Chapter 39. Your Perfect Timing
Everything feels heavy as I attempt to bring myself back to the land of the living. Everything besides my right arm, it feels light and tingly. I can't remember what happened to me. All I know is that it was bad.
My head feels scattered as I try to remember what happened, I can remember going to meet Alice seeing her and Zane meet knowing that they are mates and the rest well... it's a blur.
Sounds are starting to sneak their way into my mind drawing me to wherever I am right now. I cannot make out any words yet my ears feel blocked, but I can hear growls, snarls and raised voices. I swear on my life I can hear a door slam at the same time the light feeling in my body leaves.
Without it I want to crawl back to the darkness but my wolf is coming back as well and she refuses to let us go anywhere. It is as if she knows this secret that I do not.
I can hear crying coming from somewhere near me as I fight to get up and make my presence known. My wolf lends me all of the strength she can muster she wants us up and about but I struggle. I cannot even open my eyes yet. This is torture, my mind is awake but my body wont cooperate with what I want.
What I need...
The more I try to fight this the further away I slip from my goal. I can hear the faint noise of a commotion around me before I hear yelling "EVERYONE OUT!" A voice that chills me to the bone silences everything around me and I feel everyone leave me even the weird feeling in my arm disappears.
Without that feeling I slip away much to the dismay of my wolf.
I don't know how long I am living in this darkness for it feels like forever. I hear small bits and pieces as I fight for control, as I fight to get my body to do what my mind wants. Ever so slowly the wolf in me grows stronger and she lends me her strength, but there is only so much she can do. Ultimately it's up to me. I feel ready but my body is letting me down.
I'm going insane like this. I'm so close yet so far away this distance and not knowing what is happening is driving my mind insane. Small things are starting to come back to me. I remember being scared, I remember running but it's what I don't know that kills me.
Are my friends safe? Are they alright? Is everyone alive and well? Have we made too Alices' pack? Will she even still be there if she is Zanes' mate or will she be gone by the time I wake from this nightmare of a slumber.
My wolf growls and snarls out more and more as I continue to stay like this. She feels uneasy that she knows something but she can't communicate to me and it worries me.
She snaps at my mind. I put all of my effort into moving a finger if I can move a small twitch even just to get someone to notice me because talking to myself isn't doing much for my sanity.
**
More time has passed with people coming and going but now feels different I feel almost as strong as normal. I think it's got something to do with the tingles. I feel safe when they are here.
I can sense that I am surrounded at the moment as I slowly gain control of my senses. It seems as though everyone around me is angry, tense but why? My eyes are still heavy but I can begin to hear everything. I can hear the beeping of a heart monitor, that must be mine. I can hear growls and snarls. "Why? DO you think I wanted this to happen?" Someone snaps.
"Easy." I hear a soft voice whisper.
"What I am meant to think when you show up how you did and she is pretty much dead! I mean look at her." After living my life in fear I can hear the fear laced in this voice even if they are trying to sound angry. They are just scared I have heard many wolves sound like this before when they were trapped in the cages.
It's easier to sound angry then let anyone know you are afraid.
"This isn't the time or place for this." A calmer voice tries to get everyone in the room to understand but they are ignored. I can sense the anger rising around me and I just want to be awake and out of this situation.
My wolf agrees with me and pushes just as hard as I am before I know it I hear the sound of glass breaking and shuffling feet. I can hear the sound of flesh meeting flesh. They are fighting around me.
I muster up everything in me, I feel my body begin to move again, I can feel every ache and pain as my muscles start to twitch, I hope that someone is paying attention to me but I know they are not. The growling between wolves is so intense around me that I shudder away. Just as I open my eyes to the harsh white light of what appears to be a hospital room I feel a body knock into me.
As they knock into me I fall but my body isn't prepared for sudden movements so I have nothing to break my fall and I land roughly on my face and arms. I can't help but scream out in pain. As I do the room falls into silence.
"Luce." Alice has her hands on me turning me, I squint away from the light as she looks over me. "Luce?" She waits for my response, I open my mouth but I realise how parched I am, I need water before I can even dream of having a conversation.
"Wat.. wat.. Water." I barely manage to gargle out. Alice looks around not wanting to leave me.
"Well stop just standing there and get me some bloody water for her." She snaps, I can't see who she is yelling at because the bed blocks my view of the room.
The door swings open. "Alpha." A strong male voice enters. "What in the moon happened here?" The man asks just as Zane passes a cup towards Alice giving me a weak smile. "Alpha?" The man I cannot see asks sternly. This isn't Zanes doctor she is a woman, could this be Aices' pack doctor that was going to retire?
Why isn't Zane answering him? He is asking for the alpha. "Nothing, just a missundering." Another man that I can't see speaks but all it takes is his voice to draw my senses to him. My wolf is going insane knowing what he is to us, it's overwhelming my body wants nothing but to get up and go over to him to look at him. My wolf wants nothing more than that but I need answers first. I need to know what happened to me.
"Well then out." who I assume is the doctor commands.
"But-" My unknown mate goes to argue but a vicious growl cuts him off.
"Look at the state of this place, you can both get out. You could have killed her, you can return later, if either of the females in this room let you." Zane looks at Alice begging her to say something. I can see them linking each other but she isn't having it.
"Get out." She hisses before focusing back on me. "Are you ready to hop up and get off the floor?" She asks with a small laugh.
I nod slowly only once I hear the door shut behind the two males, an older male is flipping the chairs and my bed back over and into their rightful places, I look him over, both the wolf and I assessing him. He is strong. I think he was once a warrior but the limp in his left leg and the scar running down his left temple and disappearing into his shirt gives away his injuries. He has dark black salt and pepper hair with these warm and inviting green eyes. He appears to be built like a bear but his eyes show a soft side.
He notices me looking at him. "It;s impolite to stare little one." he huffs out.
"Sorry." I look away from him as he lets out a sigh of annoyance. Once the room is righted alice helps me back onto the bed as both she and the doctor begin gathering equipment. "Do you remember anything?" He asks me.
"Not much to be honest bits and pieces." I shrug.
"Not surprising." He mutters to himself. HE motions to Alice and she moves to me lifting up my gown.
"Sorry." She whispers. "It has to be done." I help her help me shimmy out of my gown and look at my body for the first time. I gasp seeing my shoulder and stomach bandage and various cuts and scars litterling my body that haven't healed. "What?" I ask but Alice is in full doctor mode removing, cleaning and rebandaging me. She doesnt stop until everything looks perfect and back in place. The doctor passes a new gown towards her and she helps me back into it by lacing the back of it behind my head.
"You suffered a lot of trauma on your way here, lots of silver was found in your blood system mainly due to the shots that landed in both of your shoulders and abdominin." He doesn't give me time to process anything; he just continues to talk while Alice sits on the bed, my hand in hers. Comforting me.
"You've been in a coma for roughly three and a half weeks-"
"WHAT!?" I blurt out, unable to contain my shock at the situation but the nice old bear of a doctor just continues talking I look over at Alice for answers.
"Leo." She interrupts "I think we need to take this a bit slower, Luce is still in shock." The doctor, Leo looks over to me and nods his head.
"Lucinda, you were attacked, do you remember?" he starts over while I shake my head. I think I remember but it is all a blur.
"I can take over?" Alice suggests. Both of the doctors have a silent exchange before Leo sighs in defeat. "Don't take too long he won't stay away much longer. I'm surprised he has lasted this long." he chuckles as he leaves us in peace.
"Luce can you remember anything?"
"A little." I take another sip of much needed water that was sitting on the bedside table. "I remember we met up with you and the members of your pack, that you and Zane found each other." I smile towards her. "I'm so happy for you although I will be quite lonely here without you."
"Luce" She tries to interrupt but my memories are forcing my words out just like word vomit. "I remember freezing. Oh god I am so sorry that I froze. I remember an attack but not what happened." Tears beg to be released but this isn't the time to cry.
"Yes we were attacked. You took silver bullets for me." She looks guilty. "Zane, Andrew and the warriors from my pack took them out once you got shit, they were young and not trained for the wolves they faced. I don't think they were looking for the fight, they just stumbled upon us." She lost herself in thought for a moment.
Sighing, she continues. "We were messy with the job, they cared more about cutting them down than making sure they were dead. We had a few injuries that needed immediate attention. I thought we lost you at one point Lena had her shoulder stabbed and Andrew took a bullet to the hip trying to get to you. Others were just bruised and sore. But because they were messes they followed us. And called for pack up. We ran here, this pack was closer than mine." She stopped again letting everything sink in.
"It was complicated, we had to explain to the patrol that we meant no harm and we were in danger but when Colten showed up all hell broke loose. He saw you almost dead and because I saw the one leaning over you trying to stop the bleeding, he came at me which led Zane to attack him. It was bloody Andrew and Coltens beta had to intervene Thankfully one of the patrols got into contact with Leo and he came and took you, Andrew, Lena and Drew, a member from my pack straight here."
Colten, his name is Colten. Is it a bad thing that I had to learn his name from someone else? But he attacked Alice... "He attacked you?"
"Hey." She nudges me. "We got here all bloodied and he felt the mate pull, the first thing he sees is you pretty much dead. I don't blame him. Honestly he did better then any male I know would have handled that situation he didn't hurt me." She smiled. "You always have perfect timing for the things in your life." She laughed and I couldn't help but join her. Until I had to wince out in pain.
"Hey now, no laughing for you. Now you were out for a long time Leo was right we have been here for almost four weeks now, the healing has been slowed down mainly due to the issue of us having to travel and not being able to get the silver out until we got here."
Alice was going to say some more when the door swung open. I met his eyes. Eyes a mix of an ocean blue and leaf green. Those eyes that held me rooted to my spot.
The eyes of my mate. Alice is right. I really do have the best timing.
