Chapter Twenty

~Toshinori's POV~

It had been a little over two months since I'd caught the monster terrorizing Enya in her sleep. Since then, things were quiet, almost too quiet. I was worried the villains were using this as a chance to get me to drop my guard and make some kind of move.

I returned to life as normal, mostly, I now made sure I was home for dinners with Enya. Some friends of mine on the police force took turns watching the apartment building making sure no one suspicious got in while I was out justicing. Some of my friends in law enforcement were also helping me try to look into Lorenzo, though there wasn't much they could do other than give me access to search databases.

I let out a long sigh as I shoved away from one of the deputy's desks feeling frustrated. It was another day of finding nothing. His record was suspiciously clean. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and retrieved it to find a picture message from Enya. She was at her desk in her room giggling as Tora perched atop her shoulder like a parrot. There was an accompanying caption: 'maybe instead of heroes, Tora and I can be pirates XD'.

The sickly kitten she'd nursed back to health had grown quite a bit in two months and was the very picture of health. I was glad she'd found him. I'd been worried about leaving her at the apartment alone. I smiled down at the adorable picture now taking up my screen and saved it. Chuckling softly at her caption I responded, 'the pair of you would be the cutest pirates' though they absolutely wouldn't strike fear in anyone.

"All Might, there's a villain running rampant at the mall, causing a lot of damage. Can you help us handle him?" One of the officers asked in a rush as he scrambled to my side.

"Leave it to me." I smiled and took off. As I raced off I sent another text to Enya telling her to order pizza since I wouldn't be home in time to accompany her to the grocery store.

Nearly an hour later, due to more people needing saving on my way back home, I finally made it to my apartment complex. The off duty police officer watching the building for me offered me a nod and mentioned the usual pizza delivery driver, Jake, had made his way up not too long ago.

I clearly had Enya order pizza too often if the off duty police officers watching over my building knew the name of my pizza delivery driver. Perhaps I needed to adjust my schedule a little more to make sure I had time to accompany Enya to the store more often so we weren't eating pizza so much. As I headed up to my floor, I thought it odd I hadn't run across Jake on his way out.

When I reached my floor, I heard Enya let out a scream. My heart dropped and I sprinted to my apartment. As I burst through the door I found Jake holding Enya off the ground by her throat. The now, not so tiny, tiger patterned kitten, Tora, was hissing and clawing at Jake in an attempt to get him away from Enya. Without a moment to think, I darted forward and hit him over the back of the head with enough force he instantly fell unconscious and dropped to the floor.

I caught Enya in my arms as she fell from his grasp coughing and gasping for breath. "Enya? Are you alright?" I asked worriedly as I held her close.

She coughed once more and struggled to regulate her breathing. "I-I'm o-okay." Her voice came out meek and shaken. "S-something was w-wrong with Jake."

"What do you mean?" I asked her as I set her down atop the kitchen counter so I could get a better look at her. There was a clear handprint in bright red on her neck that was starting to turn a darker shade of red. It was going to be a nasty bruise later. I winced sympathetically.

"H-his eyes were blank and he wasn't himself." She shivered.

Tora scrambled atop the counter and let out a soft mew as he wriggled into Enya's arms. Enya hugged the kitten in her arms. Tears welled in her bright blue eyes and I felt my heart clench in my chest. The poor girl had been through enough, why couldn't she catch a break? My body moved on it's own, wanting to offer her comfort. I placed a hand to the back of her head and pulled her against me.

She let out an adorable squeak as I kissed the top of her head. I didn't know why I did it, it just felt like the right thing to do. When I released her, I noticed an endearing blush spreading across her cheeks. I was about to apologize, when I also noticed a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips and realized I'd successfully made her feel better.

"Why don't you take Tora to your room for a minute, I'll deal with Jake." I didn't want to risk scarring her further in the event Jake came to and was still not himself.

Enya looked worriedly at the unconscious pizza delivery driver, "y-you're not going to hurt him, are you?"

I offered her a smile, "I won't hurt him." Only Enya would be concerned for the well being of someone who'd just attacked her.

She nodded and took Tora to her room.

Once she was safely in her room, I knelt beside the unconscious Jake and gently shook him awake. His hazel eyes fluttered open before he winced and rubbed the back of his head with a groan. He opened his eyes again and looked up at me before his eyes suddenly grew wide in horror.

"Oh my god! Is Enya alright?!" He panicked, "Oh god, did I hurt her? Oh man! I have no idea what happened!" He was talking a mile a minute, his voice rising in volume and octave with each passing second, "please tell me she's oka-."

I felt bad for the boy and could immediately tell that whatever had transpired, had not been his doing. "She's a little shaken up, but I believe she'll be alright." I offered so he'd hopefully calm down. "Tell me what happened."

Jake looked relieved, "I'm glad she's okay..." he took a deep breath before calmly explaining, "it was super busy at the shop when Enya called to order pizza, Manny let me take the call because I love talking to Enya- uhhh not like in a creepy way- she just talks to you like you're a real person and you matter and it's so refreshing from the usual callers-." he explained quickly.

"Did any of you say her name out loud?" I asked warily.

Jake thought for a moment, "yeah, I guess, Manny did, he had to yell a bit since it was so busy and loud in the shop."

I frowned, "did you notice anyone acting strangely?"

"I'm not sure, it was really busy." He strained to think. "Ah, wait. There was one guy, I couldn't get a good look at him because he had a hoodie and his hood was pulled up, it seemed like he'd been waiting for awhile, hanging at the back of the shop, I thought maybe he'd ordered a huge order or something and was just waiting on it, but now that I think about it, I don't remember him leaving with any food..."

"Can you recall any details about him?" I asked.

"Probably a little taller than me, looked like he hit the gym or the buffet a lot, not sure the hoodie was really bulky, coulda been muscle or doughnut admiration, not sure, and the hoodie was just a boring plain dark grey, didn't really stand out a lot. I didn't get a look at his face."

I nodded, "what happened after you talked to Enya?"

Jake blushed, "ah, well I did my 'happy dance' because I got to deliver here and seeing your or Enya always makes my day."

The fanboy was sweet but I was about to lose my patience. I cleared my throat hoping it would keep him from going off on a fanboy tangent.

He got my meaning and continued on with his recounting, "after that, I took a few calls until the food was ready. As I grabbed my delivery bag and headed out the door, that's when the guy left without his food. I had to go out the customer entrance because there was a delivery truck at the back door and when I stepped outside, everything suddenly felt weird, it was like I lost all control of my body. I could see everything I was doing and saying but it was like someone else was driving and I was just in the passenger seat. It felt crazy."

"Did you hear anything or see anything when that happened?" I asked.

"I heard a voice but it sounded like Darth Vader, ya know like it was robotic and through some kind of sound machine, it told me to deliver a message to Enya Todoroki."

"What was the message?" I asked warily, they knew her real name and not the alias she'd been using.

"There is no escape." Jake said with a grimace, "that sounds terrifying, is she okay?!"

I nodded.

"All Might, I've been meaning to ask, do you have a twin because I see two of you?"

I shook my head, "you probably have a concussion...sorry about that."

"A concussion from All Might, that's so cool. Can you autograph it?" Jake asked in a daze.

"...I'm not sure how one autographs a concussion but I'll take you to the hospital." I offered and helped him up off the ground.

He swayed on his feet once he was upright. I sighed and leaned him against the back of the sofa before going to Enya's room. I knocked on the door quietly. The door opened slowly and Enya poked her head out. Tora was perched atop her head and also poked his head out through the crack in the door. I couldn't help but smile at the pair of them.

"I'm going to take Jake to the hospital, I think it would be safest if you came along or waited with Jaclyn." I said quietly.

"You said you weren't going to hurt him." Enya squeaked.

"I didn't." I promised, "well I mean I concussed him when I saw him attacking you, but I did nothing after that."

"Oh." She relaxed. "I think Jaclyn is at work, and I'm worried about Jake, so I'd like to go with you."

"Alright. Stay close."

She nodded before setting Tora down atop her bed. "Tora, we'll be back soon, guard the house, okay?"

The kitten seemed to stand up a little straighter and let out a tiny meow before sitting at attention atop her bed. I chuckled softly.

Enya stepped out of her room and looked over at Jake in concern. In my absence he'd slipped off the back of the couch and was lying face first on the floor. "Jake, are you okay?!" She asked worried as she inched over to his side.

"Peaches." Jake mumbled into the floor before realizing that wasn't quite right, "I mean, peachy."

Enya threw me a worried look. "Is he going to be okay?"

"Don't worry about me, Enya. I got a concussion from All Might, how cool is that?" Jake squealed.

Enya lightly patted him on the shoulder trying her best to be supportive, "the coolest?" She asked unsure.

"Yeah it is." Jake grinned as I lifted him off the ground and placed him over my shoulder.

"I'm sure he'll be fine." I attempted to reassure her.

The three of us made our way, on foot, to the hospital. I texted one of my friends in law enforcement asking him to meet us at the hospital to take Jake's statement about what had happened in hopes we could catch the person responsible. Though I was certain, if we found any leads, it would be another note saying they were acting on their own and a suicide, like everyone else who'd been involved so far.

Enya kept close to me, staying within an arm's reach. The bruising on her neck was now a deep purple and looked to be causing her a great deal of discomfort.

"I'm sorry, Enya." I said softly, it seemed like Jake had fallen asleep, which I thought might be cause for concern but it was also a nice break from his fanboy raving.

"Huh?" Enya looked at me in awe, "for what?"

"I let you down, you got hurt by a monster because of me." I frowned.

Enya offered me a radiant smile, "you didn't let me down and Jake's not a monster, he was hurt by one too. You saved us both." She glanced over at Jake worriedly, "though maybe you could have been a tad gentler with saving Jake."

"I probably could have but, I saw you in trouble and I just acted without thinking." I was honestly surprised I hadn't hurt him more.

Enya slipped her hand in my free hand and gave it a squeeze, "thank you for saving me."
