. "He had a heart attack while driving after hearing she was missing. That doesn't mean it's her fault."

"It does to me," his mother muttered. "So what did she say when you told her?"

"I didn't tell her about dad. I couldn't."

"Why couldn't you? And you didn't tell me where she's been all this time. Did she have a good reason why she left? I can't believe that girl would leave you so what's going on? Where is she?"

Adam rubbed his temples. "She forgot."

"She forgot?" The corner of his mother's mouth curled up in confusion.

"She had amnesia. She forgot me, you, and dad. She forgot everything," Adam answered. "She forgot everything."

His mother's eyes widened. "That really happens? People really get amnesia? I just thought that happened in soap operas. So she remembers everything now?"

A sad smile spread across his face as he thought of Calista's earlier words. Someone was trying to kill her. She didn't know who but she did know that she wanted to continue parading around as a woman that wasn't his wife.

"Does she remember everything?" His mother asked again.

It wasn't hitting him until now that Calista had been the one who suffered through the St. Anthony's fire. Calista had been the one in the car with him when they had been held up and had that accident. He hadn't told anyone that he had lied to the police. He rubbed his head some more as life's complications were catching up to him.

"Adam?"

"I don't think so. Probably not," Adam said. He thought of the pictures at St. Anthony's that had been in the newspaper and on the news. They were all disturbing pictures of death.

"Will she eventually remember everything?"

"I don't know," Adam whispered. "I hope not."

"You keep causing problems. Next time you won't be so lucky," a voice whispered in her ear. "Next time you won't be so lucky."

She opened her eyes and looked around. Roger, Janelle, and Sebastian were staring at her.

"Are you okay?" Janelle asked. "You totally conked out as soon as we picked you up from the hospital."

Calista rubbed her eyes. "I'm fine. I told you all that I didn't need to spend the night at the hospital."

"Nonsense." Sebastian frowned. "You were almost a victim of a fire. You've been in a car accident. Then there's--"

"She probably doesn't need a reminder," Janelle told him.

Sebastian ignored her and stepped closer to Calista who was sprawled out on the leather sofa in his study. "Were you just having a nightmare?"

Calista shrugged, avoiding Roger's curious expression. "I don't know. Probably." It was the truth. Spending the night alone at the hospital had only given her nightmares. Were they nightmares? Or had someone secretly gone into her room and whispered in her ear like the time before? She shuddered at the thought.

"I'd like to speak to Calista alone. Do you two mind?" Sebastian nodded towards the door.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Janelle asked Calista, her eyes on Sebastian.

"I-I'm fine. Go ahead. I'm sure Pop Pop is waiting for you upstairs."

Janelle nodded and Roger cleared his throat. "I'll see you two tomorrow then."

Sebastian waited until they were both gone before turning back to Calista. "There's something I should tell you."

"Oh?"

"It's something important. I've actually known for a long time but wasn't sure how to tell you until today."

Calista sat up and fidgeted on the sofa. "Is it about the car accident?"

"Not necessarily."

"What is it about then?" Calista asked, her blue eyes watching as Sebastian pulled open his drawer and picked up a thin rectangular velvet box. He handed the box towards her. "Open it."

She flipped the box open and a tiny gasp of surprise escaped her. "Oh...it's my necklace."

Sebastian grinned. "Not exactly. It's a new necklace."

She fingered the delicate gold necklace that spelled her name. "You bought me another one? You really shouldn't have."

"I originally bought this for my sister. We didn't always get along and Pop Pop told me I shouldn't always ignore her. She and I just never seemed to understand one another. She was always carefree and said whatever she wanted to say. I couldn't do that. I still can't," Sebastian admitted. "Family is important, don't you agree?"

Calista nodded, staring at the necklace.

"I've considered you my sister since you wanted to help me protect our company. You wanted to help me, didn't you?"

Calista closed the velvet box, leaving the necklace untouched. "I can't accept this. It wouldn't be right."

"Why not? I'm buying it for my sister."

She wanted to protest and she forced herself to look at him. His eyes were glossy as though he were forcing himself not to cry.

"Sebastian?"

"I always took Calista for granted. I never spent time with her even though I knew she wanted me to. I ignored how she felt."

"I forgive you," Calista said, thinking that's what he wanted to hear.

"You can't forgive on someone else's behalf," Sebastian whispered.

Calista's breath hitched in her throat and her heart thudded in her chest. He knew.

He knew she wasn't his sister.

"Yesterday, I visited the hospital before everyone came to visit you. I know you said not to come but I did anyway. Roger stayed at the company. I saw you with that lawyer."

"Sebastian, let me explain--"

"You were kissing," he said.

Calista felt her stomach flip in disbelief. "He's--"

"Your husband," Sebastian finished. "I know everything."

Calista opened her mouth but she couldn't seem to move her lips to form words.

"I'm sorry, Calista. I knew that you weren't my real sister. At one point I thought you were her...but you're not. I should've told you, but I couldn't. You being here helped me with the whole St. Anthony's ordeal. If I hadn't claimed you as my sister, none of it would've happened. I made the mistake and had to live with the consequences. Now I can't let you go. I told you I considered you a sister but I also need your help."

"You knew?"

Sebastian sat down beside her. "I knew. I didn't know who you were until yesterday. I didn't even know if you knew who you really were until yesterday. Why did you keep your identity a secret?"

"It's a long story."

"I have time."

Calista bit her bottom lip. "It's going to sound crazy, but I think someone was trying to murder me. The night of St. Anthony's, I remember someone threatening me. They even said my name. I didn't know who and I still don't so I didn't feel safe going back to my real life. Besides, I couldn't talk for months, remember?"

"Do you remember anything else?" Sebastian asked.

"No, but since then a lot of strange things have been happening. How much trouble am I in for lying to you?"

His brows narrowed across his forehead. "Trouble?"

"I'm sure I've broken a dozen laws pretending to be your sister."

He waved his hand in the air as though it wasn't important. "That doesn't matter now. I knew you weren't my sister and I let you continue acting like her. It helped me in the long run. Besides, I want you to continue being Calista Dover. At least until I can find her."

"What do you mean?"

"My sister has been missing. I have no idea why but it looks like someone is trying to hurt you, thinking you're the real Calista Dover. I think my sister is in hiding and won't come back until she feels safe. I've hired some private detectives to search for her but in the meantime, I want you to continue acting like you're Calista Dover."

"What?"

"Before you say no, think it over. You said someone is trying to harm you as your real self. Now someone is trying to harm you as my sister. I like you and I don't want to see you hurt. I can't protect you when you're the real you. I can protect you as long as you're Calista Dover."

She let the words sink in as reality drifted away like a balloon caught in a strong breeze.

"This is insane," she whispered.

"I know. I'm not the type of person to ask for help but I'm asking you. Will you help me?" He lifted the velvet box and opened it, presenting the necklace to her once more. "Will you be my fake sister?"
