Chapter Nine
~Enji's POV~
As the fireworks show came to a close and the rest of the crowd began to head for the exit, I glanced over to see Enya fighting to keep her eyes open. I knew she was exhausted and just trying to hide it. Sighing, I shooed the ridiculous blonde idiot away from her and swung her into my arms. She hugged her stupid bear in her arms and her head dropped onto my shoulder as she drifted to sleep. She must have been more exhausted than I'd thought.
"I knew you were tired." I grumbled under my breath as I gently cradled her in my arms.
All Might offered Rei a smile, "thank you for inviting me-." He paused as he realized he didn't know her name.
"Rei." She replied with a polite smile.
"Thank you. It was nice meeting you, Rei." He offered her a cordial handshake before turning to me.
"Save it." I glowered not wanting to hear what other train wreck of a name he'd come up with in his attempt to remember my hero name which for some reason he was incapable of remembering! I turned on my heel and headed toward the exit. He probably did it intentionally just to spite me.
"It was nice meeting you, All Might, thanks for helping make Enya's day." Rei bid the blonde menace farewell before following me to the exit.
She paused at one of the photo kiosks as we neared the exit. I waited for her impatiently. She was only gone for a moment and returned stuffing a bag into her purse before offering me a smile.
"What was in that?" I asked suspiciously.
"I thought Enya might like some copies of the pictures we had taken today." Rei smiled.
I felt something stir within me. Enya would enjoy that, she'd had a lot of fun today, which is all I'd wanted. "...thanks..." I murmured uncomfortably still not knowing how to act around my forced fiancé.
"I didn't do it for you, but you're welcome." She adjusted the bear in Enya's grip, careful not to wake her as she'd noticed it had started to slip.
We got to the awaiting car and Enya stirred awake. She looked around in confusion for a moment before insisting she wasn't tired and was awake enough to get in the car herself. Rei laughed and slid into the car, Enya hopped in after her and gave her a small side hug.
"Thanks for today, Nee-san." Enya smiled while fighting off another yawn.
"You're welcome." Rei hugged her back.
I felt a small smile tug at the corners of my lips. Perhaps Rei wasn't awful, she really seemed to care for Enya and they got along well. I could tolerate having her as a wife if she made Enya happy. I got in the car and shut the door after me before buckling Enya's seatbelt as she already started to drift back to sleep.
We'd been out much later than I had intended, but I just couldn't bring myself to put the day to an end, even when I saw Enya getting tired. I'd never seen her look as happy as she had today and I wanted to make sure it lasted as long as possible. Her feet were sure to be sore tomorrow but she'd probably still be happy about it.
After about ten minutes into our trip home, I realized Enya wasn't using me as a pillow as I'd expected her to. I glanced over at her and smiled as I saw them both sleeping soundly. Rei had her arms wrapped around Enya who was squeezing her stupid bear. As much as the bear annoyed me, I couldn't help but smile at the scene before me. Moments like this could never happen with our parents anywhere nearby. Enya could never be this relaxed and at peace at home.
I grabbed a blanket from one of the side seats the driver had waiting. I hadn't realized how attentive the drivers were, perhaps it was just for Enya because she cared enough to talk to them and get to know them. I swept the blanket around them and sat back in my seat to watch over them.
The annoying blonde's face drifted across my mind's eye and I scowled at the floor of the car. I thought back to our earlier conversation and felt my anger begin to build. He'd noticed Enya's bruises and asked me about them, I hated myself for lying, and telling him the excuse my parents and the corrupt doctor would give, that she was clumsy. It would only cause her more grief if people knew the truth. I didn't think he believed me but he didn't press the issue further, he'd said he was going to be going back to America soon and he wanted to make sure she was alright since he'd promised to save her if she was in trouble. It annoyed me that he thought she needed his saving when she had me. I was happy he'd be gone but I knew it would upset Enya. As much as I was looking forward to him being gone, I wasn't looking forward to how heartbroken Enya would be. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be gone. He said it could be a few years. That made me happy. Hopefully he would be gone, forever and Enya could forget all about him in a few months' time.
The car came to a stop outside of Rei's estate. I reached over and shook her awake. She awoke with a start seeming surprised that she'd fallen asleep. A yawn escaped her. She dug through her purse and pulled out several photos from our day's adventure and set them aside for Enya before tucking the blanket around her as she slept.
"Thanks for today, I had a good time." She smiled as she stepped out the door.
I frowned slightly; I could just imagine Enya yelling at me for being a bad date by not walking her to the door. I followed her out of the car and begrudgingly offered her my arm. She seemed surprised by my actions. A faint splash of color spread across her pale cheeks and she placed her arm in mine and let me escort her to the door. "It wasn't bad...we could do it again sometime, if you like." I said somewhat awkwardly.
"I think Enya would like that." Rei smiled fondly gripping the white plush cat I'd won for her at Enya's behest.
I nodded, "...thank you..." I couldn't put it into words how much it meant to me that she'd taken Enya under her wing and treated her so kindly.
"Goodnight, Enji." She stood on tiptoe and kissed me on the cheek before hurriedly ducking inside.
I looked to the closed door curiously for a moment, thrown off by her actions before returning to the car. Enya was still sound asleep though now looked horribly uncomfortable, tangled up in her seat belt with no one to lean on. Sighing I unbuckled her seat belt and pulled her onto my lap. She squeezed her bear tightly in her arms before snuggling into my arms in her sleep. There was a dreamy smile splayed across her lips.
"I'm glad you had fun today." I kissed the top of her head.
It was a bittersweet moment. It had been a fun day, but I knew it wouldn't last for long. Mother and Father told me Rei and I would be getting married almost immediately after I graduated from UA. I'd be moving out sooner than expected. It was going to be harder for me to steal Enya away like this.
The car came to a stop outside of our estate, I scooped up the pictures Rei had left for Enya and carried Enya out of the car. She started to stir as I carried her toward the house. Her deep blue eyes fluttered open though it appeared to be a great struggle for her to keep them open.
She smiled up at me sleepily and threw her arms around me clumsily, still not entirely awake, "thank you, Nii-sama." She squeezed me tight, "you're the best."
"You deserve the best." I smiled as I carried her inside.
She drifted back to sleep and I chuckled softly.
I looked to the butler who'd opened the door for us, "where are our parents?"
"The master of the house is away on business; the lady has retired for the evening." He bowed respectfully.
That was a relief. I turned to walk away before remembering Enya would have scolded me for not thanking him so I turned back and offered him a gruff, "thanks."
I carried Enya up to her room and laid her atop her bed before gently shaking her awake, "hey, you need to change into these." I indicated the pajamas laid out for her by her maid.
She woke up enough to change and I exited the room to give her privacy. When I returned, she was in her pajamas and half slumped across the foot of her bed, slowly spilling onto the floor. I frowned as I noticed her feet were a little bloodied and blistered.
I sighed, "you should have said something, I could have carried you more." I went to get a first aid kit from her bathroom and tended to her feet before getting her into bed properly and tucking her in.
I made sure the bear was tucked in her arms before sweeping the stupid cape she'd been clinging to like a security blanket over top of her. Her lips pulled into a dreamy smile in her sleep as she snuggled her All Might bear and his cape. Of all the people in the world for her to become so attached to, why did it have to be someone so annoying?!
I freed her crimson hair from the ponytail so it wouldn't disturb her as she slept and leaned forward to kiss the top of her head, "I love you."
I set the pictures Rei had left for her atop her nightstand before taking my leave.
