Chapter 19. Let The Good Times Roll
We had been up in this tree for a full day now, all taking turns sleeping and keeping watch. Not that sleep was easy it was incredibly hard to sleep on a tree brunch, it was not comfortable and it was also incredibly easy to fall off.
We ran a fair distance the pervious night and climbed up this tree just before the sun started to rise. We thought we had gotten far enough away but we were mistaken, the hunters came again and this time they stayed for longer. Night was upon us again and they did not seem as though they were about to move on.
We had been watching the hunters come and go all day, they were looking everywhere for us and I just hoped that they moved on soon. I wanted to get out of here back to a form of civilisation with our own kind. I honestly wouldn't care if we ended up in a witch or vampire coven. Anywhere would be better then this.
And they wouldn't kill us on the spot, well I hope so at least, I know that no matter where we go we will end up in the cells so that they can prove our story and point out that we aren't rogues.
Rogues, I barely remember what they are, my brothers warned me about them when I was young. That they are any of the supernatural creatures that have given up on their humanity. Be it by heartbreak and loss or they just can't stand the human side of them. Each and every one of us has a beast inside us that not everyone is able to control.
They told me that there are signs to telling who is a rogue and who is just lost. They told me that rogues have this wild and feral look to them, there eyes turn white I think that's what they told me, and that they also smell really bad. Now vampires smell like death, but not a bad death smell. I am unsure of really how to describe it, they make us wolves gag and I am not sure about the witches but it is manageable and not overwhelming to the senses.
But with rogues, no matter if they are a witch, vampire of wolf they smell like rot and decay, as if the body is rotting from the inside out. I have never smelt it and was told that I do not want to smell it ever.
I know that we all smell terrible but I hope that our scent is different from a rogue, explaining our situation will be difficult enough as it is.
The witch and I were the ones on watch duty right now, she was clinging onto the vampire, as he liked to move around a hell of a lot as he slept, trying to get a comfortable position. It drew a smile and a silent laugh to my lips as I watched her struggle and almost gave up with him. I was looking after Lucas, he had his head in my lap, as wolves we liked to be around our own kind. He was very restless until I brought him closer to me.
We felt safer today hiding, they were not looking up trees, they were looking for the hollow trees assuming that we were weak and unable to climb up. It would only be a matter of time though. Eventually they will start to look up the trees, I am in a way surprised that they haven't. But I hope that they continued to be oblivious to our presence here, just for a little while longer at least.
We had to remain silent up in this tree as they were still below us, it looked as though they were going to set up camp here for the night, which was not good for us. I was dying for something to eat and drink but I wouldn't risk opening the bag and making any form of noise.
The one thing we did have to worry about was the boys waking up and causing a commotion, we couldn't wake them ourselves because that would startle them and they could do anything that would draw attention up here. The fear was starting to close in around me again but I need to keep my cool, I have to push it back and stay calm and just hope that they move on soon enough.
I watched them with curiosity from my perch while clinging to my spot and Lucas, if I wasn't careful I would wake him soon with how tight I was holding onto to him. I watched them as they came in black 4WD I cant for the life of me describe the car, I know nothing about them, we didn't have need for a car in our life when I was younger we just ran everywhere and before I could shift I rode on my brothers backs. They were setting up tents for the night and some others were setting up fires. There was one big one in the centre of it all for everyone to gather around and then there were small ones closer to the tents, I guess to keep them warm at night.
The sun had completely disappeared from sight and the moon was making her way high up into the sky on full display, nothing hiding her from the world below, and nothing to hide the devastation from her. We would be in for one very long night.
The warmth of the flames was starting to get uncomfortable as the heat was rising, we were still just in rags but with the strength of the wolf coming back my temperature was rising with her. Us wolves always ran at a higher temperature than everyone else. I wanted to remove the rags from my body as they created more and more fires they were obliviously cold out her in the wilderness or have never had to suffer in the cold, always sheltered and warm. Even the witch was starting to get a little uncomfortable. A sheen of sweat was covering my body slightly cooling me whenever the breeze would blow through the trees, Lucas was the same, and I could feel the sweat dripping from his head and hair onto my lap.
I felt a pang of jealousy at the moment when I looked towards the vampire, he was not covered in sweat, he actually looked unfazed by the warmth. I envy that this very moment.
The hunters below looked as though they were having the best of times down below us, they were joking around laughing without a care in the world. They were passing bottles of alcohol around the smell of whiskey is burnt into my memory from when Jordan tried to experiment with it when he was younger and well, lets just say he never went near it again. I couldn't help but smile slightly at the memory of him swearing to Conner and myself that alcohol tasted terrible and that we should never go near it as he was throwing up into the bathtub he had spent the night in.
I have to hold on to all of the memories of my brothers for that is all I have left.
Lucas due to the heat was starting to stir and awaken I just prayed to the moon that he didn't make a sound. I held my arm up slightly giving him more room to move as I sat as still as a statue. I watched him as he opened his eyes slowly rubbing the sleep out of them sitting up with a yawn and a stretch. Thankfully all of this was done in silence. He opened his mouth to talk in which I swiftly covered with my hand using the other to hold my finger to my lips, an action that I feel I am doing a lot of lately. He raised a brow questioning to and I just glanced down, Lucas followed my line of sight with wide eyes realising the situation that we were currently in.
I really hope that tonight passes by quickly. We really need a win right now.
Lucas pulled me closer to him as we watched the hunters now start to eat passing various meats around to each other. The smell of it caused my mouth to water slight, I was so hungry at this moment just as I was dying for something to drink. I had to stop myself from moving down this tree just to get a taste of delicious cooked meat with juices that would run down my throat quenching both my thirst and hunger.
We all watched the hunters below us, licking our lips. I had been so focused on them that I hadn't even noticed the vampire wake up, I just wasn't sure if it was the food or the blood pulsing through the hunters he was licking his lips over.
Soon enough some of the hunters were going to their tents with others staying awake to keep an eye out for us. At moments like this I wonder if anyone else was able to escape?
I do hope so.
The night was torturously slow the hunters would take turns sleeping and keeping watch it was a boring scene to see play out. I was thankful when Lucas pulled me over to his lap willing me to sleep, I only got a few hours but it was all I needed. I woke up to see them packing up and moving on as the sun was just starting to make its appearance.
Once they all drove away in different directions I let out a relaxed breath of air and let my tense body relax a little bit. "What do we do now?" The witch asked.
"Wait it out until nightfall I guess." I shrugged my shoulders reaching for the bag that was in Lucas's position I needed something to eat and drink.
I gave everyone their portions and we all ate in silence putting everything back into the bag when we were finished. "What do we do if they come back here tonight?" I asked although I knew the answer.
"We will have to spend enough night in the tree and take our chances running during the day." It was the vampire who answered me this time.
We all hope that they don't come back, being stuck up this tree was annoying all of us, I was cramping up and I just wanted to move, being up this tree was reminding me of being trapped in the cage. Although it was worse because I was technically free right now, but my body felt just as uncomfortable I just wanted to move and stretch out but I couldn't.
We all felt the same way as our legs dangled off the braches we were sitting on. "Why don't we do something to pass the time?" The witch spoke up, and I cant say that it was a bad idea but what could we do up in this tree?
"Like what?" The vampire responded who seemed to be on the same train of thought as myself.
"I don't know." She shrugged. "What's your name?" She asked looking over to me and Lucas, not really caring who answered her.
Lucas cleared his throat. "I'm Lucas." He smiled and pointed over to me assuming that the question was directed to both of us.
"I'm Lit-" I was going to say little wolf until I stopped myself that wasn't my name it was something my brothers called me, and only they could call me that. "I'm Lucinda." I smiled. "What about you two?" I asked
I was really curious, I had never actually met a witch or a vampire before, I assume that they would have really cool names like the witch would have something eccentric and the vampire would have a name that sounded dark and mysterious just like there kinds are painted out to be.
"I'm Wanda." The witch smiled with a laugh appearing on her lips.
"That's an interesting name." Lucas smiled towards her.
"If you think my name is interesting you will love my brothers!" She laughed. I raised my brow begging for her to continue. "Cosmo!" She kept laughing and I had to join in.
"Like Wanda and Cosmo from that kids show?" The vampire questioned and I just wanted to question why he knew about kid shows.
"No, oh goddess no they were in love we are siblings no it was my father doing for 'wonder the cosmic' he was obsessed with stars!" She shook her head with a large smile. "But just imagine our surprise when a T.V show appeared with our names being used for the main characters, EVERYONE and I mean everyone made jokes about it when we were kids." She sighed remember the good old days of her childhood.
"What about you?" Wanda asked the vampire.
"Alan." He deadpanned. Alan, the vampires name is Alan?
No one could hold back there laughter as the vampire just looked around at all of us confused before hushing us just in case hunters were still nearby.
"What type of vampire name is 'Alan'" Wanda laughed
"I really wasn't expecting that." I admitted as I was settling down.
"Yeah I expected something completely different." Lucas chimed in.
"Yeah, yeah I know." The vampire sighed "I'm a vampire my name should be something dark and scary like Vladimir. Who would be afraid of Alan the vampire!" He laughed a little. "Alan the vampire that sounds like someone who would drain the life out of nothing besides your taxes." That last comment made us all lose it again, even Alan.
It felt weird to have names to refer to them by, no longer were they just 'the witch' or 'the vampire' they were actual people now.
"I like your name, its pretty." Wanda smiled towards me. I laughed a thanks her way unsure of how to respond to that
We fell into an easy silence after that for a moment before I opened up my big mouth. "Why did you help us Alan? And stay with Wanda? You could have gotten out and be very far away from here." I couldn't stop the words that came out it was like my brain could think so my mouth just threw out words that had been in my head.
"Ahh..." He paused as everyone looked away slightly this was a sort of personal question. "Well I stayed because Wanda wanted to stay with you, I could see it in her eyes and I stayed with her because she reminds me of my older sister." He paused for a moment his mind taking him to a different place. "Wanda, I don't know why just as something that reminds me of my sister she is the same height the same shade of dark chocolate brown eyes."
"That's sweet." I blurted out. "Was your sister here?" I asked another question curious of this vampire.
"No." He looked down. "She died when I was little, she was about 20 years older then me, she died but no one ever told me how."
"I'm sorry." I whispered hating myself at the moment as the witch, no not 'the witch' Wanda put her arms around Alan to which he smiled at appreciating her comfort.
"What about your family?" Lucas asked Wanda.
"Oh I don't know." She shrugged. "I was living with my aunt and her coven when I was taken so I really have no idea, but my aunt wasn't taken, others from the coven had been taken with me." She seemed odd with her answer like she wasn't fussed, I wanted to ask more but decided it wasn't the time for that.
"What about you two?" She was now putting the pressure on us. "You two seem like siblings."
"We aren't." I started but Lucas took over. "But our families were taken with us, and now well as you can tell they aren't with us." His shoulders shook a little but straightened himself back up.
"Lucas is now the only person I really have left even if he isn't actually family." I admitted to which he agreed.
We were all silent again after that conversation went a little dark but no one wanted to stay in silence so we started sharing good times about our past lives. Like how Wanda once turned her brother into a toad for taking a bite of her cookie and how for revenge he did a spell that made it so she couldn't talk to the boy she had a crush on, she could only neigh like a horse around him. That story taught me never to piss off a witch.
Alan told us about how he and his friends 'accidently' destroyed the castle they once lived in on a dare and how they all faced their coven with 'wasn't me' looks on their faces and got away with it. And how they kept pushing each other into the wet cement when they were helping rebuild it so from then on some walls and falls had outlines of them all.
Lucas told us all about how Bianca would destroy there house looking for her makeup, phone and really everything she owned when really he just hid everything under her bed, or how she was use him as a model to test out makeup looks on and make him walk around there pack like that all day when he messed up.
I told them how I used to make my brothers wear flower crowns and have tea parties with me all the time and mope when they didn't do what I wanted. I also told them of how I would cause a little bit of trouble by putting itching powder through there clothing and beds when they did something to annoy me.
It felt nice to laugh with each other for just a while remembering the good times and for now we were all bonding, we were becoming somewhat friends.
We all deserved to laugh for a while and we spent the day doing so up until the hunters drove back just before the sun started to set.
Thankfully they drove right by us, going back to wherever it is they came from.
