Chapter Thirteen
~Enya's POV~
On top of planning a wedding in under three months, my mother had been busy running interference and playing 'keep Enya away from Lorenzo' at various obligatory functions we had to attend. At first it had been somewhat mortifying as, she exclaimed quite loudly at the rehearsal dinner that I had horrible diarrhea but after I got used to the initial horror of her weird interference, I was very grateful as the results were amazing. Lorenzo kept his creepiness to a minimum, occasionally stealing a forced kiss or two but it never escalated beyond that, thanks to Mother.
The morning of my wedding day, my father removed the ridiculous GPS tracking ankle bracelet and my parents took me to the venue where I was to be traded off like livestock. It was a beautiful vineyard with a massive ballroom and plenty of space for all the wedding day events. If it were a truly happy occasion, I'd have thought the place was gorgeous. It was beautifully decorated with lights and flowers and looked quite magical, but the heaviness in my heart and the absolute dread and terror I felt kept me from being able to appreciate the beauty of the place. This was it, my last chance to get away. Upon our arrival I was escorted to a suite to get ready for the day. I didn't have a moment to myself the entire morning and before I knew it, I found myself stuffed in a beautiful gown with diamonds embroidered in the boddice, a big poofy skirt and designer heels with my hair styled up and a veil affixed. The later it got the sicker I felt. What if I never got a chance to get away?!
An hour before the wedding, Rei and Enji came to visit me. Rei looked like she was ready to go into labor any day now. She looked nervous as she stepped into my suite. Enji looked remorseful, I know he must have tried somehow to get me out of this but failed. He looked like he was losing sleep and running himself ragged from whatever he had tried, to save me. Part of me couldn't help but feel angry at him for sending me back after I begged him not to. Mother shooed everyone else out, and I saw Mei give me a wink and mouth 'good luck' before she ducked out of my suite. It was going to happen soon.
"You look beautiful." Enji smiled down at me before leaning down to kiss me on the head.
I felt completely numb. I didn't respond.
Rei bit her lip, before turning to Enji with a smile, "can we have a minute for some girl talk?"
"Sure." Enji stepped forward and kissed me on the cheek, "I love you." He smiled before taking his leave.
Once Rei was sure he was gone she reached into her purse and pulled out a handful of cash, it was in US dollars, as if she already knew my destination. She tucked it into my corset so that I could access it easily without drawing too much attention before wrapping me in a hug. "You have to run, Enya. Run and don't look back. It's the only way. There's a car waiting for you just past the gate, take it into town and run. Don't tell a soul where you're going and just go."
I heard a commotion outside and realized my mother must have fainted as I heard Enji call out for her sounding concerned. That was my cue. I gave Rei one last hug. "Thank you, Nee-san. I love you."
"I love you too." She smiled with tears in her eyes, "now run."
I hoisted up the large skirts of my dress and managed to jump through the window. I made a run for the gate and the car waiting to take me to freedom. A man in a suit with slicked back hair ran toward me yelling something in Italian. As he reached out to catch me, I activated my quirk. A large flaming sword appeared in my hand and I reflexively swung at him. There was a hiss and sizzling sound as the sword made contact with his chest, cauterizing the wound instantly as it sliced into him. He let out a yowl of pain and dropped to the ground.
I dismissed the sword and ran like hell for the gate. No one else seemed to have noticed I'd run off. There was a car waiting at the gate, just like Rei said, I was surprised to see one of my own drivers behind the wheel. He offered me a warm smile as I dove into the back seat.
"Let us be on our way, Mistress." He floored it. I didn't dare allow myself to relax.
"Thank you." I choked.
"No thanks, necessary, Mistress." He handed me a small backpack, "Lizette wished me to give this to you."
I opened the backpack and felt tears well in my eyes as I spotted my All Might bear, the cape and my treasured photos from our outing at the amusement park along with some emergency cash in various types of currency. "Please, tell her thank you for me, when you see her." I sniffled as I hugged the backpack to my chest.
"I will." My driver bowed his head as the car slowed to a stop once we reached the city, "stay safe, Enya."
I waved farewell to my driver and bolted from the car. Some people stopped and looked as I ran down the street in a very expensive wedding gown. Without thinking, I headed for the airport. My bear, the cape and the photos all told me exactly where I needed to go...I had to find All Might.
I got quite a lot of funny looks as I made my way up to the ticket kiosk at the airport. The lady behind the counter stared at me in awe, even with all the pretty makeup, I still looked like a teenager. Recognition flooded her gaze and she gaped at me.
"Oh gosh, are you Endeavor's sister?" She asked in awe.
I nodded, "I am, I'm actually flying with him...on hero business, could I get a ticket to California?"
"Absolutely, is he here with you?"
I nodded again and lied swiftly, "he's in the bathroom, he's a bit of a nervous flyer, he told me to go on ahead and he'd meet me at the gate."
"Oh." The lady hesitated, "I really should have him here just since you're a minor."
"It's alright, I get it. He's just a bit grumpy today, but I can go get him-."
"Ah, you know, that's alright." The lady smiled nervously and began typing away on her computer. "Is it being charged to his hero agency? We have all the agencies on file."
I nodded.
"Alright, you're all set." She looked to my wedding dress curiously.
"I do it to mess with the paparazzi and annoy my brother. I wore a pikachu costume last time." I lied with a giggle causing her to laugh.
"That's adorable." The attendant handed me my ticket. "I hope you two have a nice trip."
"Thank you." I accepted the ticket and headed for my gate.
The TSA agents stared at me in awe as I tried to fit my giant poofy skirt through the metal detector scanner. With a little bit of assistance from some laughing security guards, I was able to get through without delay and ran to my gate. Nervously I waited, knowing at any minute I could get picked up by security if anyone caught my lie.
I got lucky and only had to wait about fifteen minutes before my flight started boarding. I still couldn't relax; I was too worried at any moment everything would come crashing down around me and I'd get dragged back to Lorenzo.
Once I was on the plane, I started to feel a sense of peace. Perhaps they wouldn't think to check the airports for a bit in their search for me. I was a minor I couldn't technically fly alone without someone's permission. I hoped the kind lady who'd given me my ticket wouldn't get in trouble because I'd tricked her but tried not to dwell on it for long. It was a matter of life or death; I think she'd forgive me if she knew what was really going on.
As the plane took off, I relaxed and settled in for the long flight to California. It was about a twelve-hour flight. While most of the passengers settled in for a nap, I was too nervous to let my guard down enough to even think about sleeping. The flight attendants served a meal halfway through the flight but I couldn't eat. I was too scared that at any moment the plane was going to get a call and I was going to be apprehended and forced to return.
The plane touched down, in California. I held my breath as we docked and the flight attendant made an announcement, terrified the announcement would be that police were going to storm the plane and drag me away. It was a standard exiting announcement and people were then dismissed form the plane. I allowed myself to breathe again once I made it inside the airport. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary there wasn't any increased security or police lying in wait for me.
Miraculously I managed to lie my way through customs and before I knew it, I was exiting the airport and entering a cab. People stopped to stare at me in my wedding dress. The cab driver looked a little shocked to see me enter his cab in such attire. My English was a tad rusty but I'd gathered he asked if I was waiting for anyone else.
I shook my head and he nodded before asking me where I wanted to go. I struggled to remember the correct words but eventually he got my meaning, and started driving. Twenty minutes later, we came to a stop outside a plaza that had various thrift stores and pawn shops across from a gorgeous park. I fumbled with the cash Rei had given me and handed a handful of it to my driver. He looked at the cash I'd handed him counted it and handed me a few bills back before telling me to have a good day.
I thanked him and stepped out of the cab. First, I had to pawn off this dress and find some less conspicuous clothing. As I crossed the street to the plaza, I noticed two men wearing dark suits and sunglasses. One of them spotted me and glanced at his phone before elbowing his companion. I felt panic bubble up inside of me and took off at a run away from them. If Lorenzo really had mafia ties, did he have people working for him all over the world?!
I turned a corner so they lost sight of me before darting into an alley. My heart was racing. The sound of running footsteps approached and I activated my quirk as the two followed me into the alley. One of them said something along the lines of 'our lucky day'. Two flaming swords appeared in my hands and I noticed the look of confidence on their faces begin to dwindle. I wasn't going to be easy prey.
They muttered something to each other that I couldn't quite hear. I did manage to catch the words 'Boss, Lorenzo, and Bride' and felt my heart drop. They really did work for Lorenzo! One of them held up his phone. I hurled one of the flaming swords at him striking the phone out of his hand before he could try to contact anyone or take a photo of me before casting my hands out. Flames shot from my hands and formed into two large flaming chickens that ran at the two men.
They let out panicked shouts and backed away. I spun around and turned to make a run for it only to come face to face with a giant of a man wearing a matching dark suit. He struck a pressure point on my neck and everything went black.
