Chapter Seventeen

~All Might's POV~

David offered to give Enya's brother a ride to the airport. I'd nearly lost my cool, I'd been so angry at him for lying to me before about the abuse and then seemingly trying to brush it away again. I took a deep breath to calm myself before opening the door to my closet and flipping on the light. The pile of plushies appeared to be trembling.

"Enya?" I called to her softly.

A sniffle came from the pile of plushies that nearly broke my heart.

I knelt on the floor next to the pile of plushies and slowly started sifting through the various plushies to get to her. It took a while before I found her curled into a ball crying quietly amongst the plushies. It felt like someone was gripping my heart tightly in their hand. I couldn't bear to see her like this. She looked up at me with tear filled deep blue eyes. The thought of her in here alone, crying and shaking with fear while I'd been telling off her brother practically broke me, I could have handled that better. At first, I'd had some reservations about being dishonest and misleading because I could see how much he truly cared for her, but the moment he'd mentioned taking her back, I snapped.

"I'm sorry, I could have handled that better." I sighed.

"Do I have to go back?" She asked with a sniffle.

I shook my head, "no, you don't have to do anything you don't want to ever again."

She sat up and wiped away her tears before diving into my arms. "Thank you, Toshinori."

My heart skipped a beat as I caught her in my arms. "No thanks necessary." I gently hugged her back. "How about we finish breakfast now?"

She nodded and got to her feet before quickly putting the plushies back in order. We headed back to the kitchen and I noticed her gaze drift to the little bit of cereal that has spilled across the counter when she'd nearly had a heart attack when her brother attempted to beat down the door. "Sorry."

"It's alright." I swept up the spilled cereal and offered her a smile, "no harm done."

She finally started to relax again and returned my smile with one of her own. After three days of ordering pizza, Enya had caught on to my lack of cooking skills and offered to take care of cooking. My refrigerator was finally happy as it was now filled with real food. I was surprised that a young lady from such a rich family, that was sure to have chefs, knew how to cook, before I remembered her mentioning her parents had sent her off to a school that essentially shaped young ladies into being perfect little housewives...there was A LOT wrong with the Todoroki family. At first, I'd protested as I didn't want her to feel she had to do the cooking and offered to help her with what I could but nearly set the apartment on fire in my attempt to help her. At that point she politely informed me she enjoyed cooking, alone, and would feel better if she had something to do to help me out.

She'd been staying with me for nearly a week. I was still crashing on the sofa and planning to go furniture shopping sometime soon and find something to do with the office and home gym equipment in my spare bedroom so she could have her own bedroom. A law enforcement friend I'd made who worked with witness protection was able to help me sort out documentation and get Enya a new identity to keep her protected and in hopes that she could have a somewhat normal life while hiding from her family.

I looked over at Enya as she moved her cereal around in her bowl with her spoon, not really eating anything. She looked deep in thought. "Are you sure you're alright with this?" I asked softly trying not to startle her, she was still a bit jumpy.

Her body jerked slightly and she looked up at me curiously.

"You're sure you don't want to see your brother?" I asked.

She chewed her bottom lip anxiously revealing her uncertainty. After a moment she nodded before continuing to push her cereal around quietly.

I didn't like seeing her looking so morose. "How about a trip to Disneyland?" I blurted; I'd meant to surprise her with it a little more tactfully than that but now was as good a time as any.

"Huh?" She squeaked adorably.

"I thought we could go to Disneyland, it's much bigger than the last amusement park we were at and they have some pretty amazing firework shows." I explained before holding my breath to see how she'd react.

Her lips pulled into a small smile, "that sounds like fun."

I breathed a sigh of relief as her smile returned, it wasn't as bright as it once had been but it was one of the brightest smiles I'd seen on her face in days, I'd take it. She was still grieving the loss of her friends and now with the stress of her brother being in town and our verbal altercation, I imagined she was feeling pretty upset.

After breakfast, I offered to take care of the dishes so she could get ready. She returned a few minutes later in a pair of shorts and plain shirt with her long crimson hair pulled into a ponytail with a cute powder blue baseball cap atop her head and a pair of large sunglasses so she could hide herself.

"Ready?" I asked her with a smile as I finished the last of the dishes.

She nodded and scampered after me as I headed for the door. Once we stepped outside of the apartment, she put the large sunglasses on. I offered her my arm as I realized they were quite tinted and was worried she'd have trouble seeing indoors and might walk into something. Her cheeks reddened as she placed her hand atop my arm accepting my help.

As we exited the apartment building, I frowned as I spotted a black sedan with dark tinted windows that made it impossible to see inside. The hair on the back of my neck prickled, we were being watched. I adjusted my grip on Enya, shaking my arm from her hold so I could drape it over her delicate shoulders and keep her tucked against me and as out of view as possible. She let out a cute squeak of surprise as I pulled her close before hiding her blushing face by ducking her head down. No one had been tailing her before, I had a sick feeling her brother had unknowingly brought them with him and given her position away.

Worry began to bubble up inside of me, I had no idea who exactly I was dealing with or what all they were capable of. I looked down at Enya hoping she hadn't noticed and was glad to see she was still staring intently down at the ground trying to hide her blushing face, oblivious to our audience. Today was supposed to be a fun day, I didn't want to worry her needlessly. She needed this, a break from all the horror.

We got into a cab and I subtly kept an eye on the black sedan and was simultaneously relieved and worried when it didn't follow us. If it were someone looking for Enya, perhaps they were just trying to lie in wait or set up some kind of trap. I had no idea who these people were or what their quirks were or what sort of trouble they presented. My number one priority was to keep Enya safe, but today it was to make her smile to try and give her a moment of peace.

"Toshinori?" Enya lightly tugged on my arm that I hadn't realized I still had draped across her delicate shoulders in the cab.

"Ah, sorry." I pulled my arm away and noticed her concealed deep blue eyes were still fixed on me, "what is it?"

"Is everything alright?" She asked worried.

I didn't want to lie to her, I didn't like lying and I'd done enough of that earlier, lying to her brother, for her sake. "I'm not sure, but it's not something I want you to worry about, we can talk about it later, today's goal is to have fun." I smiled.

She looked a little uneasy but returned my smile after a brief pause. Her eyes were concealed behind her sunglasses but I imagined for that brief pause they'd been filled with terror and I mentally kicked myself, perhaps it would have been better to lie. After another moment she spoke up softly, "thanks for being honest with me."

I immediately felt guilty for even daring to think of lying to her. "I always will be." I vowed.

She smiled.

"Have you thought about what you'd like to do, once things have settled down a bit?" I asked her curiously, our cab driver was lost in his own little world listening to headphones.

"Do you want me to leave?" She asked softly.

"What?! No...well not unless you want to...I just wanted to know what you wanted to do with your life, what plans you had?" I asked.

She looked thoughtful and I realized she'd probably never been given much chance to think about it. She'd been brought up in a household where her parents and possibly even her brother told her exactly what she was going to be doing with her life. "...I want to save people...like you and Nii-sama..."

"A hero?" I smiled, she had such a kind and compassionate heart, "I think you'd make a fine hero."

A single tear slipped down her cheek.

"Ah, what did I say?" I panicked.

Enya shook her head and smiled, "sorry, I'm not upset, I'm happy...I talked to Nii-sama about it once, but he said I wasn't allowed, it was too dangerous." Her smile started to falter as she thought back on that day.

I felt even less bad about how I'd treated him earlier at this, "it certainly is dangerous, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be worried about you, but if that's what you wish to do, I'll support you."

She threw her arms around me and I felt my heart start to race in my chest. "Thank you." She cried.

"Anytime." I smiled once I recovered from the sudden increase in heartrate.

Her smile was almost as bright as it once had been. "Where do I start?"

"I suggest learning how to swim as a good starting point." I pointed as I thought of the occasions, I'd had to save her from drowning.

Her cheeks reddened and she nodded.

Twenty minutes later, Enya was staring out the window in awe as we approached the park. Her bright deep blue eyes were filled with wonder and excitement as she took in all the new sights. Screams and laughter echoed in the distance from the various attractions. As we exited the cab, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from David.

D: I dropped the hot head off at the airport.

I looked over at Enya as she was surrounded by giant plush Disney mascots who all seemed to think she needed a hug. She probably was very much in need of a hug. I could see her radiant smile beginning to return after each hug. Once she'd hugged all the characters, she thanked them with an adorable giggle and a graceful curtsy that they all amusingly tried to mimic. The circle of curtsying plush characters attracted a plethora of children which became even more amusing as they all begged Enya to teach them how to curtsy too. We hadn't even made it into the park and she looked to be having so much fun.

After the children felt they'd learned a proper curtsy, Enya slipped away. I could feel her deep blue eyes on me as she returned to my side. "Toshinori?"

"My friend dropped your brother off at the airport... are you sure you don't want to see him, if you're worried about him taking you away, I promise that won't happen..."

She shook her head, "...I don't want to see him..." Her voice shook, breaking with uncertainty.

"Alright." I decided to drop the subject as it was upsetting her. I offered her my arm with a smile, "where to first?"

Her cheeks reddened as she took my arm. "Don't we need to get tickets first?" She asked.

I fished into my pockets and retrieved the tickets I'd gotten in advance while I'd been out doing some justicing earlier in the week. "Already taken care of." I chuckled before heading toward the entrance.

Once in the park, we headed down main street where there was a plethora of shops, eateries and theaters. Enya seemed in awe of everything, looking around at all the new things with a bright smile. She seemed content with walking around to see all there was to see. I felt a smile tug at my lips as I noticed she was starting to relax as she looked at all the magical rides, buildings and characters.

As we were walking, I noticed her gait begin to slow and paused to see what had caught her attention. She was looking at a teacup ride in mystified wonder. I chuckled and steered her toward the line for the ride. She seemed mildly embarrassed at having been caught staring at the ride but didn't protest.

We got a lavender teacup to ourselves. The cast member who assisted us assured me it was the fastest teacup and for a moment I felt a fleeting sense of concern, until the ride started. There was a moment on the ride where I saw something shift in Enya, as if she'd finally been able to let go of all the anxiousness and worry, she'd been wrapped in for so long. All her anxieties seemed to melt away and she smiled and giggled freely, just as brightly as she used to. It was at that moment where I finally felt like I'd done the right thing taking her in, I'd been worried it had been wrong or would end up being detrimental to her in some way. Seeing her now, finally happy, I knew I'd made the right choice.

After the ride, Enya had a slight bounce to her step and seemed more eager to explore the park and less hesitant and reserved as she had been. She was comfortable enough to point out other rides that she wanted to go on and before I knew it, we'd ridden a plethora of rides, some multiple times and I found myself having just as much fun.
