CHAPTER 14
Grian walked along the beach, humming softly as he stared out into the ocean. Mumbo watched with worried eyes. His friends and even himself have tried to get whatever is happening to the avian out of him, but he just won't budge. Scar sat next to him, arms folded and foot tapping as he too watched. “Why are we just sitting? He’s pacing the beach again! We need to get him away from that beach and somewhere else.” Mumbo agreed, but it wasn’t that simple. Whatever was bugging the avian, it was big. The mustache man fiddled with his fingers, eyes watching his close friend carefully.
“I don’t know what to do, Scar. But trying to distract him isn’t going to work.” Scar growled, frustrated like many of their friends. The sun slowly set in the background, and Mumbo didn’t understand why there had been so many parrots around Boatem village lately, but they were there too. He was sure they were all around the country, Impulse also complaining about the amount of birds in her area. It was a strange thing, a thing that even Xisuma can’t explain.
“I’m sure this will blow over. We just have to be patient.” Mumbo says, turning away to go home. Scar though stayed, watching his friend with worry. Why was Grian acting so weird? It was scaring Scar greatly. Gemini came over to the other after a half an hour, Grian now out of sight. Scar still sat in place though, the night sky raining over the two. Gem’s ears slouched seeing the others' sad expression.
“Scar?” The human looked over to the hybrid, who only smiled sweetly. “Why don’t you come over for dinner, it may help your… thoughts?” She tilted her head, green eyes soft and welcoming. The older smiled, getting up at the invite.
“Why not.” As he walked past the deer hybrid, she herself couldn’t help the small frown forming on her face. Looking back to the beach that Grian had been pacing for days now, she couldn’t help but wonder what was going through that avian's mind.
Later That Night. . .
Karl stayed awake until all the others in the lower decks were asleep. He was determined to see Quackity, he missed Quackity. So, carefully, the brownette slid out of his hammock to go to the avian’s own. The time traveler tried to stop himself from stepping on one of the squeaky planks below him, tiptoeing towards his fiance. That was before the person above his own hammock began stirring. “Karl?” The brownette shot his head over, seeing a drowsy Sapnap staring at him. “Why… What’s going on?” Karl put his index finger to his lips, indicating for the other fiance to quiet down. Groggily Sap nodded, the blaze hybrid making his way out of his own hammock and down the ladder next to it.
He slid down, making contact with the floor with a loud thump. Karl jumped, a few of the others around then grumbling and stirring before going back to sleep. The brownette glared at his loud fiance, who only smiled nervously back before making his way over as quiet as possible. “What are you doing?” Karl whispered out, feeling Sap hug him as he neared.
“I could ask the same thing.” The taller mumbled, stuffing his face in the smallers neck. Karl smiled, ruffling the other’s hair before softly pushing the other away. The bandana wearer looked hurt but was still half asleep. “What? Are you mad at me?” His voice was squeaky, making Karl have to hold back a giggle.
“No, I want to see Quackity.” The air between them was silent, Sapnap smiling and waking up a bit more at Karl’s words. The time traveler smiled sweetly, reaching one of his hands out for the prince to take. “Do you want to come with me?” The other took his hand, an eager nod being seen through the dim light in the lower decks. The two made their way to the sleeping fiance, who was snoring softly and his wings out on either side of the hammock, the gold feathers grazing the floor as the hammock swayed to an unknown rhythm. The two awake fiance’s looked at one another, both smiling before the brownette leaned over to shake the avian’s shoulder. At first, the one still sleeping just shooed the other away, grumbling about a few more minutes, before finally opening his eyes with a sigh. He looked up, seeing both Sapnap and Karl now leaning over him.
He almost screamed, since his sight was half gone and he just woke up it looked a bit blurry, it looked as if two buff guys were leaning over him about to strangle the poor young adult. Karl shoved his hand over the now wide awake man’s mouth before he could though. Once he came to, Quackity slapped Karl’s hand away, anger was written all over his face. “What the actual HELL?!” He yell-whispered. Karl frowned, looking guilty, while Sapnap was trying to hold back his laughs.
“Sorry, I should have given you a heads up.” Karl quietly said back. The avian softened a bit at the smallers words, sighing tiredly before slowly sliding out of his hammock. Once he did he brought the time traveler into a sweet hug, rubbing the others back in a comforting way.
“It’s ok, I’m not mad. I was just a little freaked out is all.” Sapnap slowly inched closer, as if asking if he could join the hug. With a smile Quackity let one of his arms unwrap around Karl, letting the blaze hybrid slide into the embrace. Quackity missed this. After a little bit more of the hug fest, Quackity latched himself off of his two clingy fiances determined to get some answers out of the two. “What are you guys doing up in the middle of the night?”
“Well, lately we haven’t been able to see each other. So, I was hoping we could go to the main deck and hang out?” Karl asked. The avian smiled at the other, nodding in agreement.
“Yeah, that sounds nice.” The three slowly made their way to the top deck, all taking in a needed inhale of the fresh air. They walked on top, taking seats on some barrels that sat around the mast. Karl laid his head on Quackity’s lap, letting the other run his fingers through his brown locks carelessly as he and Sapnap caught up. Subpoena himself sat leaning against Quackity, who side hugged the other with one of his wings.
“So, how was your adventure in the Antarctic kingdom anyways?” Quackity laughed, getting on with the adventure he had making both other fiances smile. All three told stories of their time apart, but mostly Sapnap and Quackity, Karl did sprinkle in his training with Punz every once in a while though. It was like back in the Dreamer kingdom castle. Karl smiled at the memories. He remembered the many times they would cuddle up on the couches and speak about their day, or just talk about old memories or funny things they heard from around the castle. Karl missed those nights now.
“What are we going to do when the war’s over guys?” Quackity quietly says. The three had been sitting in silence for a while, all soaking up each other's presence. But now they sat in silence with a question. A question that Sapnap seemed quick to answer.
“We get married, and move into the Egg kingdom to take over the throne and let my parents finally retire.” The avian seemed to tense up, eyes cascaded down and looking at Karl, who only stared up at the other two.
“What if, I don’t want to become a king?” Quackity whispered out. Karl too had thought that, being a ruler over a kingdom he barely knew. Well, ruling over a kingdom at all sounds terrifying to the time traveller. But now that he wasn’t the only one that thought that, he was ready to voice his opinion.
“I’m not sure if I’m fit to be a king either, Sappy. Plus, your parents are kinda mean to Quackity. I’m not sure if our relationship will be able to last in the Egg castle anyways.” The blaze hybrid looked hurt, defences slowly coming to a rise. He lifted himself to sit straight, serious eyes looking at the other two.
“I’m not abandoning my parents, guys.” His tone scared Karl, but Quackity only glared. “I’m their only son. If I don’t take the throne, who will?”
“That's not exactly our problem, Sapnap. When we decided to try our relationship we all agreed that we needed to agree on what we decided to do for our futures. And me and Karl don’t feel like living in the Egg kingdom with your snobby parents.” Sap’s face hardened, both males staring at one another intensely. Quackity’s feathers ruffled, his hands now at his sides and balled. “We also agreed on not keeping secrets, Sapnap. And I think you being a fucking prince of a kingdom was a big oopsie on your part too.” Karl slowly sat up too, watching the chaos unfold.
“Oh yeah? I think you planning to fucking dissapear on us was a big oopsie for you too Quackity.”
“Are you serious? Are you seriously trying to compare your literal three year secret to my ‘disappearance’? At least I bothered to tell you guys where I was! And, it was a spring of the moment thing! It’s not like I was planning for weeks without telling you guys!” The blackette growled. Quackity was not going to let this go, Karl knew that. “Did it ever cross your mind that maybe we didn’t want to get looped up in the royalty business though? Did it ever cross your mind to ever tell us your royalty in the first place?” Silence. Sapnap looked pissed, normally brown eyes now blazing to life.
“It did, bu-”
“No, no excuses. You had three years, you could have told us at any point. But you didn’t.” Angry silence. Karl just looked from one to the other. He wanted to control the situation, tell them to stop and that this was stupid. But at the same time, Quackity had a point. “Do you not trust us or something?” Sapnap stayed quiet, his eyes slowly turning back to normal and head slowly looking down in a guilty manner. Then it hit them, both Karl and Quackity. And during this argument, it was the first time Karl said anything.
“You don’t, do you?” It was quiet, but both heard the brownette. The time traveller sounds so broken, brown eyes glassy with unshed tears. It hurt knowing one of his partners didn’t trust him, even after spending more than three years with them. Sap naps mouth shot open, eyes desperate to get something out, but was interrupted, Wilbur walking down from the quarterdeck with a curious but worried look on his tired face.
“What are you three doing up in the middle of the night? And what’s up with the yelling?” Wilbur yawned out, leaning against the stairs railing. The poor prince looked as if he was fighting to stay awake.
“We’re just talking. I’m sorry if we were too loud.” Karl apologized quietly, still fighting off tears. Quackity moved over to the other, bringing the smaller into a tight reassuring hug. Sapnap looked lost as he stared at them, looking torn and angry at the same time.
“No, Just saw you from the quarterdeck, thought i’d say hi and see what was happening.” Quackity just nodded, looking towards the prince as he did so.
“What are you doing up anyways?” Sap asks. Blunt and straight to the point, something Sapnap did regularly. Quackity this time though, wanted to punch him in the mouth. His usual calm voice sounds harsh, as if he was demanding an answer. Wilbur just shook it off, himself too tired to deal with arguing at the moment.
“Making sure the ship stays on course, general Puffy is up there too.” The brownette explains.
“Do you guys need some sleep?” Quackity asks. Wilbur shrugs, and if on cue another yawn escapes his mouth. Slowly the avian stands, bringing the time traveler up with him. “Me and Karl can watch over the boat, you and Puffy get some sleep.” Wilbur blinked.
“You can steer a boat?” Wilbur asks. Quackity nods, smiling softly.
“Sam owns a boat and taught me how to steer it when I was young.” Wilbur looked relieved, gladly accepting Quackity’s offer. The prince disappeared up the stairs after that, most likely to get Puffy and go to sleep. Sapnap stared at his two fiance’s with a hurt look. Quackity glared. “Don’t even. If anything, me and Karl should be giving you that look.” Karl shunned away, burning his face into the tallers chest, a few tears finally falling. “I think me and Karl need to think. And you do too.” The prince looked at the two in bewilderment.
“What? Think about what?” Sapnap now himself was standing.
“Think about our relationship, and whether or not we should even consider still marrying you. If tonight has shown us anything, you don’t trust us and apparently is the second pick in most situations. ” Sapnap looked hurt by his fiance’s words. “You have some thinking of your own to do.” Hesitantly, Sapnap opened his mouth to ask the question.
“What?” Quackity looked emotionless as he began to speak next.
“Me and Karl, or the Egg kingdom.”
